More than any other skill, your attitude determines how successful you are in a survival situation.

Without a desire to survive, acquired skills serve little purpose and valuable knowledge goes to waste.

Once you realize you are in trouble, sit down, try to stay calm and collect your thoughts.

The “Rule of Threes” provides a guideline of how to prioritize basic survival skills: first shelter, then water, and lastly food.

Rule of Threes

Many people who are forced into survival situations often get into serious trouble because of direct exposure to the elements.

It is extremely important to prevent or minimize heat loss.

Shelter

Use ground that is dry and well drained. Choose a place where it can easily be seen. How will you heat it? Body heat, Fire… Insulation from ground, wind, rain

Here are some things to think about when planning to build a shelter:

Find a straight and sturdy branch to act as your ridgepole. This branch should be a few feet taller than you.

This is the spine of your hut, so make sure it's braced firmly.

Debris Hut

Use straight sticks leaned against your ridgepole every few inches as ribs. Line them all the way down, leaving only a small opening on the high end to act as a doorway.

Pile all manner of fine brush and twigs over the ribs of your structure.

Gather as much debris as you can from the ground and pile it over the twigs on your structure.
