They've all come to see you- to see whether you can stand up to your record's reputation. It's all very well turning out a good record-but if you don't go down well on stage, that's it." The speaker giving with these pearls of wisdom was Clint Wai-wick, the Moody Blues 24 -year -old bass guitarist. And he was well -qualified to speak on the subject. With the Moodies "Go Now" well up in the charts, here they were on their first tour with everyone watching to see if they could live up to their record's reputation. I was sitting in their dressing room on the second night of the tour surrounded by umpteen tins of coke, packets of cigar- ettes and various Moody Blues, with a couple of managers, road managers and other odd people thrown in for good say the MOODY BLUES to Christine Osbourne measure_ So how did they feel about play- ing to such a large, critical audience, 1 asked? The answers were varied. Clint "had butterflies," drummer Graeme was plain "frit"-his grammar, not mine! -and pianist Mike felt "orrible" but "'appy"-again his English, not yours truly's. The other two listened with just a hint of superiority. "I started when I was 11 on a stage the same size as this one," said lead vocalist Denny, "So it wasn't so bad." And Ray wasn't at all nervous. "My first ever show was at the Birmingham Hippodrome when I was 16-and I was out there all on my own that time!" The general opinion was that this is a big opportunity for them not just to show themselves to the public on a large scale. but to get experience and a really good stage act. "We're planning on changing the routine every week if we have time," Mike told me. "Our trouble is we're all perfec- tionists. We come off stage happy, pleased we've gone down well-but not satisfied. Even while they're still clapping out there, I'm thinking 'What can we do to better the act' all the time." Seeing as the Moodies were in a reason- ably serious frame of mind for once, I decided to throw in a few more serious questions-like how they felt about the tour, the audiences, the critics and other such topics in the hope of getting some sensible answers out of them. Graeme kicked off. "Makes no difference to me whether the audience is small, medium or large-I'm always 'frit' before I go on. Critics don't worry me. If you're playing to the audience and they're receiving you, that's all that matters-not what the critics say." Denny: "We need this tour. We've only been together eight months so we want to give people the chance to see us and know our record wasn't just a fluke. And working with Chuck is a knockout. He's a real showman, which is something I'd like to be. No, the audience doesn't bother me much. film star now!AS Stanley Holloway would say "Wiv a little bit of luck" Billy Fury should be better off

by quite a few quid in three months' time. But he'll need rain as well as luck.Before you all start calling me mad, let me explain that rain plays a big part in the

horse racing side of Billy's life these days. In fact, he reckons that rain is the secret ofAnselmo's success on the track of late.

"After the Derby, he didn't do any good," Billy reminded me. "Lots of people were back-ing him and I felt lousy. Now he's licking the hide off horses that have beaten him before.

"He likes mud. If the ground'shard, it's no good for him, but ifhe can dig his hooves into somemud, he's okay."

Anselmo-who must be the onlyfilm star horse about-is enteredfor the Champion Hurdle in March.And the prize money is a cool taxfree £8,000.

Billy smiled at the thought ofall that loot, then said: "The prizemoney for winning the Derby is£72,000. Another few yards and wecould have won that, I think."

More reasons for Billy gettingricher? Right. How about thiscracking record he's got out now.I think "I'm Lost Without You"is absolutely great and one of thebest discs out since "Needles AndPins" which I'm still raving about.

Now this record is zooming upthe charts faster than rising pricesand the royalties soon to goBilly's way will amount to agood bit. Which brings us nicelyto the subject of Billy's recordreleases.

SCARED"I leave it up to Dick Rowe."

Billy admitted. "He shows mewhat he's picked out. It's up toDick and Larry Parries. Then wego through them for a few hoursand decide which one is best."

I asked Billy why the Gamblers,his backing group, don't get usedon his records.

"The ones they do with me getput on 'B' sides and LPs," hereplied, taking a last drag froma cigarette and stubbing it outin an already full ash tray. "Ilike working with them 'cause wecan work out the arrangementswell together.

"I'm scared of recording withbig orchestras 'cause I never knowwhat they've got worked out. Theyshow me their arrangement and

I get in with it. They always useorchestras on my records, though.and it works out okay."

If you want another reason forBilly's coming money there's hisnation-wide tour due to start inMarch, He wasn't quite sure ofall the details when I spoke tohim, but he revealed one interest-ing aspect.

"I'll be backed by a big bandsupplementing the Gamblers," hetold me. "Don't know how it'sgonna sound."

