To our Partners in Hunger Relief:

This has been an exciting year for Shared Harvest with a lot of new programs to address the quality of food. The Kroger Retail Pickup program has certainly filled the ticket to bring beef, pork, poultry and vegetables directly to the plates of ones in need. With a new refrigerated truck donated by Kraft, we rescued 39,609 pounds from area Kroger stores, frozen to retain its freshness, all of which was distributed to the community. As we continued to seek out quality food, we also improved the quality of service. With a grant from the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, we started to create a case management database. This program will allow us to improve cohesiveness of services to persons in need. Whether the immediate need is food from a pantry affiliate, assistance for heating bills or just help filling out the myriad of forms required by the state for receiving food stamps, we are hoping to share information at each point of service. On the federal and state levels, we made some major strides along with one minor setback. As we expanded our distribution of USDA product from 29 to 38 counties, our Commodity Food Supplemental Program for senior citizens was slightly reduced. I know this was a trying time for Tina and her staff as they adapted to the changing landscape. At the same time, we increased our distribution of fresh fruits and vegetables from 447,000 pounds in 2005 to more than 1.1 million pounds in 2006. As we look forward to 2007, I would like to thank all of our business partners, donors and volunteers who make Shared Harvest a valued mainstay of the community.

Dear Friends and Supporters:

The year 2006 was one of change for Shared Harvest. We realigned our USDA distributions, adding one more foodbank partner and nine more counties to our region. With a grant to buy a new truck, we were able to increase our Kroger Retail Pick Up program from four stores to twelve – and plan to add twelve more in 2007. It was a banner year for the Letter Carriers Food Drive, raising more than 70,000 pounds of food in a single day. We raised money for two new programs to address nutritional needs of children and to centralize registration and referrals for families who go to our partner food pantries.

Our main focus continues to be food distribution. Providing food to people who would go without otherwise is becoming more about quality than quantity. After all, isn’t a pound of fresh fruit and vegetables a better way to fill an empty plate than a pound of cookies? Isn’t a pound of meat better food than a pound of snacks?

Not that cookies or snacks aren’t important. Our new Back Pack Program shows that in addition to nutritious foods, hungry children crave to be normal as much as to be fed. For a hungry child, use to deprivation, a pack of cookies or a bag of chips makes them feel just like all the other kids on the playground because they get to eat the foods that most kids take for granted.

What about addressing the needs that bring families to our partner food pantries in the first place? Our Food Stamp Outreach and Virtual Case Manager are all about helping families become more self reliant and less dependant on charitable food distribution to make ends meet. Those ends are getting farther and farther apart for many working families.

“I’m a high school graduate, have an Associates Degree in Applied Medical Science and am currently employed at Outreach for Community. I am president of the PTA, a Sunday School teacher, the Charter Chair Person for our local Cub Scout pack, Band Booster for the school, assist with cheerleading competitions and a food stamp recipient. I am very proud of my son, he’s on the honor roll at school and I want him to have a normal a life. There are times when my son wants a friend to spend the night – unfortunately I have to make an excuse – because I don’t have enough food to feed them both. I am very good at keeping things hidden from my son and even those outside our front door,” says Rhonda, one of our Food Stamp Outreach clients. This very instant, you may know someone just like Rhonda who is very adept at hiding the reality of empty plates. That is one thing that hasn’t changed.

With all the changes and challenges we’ve faced, we continue, day in and day out, to rescue food and get it it to people who need it through our many amazing donors and partner food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters. And we could not do what we do without you, giving your time, talent and treasure – your hands and hearts fill thousands of empty plates every day.

Our foodbanking services Foodbanking allows us to offer a variety of products to our network of food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and similar non-profi ts. In 2006, Shared Harvest distributed 8,073,158 pounds of food from a variety of sources:

The Kroger Retail Pick-up Program rescues perishable or prepared foods that consumers did not purchase by the expiration date. Kroger has stringent guidelines to ensure these perishable foods are safe to consume. The products are frozen and picked up each day by Shared Harvest. In 2006, eight stores were added to this program, bringing the total participating stores to 12.

The Emergency Food Assistance Program: Shared Harvest contracts with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services to distribute USDA commodities to 39 counties in Ohio, with

the help of fi ve sister foodbanks. Canned fruits, juices, vegetables, proteins and carbohydrates are examples of the nutritious selection of USDA foods offered each month to our partner agencies.

America’s Second Harvest: Shared Harvest is a member of this national network of foodbanks. It offers donated foods that are wholesome but not marketable from national, regional and local companies. These are distributed to our partner charities in Butler, Warren, Preble, Darke and Miami Counties.

The Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks: As a member, Shared Harvest participates in the Ohio Food Purchase program, allowing us to buy food which is not normally contributed at great discounts. The Ohio Agriculture Clearance program fi nds surplus fruit and vegetables from Ohio farmers and pays their harvesting and processing costs for donating the produce.

