Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with thanksgiv-ing. (Colossians 4:2)
We begin our Lenten journey with our Ash Wednesday service on March 5 at 7:00 p.m. As Advent is a time of waiting and preparation for the birth of Jesus, Lent is also a time of waiting, not just for the pain of Good Friday, but the joy of celebrating God conquering death through Jesus’ resurrection on Easter morning. Lent is also a time of preparing our heart, mind and soul to make that spiritual journey all the way through Holy Week. Personally, I find the season of Lent to be the most spiritual time of the year. It isn’t a time for big productions, singing Glo-ria’s and proclaiming God’s “majesty” in some grand manner. It is a journey of the heart where we are first called to find time for solitude, self-evaluation and contemplation. It is a time for us to really think and to ask ourselves, “Why was it necessary for Jesus to give His life for me, and our world?” In the garden of Gethsemane Jesus makes it clear in his prayer that if there was an-other method to reconcile our relationship with God without being crucified on a cross… Jesus was open to it. All he received was silence.
Sometimes the most difficult journey we can make is the journey inward; a journey where we honestly evaluate our words, actions, motives, goals, and priorities. Do they match up with the calling of a disciple, or are they just our own goals, chosen to fulfill our dreams and desires? It is a difficult journey that requires courage, honesty and faith. Sometimes we need a trusted friend, spouse or partner who will look at the mirror with us, and never leave us as we cele-brate the gifts we have been given, and evaluate
those things that really need to change, discard or require forgiveness. If we can’t find someone to look into the mirror with us, I can assure you that you are not alone. Jesus promised to ‘be with us always, until the end of the age.’ If you are reading this article, clearly the “end of the age” has not arrived, and Jesus IS with you right now, next to you, inside you, leading and when necessary, carrying you.
Mark it on your calendars and be sure to be at our Ash Wednesday worship service. Let me mark your forehead with the Cross of Christ, and just before you wash your face before you sleep, look at that cross in the mirror and know that you will not be alone on your Lenten Journey even through the cleansing of Good Friday, and the New Life revealed on Easter Morning.
See you in Church, Pastor Tim

NOTES FROM TOM
Have you ever had flashbacks about people long
forgotten? I had one the other day. It was of a girl
from my high school. She was quiet, plainly
dressed, and a good athlete. She starred on the
basketball team.
I remember my high school journalism teacher
telling me that this student was having a difficult
time. Her parents objected not to her playing bas-
ketball, but to her basketball uniform. According
to their religious beliefs and practices, it was un-
seemly for a woman to wear shorts.
Not many people knew about the parents’ con-
cern. The coaches and administration worked out
a way to satisfy the parents, and the girl was able
to continue on the team. Her shorts were a bit
longer than normal, and her jersey was very mod-
est.
I have been thinking of Lent. Lent, as you know,
is the period of forty days before Easter. It is the
time when traditionally we followers of Christ
mark ourselves as being Christ’s and not of the
world. Some will fast, devote themselves to pen-
ance and religious exercises, abstain from cer-
tain foods or activities, or even take upon them-
selves specific projects to express their devotion
to God. Other followers do less, or even ignore
Lent altogether.
I think the reason I had the memory of the high
school incident is because the girl’s parents, and
even the girl herself, were asking the same ques-
tion in their concern over the uniform that the
season of Lent asks of us: What does it mean to
be a follower of Christ?
As we all ponder the question of discipleship this
Lenten season I would like to make a suggestion.
Rather than focus on what one can or cannot do
this season, why not focus on what God has done
for us? (Note that the emphasis is moved from my
Page 3
sacrificing to God’s sacrifice.)
I like how the United Church of Christ pastor,
James Germenian, wrote it in 1993.
Throughout these Lenten days and nights we turn
to walk the inward way,
Where, meeting Christ, our guide and light, we
live in hope till Easter Day.
The pilgrim Christ, the Lamb of God, who found
in weakness greater power,
Embraces us, though lost and flawed, and leads us
to his rising Hour.
We bear the silence, cross and pain of human bur-
dens, human strife,
While sisters, brothers help sustain our courage
till the Feast of Life.
And though the road is hard and steep, the Spirit
ever calls us on
Through Calvary’s dying, dark and deep, until we
see the coming Dawn.
So let us chose the path of One who wore, for us,
the crown of thorn,
And slept in death that we might wake to life on
Resurrection Morn!
Keep singing for all we do is our response to what
God has done for us! See you in worship—

