Remedial Programs Available in the School Students who have been iden fi ed as having special needs through the IPRC process (Individual Placement and Review Commi ee) will take courses that have been modifi ed to suit their specifi c, individual needs. These recommenda ons are outlined in the minutes of the IPRC mee ngs and in their I.E.P. (Individual Educa on Plan). Resource teachers and educa onal assistants provide programs and assistance for iden fi ed students. Our resource staff works hard to meet the needs of students, from gi ed through challenged, by means of enrichment, withdrawal and special programming. Destinations Program

In September 2010, South Huron District High School ini ated a Des na ons Program at the school. The purpose of this program is to provide educa onal opportuni es for students who are cer fi cate bound. Students will be admi ed into this program by the Principal. Programming will be determined by the facili es and staff within the school. The purpose of the program is to prepare students for the transi on into the world of work when they leave South Huron. Emphasis in grade 11 and grade 12 will be placed on the coopera ve educa on program with a focus on employability skills. South Huron hopes to have a complete des na ons program in place at the school for grades 9 through 12 no later than 2012.

COPE

The COPE program is an alterna ve educa on program for students between 16 and 21 who have struggled to be successful in the regular school program. COPE off ers students the opportunity to earn credits in two ways: through “correspondence style” courses for a range of academic credits, and through the comple on of Co-op credits. Students will a end school and will work on the correspondence style courses with the assistance of a classroom teacher. COPE students will generally work on one or two academic credits at a me. In most cases, COPE students will have earned most of their credits and will use the program to complete their diploma or cer fi cate needs. All candidates for COPE must be interviewed by the principal and will only be admi ed to the program on his/her recommenda on.

English as a Second Language

The Avon Maitland District School Board recognizes that secondary ESL students face unique challenges as they pursue their secondary diploma and make the transi on to full fl uency in English. Students in the early stages of English acquisi on may monitor courses or work for par al credits if they are not able to meet the curriculum expecta ons for a course. Adapted programming helps students achieve credits in courses even if their communica on skills are not suffi ciently developed to demonstrate their learning. ESL students may also be provided with tutoring to enable them to expand their language skills more rapidly. While students may need more than 4 years to complete their diploma, Avon Maitland DSB students who take ESL are given the assistance they need to fulfi ll their long-term goals.

Course Changes Students wishing to change a course should consult with their Guidance counsellor. Course changes can occur at diff erent mes in the year for a variety of reasons. The normal prac ce is to cease making course changes two weeks into a semester. Parental approval is required for changes if students are less than 18 years old. Course changes are not always possible a er the start of the school year, and should be made as early as possible to facilitate success.