The tour goes out pretty well atthe same time as Billy's film "I'veGotta Horse" is due for generalrelease.

"We do musical story numbers,not songs that would be out onsingles," he pointed out. "We doa lot of songs with dancing aboutas well.

"Anselmo's got a good part,"he cracked. "There was one scenewhere Michael Medwin and LeslieDwyer had to stand in front ofhim and they were worried in casehe kicked them. He's temperamental,you see. They kept muffing theirlines."

What with a. hectic summerseason at Great Yarmouth, thefilm to do, recording, TV appear-ances and other odds and ends,Billy had a pretty hectic timeduring the last few months. Un-fortunately, it took its toll on hishealth.

"I had to go into hospital forfive days. They thought I hadsomething wrong with me andthey gave me lots of tests andcheck-ups," he said. "It was akind of delayed action exhaustionafter all the work I'd been doing."

Billy looks a lot thinner thesedays and he said that aroundChristmas time he lost a lot ofweight and had to keep tighteninghis belt to prevent losing histrousers!

Billy's voice has been alteringsomewhat lately, too. He laughedat my suggestion that he soundeda bit like Tony Newley on "I'mLost Without You" I2ut agreedthat there was a change in histone.

DIFFICULT"It came after 'It's Only Make

Believe'," he stated. "I had to doit a few times and it's a difficultsong to do. With 'Halfway ToParadise,' the song goes alongthen rises a bit, that's mucheasier.

"But my voice has been chang-ing quite a bit, now I think I'vegot a wider range. I can getsome of the notes that I couldn'treach before."

Billy had been sitting in a chairwith his legs over the arm whilewe had been talking. Now andthen he'd get up and walk to thewindow, but he looked completelyat ease. No doubt his spell inhospital did him a world of good.

"I feel much better now," hesaid thankfully. "I'm going off fortwo weeks in Israel soon. then I'llhave to take it easy from time totime."

But if he continues to turn outsuch good records, as he no doubtwill, I bet he won't have muchtime to rest.

ANSWERS TO DEATH WAVEUPON MY LIFE! No shortage of views on death discs among RM

readers. A couple of weeks ago I asked how you felt about them.Some of you told me. Can't say I'm much wiser because the opinions

tend to cancel each other out. Here's a selection:-"I have just read David Griffiths' mock psychological article on death

discs and found it almost as hilarious as the record he described," writesR, Granger. "I wonder if he realises how many people buy these recordsbecause they are the funniest thing since Spike Milligan?" (No, I don'trealise. How many?) "The serious voice, the strings, the heavenly choir,the ridiculous lyrics and-always the funniest-the talking bit. Don't getme wrong, this is no 'sick' humour but a good laugh at commercialismat its worst."

Oh.Richard Howard tends to agree:

"All I got from these records wasa good laugh! The Shangri-Lasdisc should be entered as a comedydisc . . ITV and BBC must learnto act like adults and realise thata record is only a record and thatits lyrics make it no exception.Wake up you two channels and playall discs - whether you think theyare right for the teenage marketor not. 'Oh where oh where canmy baby be? The Lord has takenher away from me.' I ask you-what on earth do they expect withlines like this? I can see nothingmorbid here, in fact I've neverlaughed so much in all my life!"

FUNNY?When a reader makes a con-

fession like that, I don't knowwhether to laugh (embarrassed -type) or shudder. However clumsyand fatuous such lyrics may be,it's difficult to believe they producethe funniest comedy ever. Evenmaking allowances for the ten-dency to laugh at frighteningmatters, it does seem to me to bea little sick to giggle at death. Itimplies indifference to the unhappi-ness of others: we can be surethat the laughers won't be fallingabout wt.en people they know andcare about die.

I confess to more sympathy withthe views of David R. Chamberswho asks: "What is wrong with asong about death? Many of therecords in the present top 50 aresad and the death lyric is obviouslythe next step." Quite so. But whatI'm wondering is why it is feltnecessary to take that step - and,once that step has been taken,what's the next step?

Michael Hughes puts it this way:"Pop music surely is meant to becheerful. I fail to see there is any-thing cheerful or, for that matterentertaining in death discs . . .

(All the same, a lot of buyers-who don't want to be cheered up-are entertained.) "Thinking back afew years, a singer named RickyValance topped the British charts

with a death disc, namely 'TellLaura I Love Her.' What happenedafterwards. Nothing. PRE-CISELY!"

