Shape

A closed two-dimensional figure Described or delineated by a line or edge

Shapes are everywhere

If you look around you, you will notice that almost everything we see is made up of a Shape or combination of Shapes.

Page 6: SHAPING UP Photo by L. E. Denyer. 2 ARTISTIC ELEMENTS: SHAPES.

Some of the more common ones we have given names to, i.e.: Circle square Rectangle Triangles

Others are so unique we call them freeform shapes

Two Types of Shapes

Shapes are organized into two types: GEOMETRIC ORGANIC

Geometric shapes: are usually angular and appear frequently in

man-made objects (square, triangle, circle) Organic shapes:

are usually more rounded and appear most often in nature (irregular in outline)

In these Picasso paintings, where do you see the different types of shapes? (geometric & organic)

Architectural Example:

Architecture, such as this example by Frank Lloyd Wright, is usually composed of geometric forms

These forms are most often thought of as constructed or made

Categories of Shapes

Geometric Organic Positive Negative Static Dynamic

Geometric Shapes

Circles, Squares, rectangles, triangles Seen in architecture and manufactured

items

Page 12: SHAPING UP Photo by L. E. Denyer. 2 ARTISTIC ELEMENTS: SHAPES.

Organic Shapes

Leaves, seashells, flowers, etc. As often seen in nature Characteristics that are free flowing,

informal and irregular

Page 13: SHAPING UP Photo by L. E. Denyer. 2 ARTISTIC ELEMENTS: SHAPES.

Positive Shapes

In drawings, paintings, photographs, and other artworks Shapes are the solid forms

In a sculpture, Shapes are the solid form of the object

Page 14: SHAPING UP Photo by L. E. Denyer. 2 ARTISTIC ELEMENTS: SHAPES.

Negative Space

In a drawing The space around the positive shape Such as the shape around the bowl of fruit

In sculpture The empty shape around and between the

sculptures

Static Shape

Shapes that appear stable and resting

Page 16: SHAPING UP Photo by L. E. Denyer. 2 ARTISTIC ELEMENTS: SHAPES.

Dynamic Shape

Shapes that appear to be moving and active

Sidra, 6th grade, Cut Paper Collage

This is a colored paper collage made up of organic shapes that overlap.

If you look carefully, you may see that this composition was based on the Fibonacci Numerals.

Each shape represents the sequence of numbers found in Fibonacci's order: 0,1,2,3,5,8,13,21...

Note the rounded edges of the shapes.

Would you recognize these shapes in nature?

Organic Shapes

How many shapes do you recognize in this work?

Why do you think you notice the shapes first in this sculpture?

This is an assemblage. Nevelson collected scraps of wood and assembled this sculpture. She painted it one color. By doing this, the viewer is made more aware of the many shapes of the wood and the spaces between the wood

Louise Nevelson (American, born Russia), 1900-1988, Sky Cathedral, 1958 wood, painted black, 115 x 135 x 20", Albright-Knox Art Gallery, NY

Shapes in Designs

Shapes in house decor and interior design can be used to add interest, style, theme to a design like a door

Shape in interior design depends on the function of the object like a kitchen cabinet door

Natural shapes forming patterns on wood or stone may help increase visual appeal in interior design

Page 21: SHAPING UP Photo by L. E. Denyer. 2 ARTISTIC ELEMENTS: SHAPES.

You can combine simple shapes to make more complex shapes

Pathways – Negative Space

Pathways and walkways define negative spaces in designs

Page 25: SHAPING UP Photo by L. E. Denyer. 2 ARTISTIC ELEMENTS: SHAPES.

Furnishing – Positive Space

Furnishing and fixtures define positive spaces in living spaces