Pastor Qiu Lin Plans to Expand Bethel Seminar Training in China
Pastor Qiu May Visit Calvary This Spring!
Although Pastor Qiu is heavily involved in strategic planning, and financial analysis of funding needs, he hopes
to stop in Honolulu this Spring, and may be able to come to Calvary in April or May. He has exciting news to tell us,
about the success of his Training local pastors in China for teaching Bethel Seminar Sessions, and about the need for
major expansion of this training program.
Training Bethel Seminar Leaders
Leaders of the unofficial “family churches” in China often have difficulty finding access to formal training in Bi-
ble interpretation or formal theology. Pastor Qiu had translated the Bethel Seminar Training material into Chinese,
and has been going to China twice yearly since 2007 to offer personal intensive week-long training courses to any
church leaders willing to attend. He has now given 11 free courses in ten regions in central China, to about 400 pas-
tors, who have started Bethel studies in about 40 congregations, to about 1,200 people so far.
These have proved to be of immeasurable value to pastors and church leaders, helping them under-stand the logic
and theology of salvation offered by Jesus, but also for combating the heresies sorely misleading many Chinese
leaders and their churches. His trips to China have not been without some risk to Pastor Qiu, for his own safety.
Local authorities have detained him for interrogation, and he has been banned from some areas.
Need for Expansion
On his last trip, Pastor Qiu was presented with a different challenge. As news about his training spread, he has
received more requests than he can fulfill. Therefore he is planning a major expansion. He wants to find a few local
trustworthy and capable volunteers, who have the potential to learn to be competent dedicated Seminar trainers. To
support these co-workers, he would organize a team in China to train and back-up these co-workers, to print the
teaching material in China, as well as to set up and to coordinate the training Seminars.
These ambitious plans will need much careful planning, adequate funding, and will take at least two years before
the first co-workers can be ready to start offering classes.
This is urgent. China is undergoing rapid westernization with increasing materialistic influences on the people. It
will be harder and harder (as in the US and Hong Kong) to recruit and train instructors for these intensive and de-
manding two-year courses. The window of opportunity God is providing is perhaps ten-years, which must be seized
now. “The fields are white unto harvest.”
Pastor Qiu says: “Give thanks to God for this thrilling story of the gospel at work, and include me and the Bethel
Series in your intercessions, with prayers also for the funds needed to expand this work.”

Christian
Education is expanding its adult offerings between Sunday
worship services.
Table Talk with Pastor Tim
will be 9 to 9:40 in the Groom's Room (across
from the arbor lanai kitchen) on the 2nd, 3rd, &
4th Sundays. Discussion will be on the
keys points in the sermon and other issues.
Adult Forum
will continue on the first Sunday each month in
Hale Aloha from 8:45 to 9:45.
On March 2 the speaker is Pam Yuen from Alo-
ha Chapter, Alzheimer’s Foundation. She will
explain the early signs of Alzheimer's disease
and the differences between it and normal ag-
ing. A second key point will be on safety and
help for the caregiver and patient.
Is your partner, loved one, or parent showing
early signs of Alzheimer’s disease? Do you
know the difference between normal aging for-
getfulness and Alzheimer’s? Are you the care-
giver for someone with Alzheimer’s? How long
can you safely take care of someone with this
health problems before you, the caregiver, have
healthy issues?
After you have read these questions, those of
you with your own computer may want to try the
5 free memory tests for Alzheimer’s disease and
dementia. Understand first that Alzheimer’s is a
progressive degenerative disease of the brain
leading to dementia. It involves degeneration of
the cognitive part of the brain. These self as-
sessment tests are for dementia. Please consult
your own physician if results seem suspicious.
Thank you so much for allowing us to come
out to your church. The women were truly
blessed.
I would also like to thank you so much for the
Donation to the program that you sent to the
facility. We truly appreciate this very much.
We are moving are program to another level
with class to help the women with life skills.
So this donation will help and I will steward it
will. Thank you again and GOD bless you and
your church for your support.
Blessings,