That story is worth rememberingin detail. An American namedRay Peterson had a Stateside hitwith the number and John Leytonwas the first British singer to jumpon to this death wagon. But -perhaps luckily for him - he wasin process of changing labels andthe record was delayed and delayeduntil, by the time it was issued, itattracted practically no attention.Decca withdrew the Peterson discon the grounds that it was in badtaste. EMI came out with the un-known Ricky Valance's version andit shot to number one. So - Deccadecided that maybe the Petersondisc wasn't so offensive after all.Its taste miraculously improved.the Peterson was re -issued!

After his one hit, Ricky sankback into obscurity and eventuallywent bankrupt.

The moral here seems to be this:If you are looking for a quickclean-up short-term career in showbiz it may be worth risking thelimited plugging a death -disc getson the air, and it may be worthrisking unfavourable publicity if youdo a death -disc. But if you wanta long career you would be ill-advised to record a song that dwellsmorbidly on death. The really tooartistes never do such numbers.

Most readers agree with methat there's no reasonable case forbanning death discs. A couple ofletters are worth quoting for thestrangeness of the way they expresstheir opposition to censorship.KevanHedderly says: "I see no reasonat all why certain discs should bebanned just because they mentiondeath. Films, TV and books alldeal quite liberally with the subjectwithout a murmur of disapprovalor of banning them . . Anyhow,

TWINKLEwhy restrict 'Leader Of The Pack'and 'Terry' when 'Ringo,' Gold-finger,"Three Bells' and otherdeath discs are not banned? Andwhy stick to banning just deathdiscs; why not all those which havea so-called harmful effect on today'syouth. Examples: 'Ain't It TheTruth' - bad grammer (that'sKevan's spelling) "and 'House OfThe Rising Sun' - about a gambl-ing den." It's an interesting pointbut I think there's quite adifference between death and theacceptable use of a bit of coloquialspeech such as "Ain't."

John Moody strongly favoursdeath: "The people who ban theserecords want to be deported to theNorth Pole and left to rot awaythen we would not have to listento them." No comment worthmaking on that!

NO RESPECTReady, Steady Go doesn't seem to

have gained much respect for itsstand in banning "Terry." WritesPaul Valentine: "Considering thetrash served up weekly by RSG I

can't see where they got their highand mighty principles from sosuddenly." And J. Jolly sees it allas a fiendish plot: "Perhaps RSGbanned Twinkle and the Shangri-Las because it is a programmewhich caters primarily for themouldy mods."

Finally, a letter from someone(signature looks like M. Crussain)who says he doesn't think deathsongs are wrong. He wrote a poembecause he was blue about a death.Well, I know Messrs. JIMMY RADCLIFFE: Long AfterTonight Is All Over; What I WantI Can Never Have (Stateside SS374). A Bacharach-David song fora talented character who has re-corded Gene Pitney. Nice throatysound to his voice as he builds andbuilds on a rather huge ballad. Agood arrangement; a disc thatcould click as Jimmy is here topromote himself.

FOR DEL SHANNONDEL SHANNON, who flew into Britain last week to the welcome news that his new single,

"Keep Searchin' (We'll Follow The Sun)" had leapt into the RM Top 50 at number 30will return to Britain in three months' time to headline a nation-wide tour.

With Del came his personal mana-ger, Irving Micahnick, who handlesa score of pop acts, Johnny and theHurricanes among them, to nego-tiate terms for the tour withRichard Armitage of the Noel GayOrganisation.

The tour is expected to start inthe second week of April and willrun for a maximum of three weeks.Dates in Ireland will also be in-cluded in the schedule.

Del himself has expressed a de-sire that Peter and Gordon, handledby the Noel Gay outfit, should alsobe on the tour.

In London last week, Del wasfeted at a reception held in hishonour at EMI House, ManchesterSquare, where he sang live, "HatsOff To Larry", "Swiss Maid","Runaway", and the new one."Keep Searchin'."

The movie was made for theAmerican and South African mar-kets, RM was told, when enquirieswere made.

WATCHEDby a crowd of more than 1,200, The Sidekicks from

North London won Sunday's heat of the Record Mirror -sponsored "All Britain Beat '65" contest at Wimbledon Palais.

And the group won easily . . with the highest number of votesyet cast in a heat of the contest -318. Only a semi-final winningoutfit has had more votes.

