No cash value

Late last year, we kicked off a fun contest to win “cash” (Shawbucks) to spend in downtown Shawnee. We know the Nieman Now! construction is putting some businesses in a bind, so “Shawbucks” was created to get more customers downtown to support our local businesses. To date we have had over 650 entries and 32 winners from 10 different businesses! Drawings have been held every two weeks with four winners of $25 in Shawbucks for a grand total of $1,300 awarded to be spent in our downtown by the end of the program. Winners can spend the Shawbucks at any of the participating businesses through the end of 2019. If Shawbucks are redeemed at your business, simply bring them to City Hall for reimbursement. The Shawbucks program will be wrapping up after the Downtown Open House with the last drawing on May 10. We want to thank everyone who participated in program, and helped draw attention to our great downtown!

We want to continue to help support your businesses throughout the Nieman Now progress. Please contact Lauren Grashoff, Neighborhood Planner, at 742-6226 or Dave Holtwick, Business Liaison, at 742-6214 with your concerns or ideas about how we can help.

What about our private developments? Planning for long-term sustainability and environmental sensitivity in new development is also a focus for Shawnee. The City has enacted new zoning rules that require a higher amount of open space and trees for all new developments. These efforts help to reduce paved areas that cause pockets of increased air temperature and enhance air quality. Our regulations for new subdivisions also act to protect existing trees and open spaces whenever possible to accomplish these same goals. Additionally, the City has adopted standards to minimize the size of commercial parking lots. This effort has a double impact as it decreases stormwater runoff and preserves open space throughout the city. Appropriately managing stormwater enhances the quality of our lakes and streams. But that’s not all! Recent updates to the City’s comprehensive plan and zoning regulations have increased the number of residences per acre, also known as density, to allow portions of our City to develop in the most efficient way possible! For more information on Sustainable Shawnee and city-supported programs for your home or business visit www.cityofshawnee.org.

Planning and Development for Shawnee's Future

A primary goal of the City is to support and promote a more sustainable and environmentally friendly community. Over the course of 2019, you’ll notice a lot of changes around the City to implement this initiative! LED Streetlight UpgradeEvery City-owned streetlight will be upgraded to LED. These new LED streetlights reduce maintenance cost and consume half the energy!

Solar Panels for Fire Station 72As a pilot project, the City is installing solar panels at Fire Station 72 near Johnson Drive and Renner Road. This will offset more than half of the station’s electricity usage.

The City anticipates that, with the planned projects listed above, along with 10+ other energy efficiency projects like facility mechanical system upgrades and replacing our water fixtures to low flow, we will save almost $500,000 in utility, operational and maintenance costs.

Shawnee Civic Centre 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

All four of the Nieman Now! stormwater projects and Flint Street improvements have been completed to date. The final project, Nieman Road improvements, are currently underway. Several utility relocations have to take place before the Nieman Road street construction can begin. AT&T Fiber and gas utility relocations have been completed. Remaining utility work includes the installation of underground electrical lines, and relocation of Google Fiber and coax, Spectrum Fiber and coax, and water lines. The majority of the utility relocation work should be completed in April. Following the utility work, storm sewer construction and street reconstruction, including curbs, sidewalks and pavement will also begin. Site preparation has begun on the new Trail Scout Park on Shawnee Mission Parkway frontage road between Commerce Bank and Stag’s Creek. Construction of the Nieman Road east and west plazas will be completed in the fall. We want thank everyone for their patience throughout the construction. Updates on traffic changes and a detailed Nieman Road construction schedule are available online at www.cityofshawnee.org/NiemanNow. Downtown Incentive Programs The City of Shawnee offers a range of incentive programs for new and existing businesses in downtown Shawnee. The City wants to encourage businesses to invest in their buildings by making improvements, as well as attract new customers and businesses to the area. A thriving business community contributes to the enhanced viability of the area, and to the entire community. On February 25, 2019, the City Council approved revisions to Shawnee’s Policy Statement 65, Shawnee Entrepreneurial and Economic Development (SEED

Program). The SEED program has been very useful in retaining and encouraging current employers in Shawnee to expand their business in Shawnee. It has also been useful in attracting new employers that have led to millions of dollars of investment and the creation of hundreds of jobs in the community. The changes specific to downtown Shawnee, include redirecting the lease assistance program for just Nieman and Downtown Shawnee, which now allows restaurant and retail to be included. The Lease Assistance program is capped at $40,000.

Additionally, for those of you considering making exterior building improvements this year. Two $5,000 improvement grant are still available for property owners that make at least $10,000 in exterior improvements. An unlimited number of $2,000 grants are available for exterior improvements, and $2,500 grants for permanent tenant finish improvements totaling at least $5,000 are also be available. If you are interested in learning more about the City’s incentive programs, visit the Downtown Partnership’s page on the City’s website.