“Shared Harvest is able to connect farmers with the community,” said Erin Sherwood-Wright, who coordinates the agriculture program for the Ohio Association. “Farmers like the fact that they’re helping people who need fresh

produce but can’t afford to buy it at the store.”

Local food donations: The National Association of Letter Carriers provide the largest one-day food drive in the nation on the second Saturday of May. The 2006 “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive produced a record 70,053 pounds of food in Butler County. Bethany United Methodist Church

in Liberty Township collected 7,810 pounds in a two-week effort. The annual Holiday Aid campaign between Thanksgiving and Christmas brought in 30,120 pounds of food with 34 organizations participating.

Providing food for seniorsCommodity Supplemental Food Program: Since the summer of 2003, Shared Harvest Foodbank has helped qualifying senior citizens to receive additional supplies of food each month.

CSFP, the federally funded nutrition program, provides a 35-pound box of food each month to seniors over 60 years of age whose income is at or below 130% of the poverty level. There is no cost to consumers involved in the program.

“It gives you a lot more food each month, so it’s a big help money- wise,” said CSFP client Barb Petredis. “If I didn’t have it, I’d have to do without, because it’s hard to live off of Social Security.”

Like many seniors, William Conyers looks forward to receiving the two pound block of cheese that is part of his monthly package, because he can use it to prepare several meals. “It helps out a lot, because you also get a variety of canned goods and dried food products,” Conyers said.

Currently, Shared Harvest serves seniors in Butler and Warren Counties with the program set to expand into Preble County in 2007. Jean Barcus, CSFP Coordinator for the Offi ce of Family Stability at Ohio Job and Family Service, said the foodbank is a vital partner in CSFP.

“Giving food to seniors means so much more than the box of food they receive,” Barcus said. “The care, comfort and personal contact from Shared Harvest is the benchmark by which we should all measure our success.”

While the food winds up in the hands of seniors, Butler County’s Juvenile Work Program provides much of the help in preparing the boxes. Program Coordinator Barry Sullivan said the teens are performing community service hours for juvenile offenses, and many of them relate to the work they are performing.

“We’ve had several kids who’ve come in direct contact with these boxes they’re packing, because they have a grandparent or other family member who is in CSFP,” Sullivan said. “They understand the signifi cance of what they’re doing, and working at Shared Harvest gives them a sense of accomplishment.”

Mobile Pantry delivers

Food Stamp project reaches out

Shared Harvest Foodbank’s Mobile Pantry has had a positive impact on needy families in the Lakota School District. The project delivers pre-packaged boxes of food and grocery items to three low income apartment complexes in the West Chester area. The pantry targets families whose children have been identifi ed as needing supplemental food assistance.

Leah Aguilar is the Community Outreach Liaison for a project called Butler County Success. She helps families sign-up for monthly deliveries from the Mobile Pantry.

“Many families haven’t heard about the Mobile Pantry,” Leah explained. “I had one mom with three kids who had just started a job but wasn’t going to get a paycheck for another week. She had no food, but I signed her up for Mobile Pantry and got her the emergency food she needed.”

Aguilar said a lot of families don’t have cars, so the mobile pantry is a big help for them. “Many of our families are working but have 5-6 kids to feed,” she said. “Even if they get food stamps, that’s not enough to get them through the month, so the Mobile Pantry really helps them feed their families.”

Many people are unaware of the fact that they qualify for the federal food stamp program. Shared Harvest’s Food Stamp Outreach program is designed to educate potential food stamp recipients and assist with the task of fi lling out the paperwork.

Lori Dow appreciated the assistance she received from the foodbank’s Food Stamp Outreach Coordinator, Gloria Bateman. “She helped me so much in fi ling the application and speeding up the time in which I started receiving benefi ts,” Dow said.

Lori has custody of her seven-year old grandson and said she needed help to feed him, because her fi ance wasn’t earning much money in the winter in the construction industry. “Every dollar counts, so qualifying for food stamps to help feed our grandson made a big difference,” she said. “The money we didn’t have to spend on food, helped to pay other bills.”

Local food pantries and social service agencies participate in Food Stamp Outreach by hosting weekly visits from outreach staff. The program educates clients about the nutritional benefi ts of the Food Stamp Program as well as the application process for people who meet the eligibility guidelines. The staff helps clients complete the application, collect other neccessary documents and fax completed documents to Butler County Job and Family Services. This project will expand into Warren County in 2007.

New Back Pack Program aids children

Volunteers make the job easier

Children from needy families have been able to count on a solid meal at school through the federal free and reduced price lunch program, but ensuring they have suffi cient food on weekends has always been a concern.

Shared Harvest’s Back Pack Program addresses that issue by providing easy-to-prepare food that elementary school children can take home for weekend meals. Butler County Education Services has identifi ed children for this project through its Butler County Success program.

The food is delivered to participating schools on Fridays and is discretely placed in the backpacks of the kids at the end of the school day. “These kids are really needy, and this food may be all they get for the weekend,” said Fairfi eld South Elementary Principal Leslie Laney.

“Unfortunately, a lot of our parents aren’t home with their kids on weekends, so it’s nice to know the children can go to this backpack of food and fi nd something to fi x for a meal,” said Danyel McDaniel, community liaison for Hamilton City Schools.

The backpacks contain items such as nutrition bars, fl ip top soups, pasta, stew, beans and weenies, fruit cups, cereal packets, juice drinks and other snack items.

“One little boy was so darling,” principal Laney said. “As we put the food in his backpack, he said ‘I hope I get tuna fi sh again, because it’s my favorite!’ ”

Volunteers are a key component in the success of Shared Harvest Foodbank. They spend countless hours packing boxes of food for senior citizens or boxes delivered to schools for the new Back Pack project. Others get involved writing thank-you letters to donors or assisting with data processing.

Melanie and Chuck Roesch have been assisting the foodbank for 17 years, with Chuck serving on the Board of Directors and Melanie assisting with a host of volunteer projects.

“I’ve always felt the need to give back to my community, and Shared Harvest is one of the most well-run charitable organizations around,” Melanie said. “I like the fact the foodbank’s reach is so widespread, serving people in many counties and touching a lot of non-profi t agencies.”

Liz Colantuono credits Melanie with getting her involved as a foodbank volunteer. “I really feel comfortable at Shared Harvest,” Colantuono said. “We don’t always think about people in our neighborhood who have so much less than we do, especially children.”

Chuck Osso hands Back Pack boxes to Jill Hede, Community Laision for Lakota Schools.

New technology helps people in need

The Holiday Data Base: Butler County’s Holiday Community Project uses web-based registration for families needing help during the Thanksgiving to Christmas holiday season as well as people who want to volunteer or offer fi nancial assistance. Since participating agencies register families online, it eliminates duplication and ensures that the needs of the maximum number of people can be fulfi lled. Shared Harvest, Butler County 211 and Butler County United Way sponsor the project.

The Benefi t Bank: Shared Harvest Foodbank is hosting an Americorps*Vista volunteer for two years. Meredith Bateman is training staff and volunteers at local food pantries to serve as counselors for a program called the Benefi t Bank. The free computer technology helps low income families fi nd out if they’re eligible for programs such as Food Stamps, Healthy Start/Healthy Families, Medicare Savings Program, child care subsidies and the Home Energy Assistance Program.

“It educates clients about a variety of services they might not know about, and it lets them decide which programs might be good for their family,” said Americorps*Vista Volunteer Bateman.

Technological advances are making it easier to link people with agencies that can meet their needs.

Virtual Case Manager: The Greater Cincinnati Foundation awarded Shared Harvest a $10,000 grant to develop the Virtual Case Manager Project. It is designed to help people seeking assistance from food pantries to become more self-reliant. Participating agencies can electronically register a client for service and also electronically refer them to other services. By utilizing computer technology and Internet connections, pantries and other charities can manage clients’ needs and services to get a total picture of the services each client receives.

“This $1 is all I have. In giving this, I pray the Lord blesses me with more so I can help more people. Merry Christmas.” Bonnie, Hamilton.

“In the late 1950’s and early 1960’s when the factories were laying off their employees, our family became one of the needy. Thanks to friends and family members, we made it through. I know what it means to want. I’m alone now but can help some. Hope this $5 will put food of some sort on the table of a needy family.”Ruth, Camden.

“I’m a disabled veteran, and I know what hunger is all about. We don’t have much, but I am giving $2. I hope this will put food on the table for someone less fortunate. This will make my Thanksgiving much better.”Joseph, Hamilton.

“I’m 10-years old and my sister is 8. We live with our grandma and uncle. We live on a fi xed income. Here’s $3 for the Food Relief to help the less fortunate. Me and my sister are taking care of grandma, because she had surgery on her foot.”Corey, Maria, Uncle Jeff and grandma. Hamilton

“I am a widow, but I felt like giving something to the Foodbank. There are a lot of people hurting in Middletown from the AK Steel lockout. So sad for the little children also.”Elizabeth, Fairfield.

“I am widowed, but I am making ends meet and am blessed. Here’s what I can afford right now to help.” Sheila, Hamilton.

“Hope this helps. We are both very senior citizens, could be in better health, but we have a lot to be thankful for, so maybe we can help someone else.” Rosemary, Hamilton.

“I know it is just a small amount- but every little bit helps. If everyone who reads the JournalNews would give just one or two dollars, we could feed many people. May God bless your efforts tenfold! Merry Christmas- Peace on Earth!”Bitsy, Hamilton.

The response to the third annual JournalNews Food Relief project was overwhelming in 2006. From Thanksgiving through Christmas, readers of the Hamilton newspaper were asked to give what they could to Shared Harvest Foodbank to help fi ght hunger.

A total of 723 people donated $19,028, compared to $11,920 in 2005, a 66 percent increase! Gifts ranged from $1 to $500.

Our thanks to the staff of the JournalNews and Cox Ohio Newspapers for their continued efforts to put food on the table of our neighbors in need.