Second, in a tie, were Themselves, from Isleworth, and theEast Ham -based Prospectors. They had 1E5 votes each. Now thecontest, which is tremendously successful, builds towards thegrand final before an all-star panel on February 28. There aretwo more heats, then the last two semi-finals which are onFebruary 7 and 14. On February 21, at Wimbledon Palais ofcourse, the groups coming third in the semi-finals will fight outa separate contest to put one of their number into the GrandFinal.

The organisers report: "Absolutely no room for any moregroups in the remaining heats. We're all' full up. Sorry."

Proby newone-nightertour . . .P. J. Proby has been signed to

star in his own one-nighter Britishtour. It begins on March 1 - eightdays after his tour with Cilia Black.

"The P. J. Proby Show" is beingpresented by Joe Collins andMervin Cann and will last for twoweeks. Sandra Barry is also onthe bill and the Moody Blues arebeing negotiated.

P.J. will be backed by the P. J.Proby Orchestra, a 14 -piece outfit,which will he specially assembledfor the singer. A wide variety ofinstruments to suit Prohy's manyvoices will be used.

KINKS ON

CARRIERThe Beatles may have had extra -

large amplifiers built for the hugeopen-air stadiums on their lastAmerican tour but they've neverplayed through the Tannoy systemon an aircraft carrier.

The Kinks did, though, when theywere in the South of France, totake part in a film to be enteredin the Montreux Film Festival thisyear.

It happened on the USS Saratoga,anchored at Marseille, last week.

The Kinks open their spot walkingdown a Marseille street, playingguitars and miming to their record-ing of "Too Much MonkeyBusiness." The next shots show thegroup playing "All Day And All OfThe Night" aboard the aircraftcarrier.

After the filming was finished,the Kinks set up their equipmentin the hangar hay and gave a liveshow for the American crew, usingthe ship's own amplification equip-ment. The earthy sound of theKinks was heard in every part ofthe ship until Peter Quaife yelledinto the microphone: "Action Sta-tions," and everyone went dashingoff to their duty posts.

WHO TAXES BEATLOOTWHO should deduct tax from the Beatles' earnings on their

tour of America last autumn? H.M. Government or theGovernment of the United States?

Well, tax officials of both countries are still negotiatingwhich one will collect the levy on the cash that the Beatlestook away from the States in August and September.

A spokesman of the New Yorkoffice of the U.S. Internal RevenueService told our correspondent that"Ordinarily, we simply would abideby the Treaty but in this casethere may be some question on thematter of the time -limit - theStatute of Limitations may apply."

Under the Treaty to which hereferred, British and Americanartistes are allowed to keep alltheir earnings in both countriesand pay tax to only their ownGovernment. The tax official saidit was not a special case. "Thesame questions have arisen beforewith very big entertainment stars."

But he said that it was a matterof "technical interpretation of thetax rules."

Yeh") by taking a winter sports holiday in Austria, Peter Coe-he's theone who takes the tenor sax solo on the disc-is staying at home practising.

He paused to tell the RM what life with Fame is like: "Success has madea noticeable difference to Georgie. Eighteen months ago, when I first knewhim, he was very shy. Not just personally, he was mike -shy on the job,never wanting to speak to the crowd. Now, the fact that his music is beingaccepted has made a tremendous difference. He knows the public is withhim and it has given him a lot of confidence. Everybody in the group isplaying better.

"We're sorry we'vehad to do such a lot ofmiming on televisionlately. We can play"Yeh, Yeh" a lot betterthan we do on the disc!And as a matter of fact,miming is hard work.We have to spend acouple of hours stand-ing in position underhot TV studio lightsand then maybe an-other couple of hoursrehearsing our move-ments. Thus, it takesall day to come up withthree minutes ofsilence! We'd soonerbe blowing."

THE ISLEY BROTHERS: original recorders of "Shout"

THE 'SHOUT' SAGAjT all began on a warm summer

evening in 1959. On stage beforea capacity audience at the

Howard Theatre, Washington D.C.three young men were winding uptheir highly successful performancewith an energetic version of JackieWilson's million -seller, "Lonely Tear-drops." The boys' soaring vocaltalent and zestful agility had goneover very big that night, and theywere well aware of their triumph asthey launched into their finale. Butif they had reckoned on being backin the dressing -room a couple ofminutes later, then they could hardlyhave been more mistaken.

As anyone familiar with "LonelyTeardrops" 'will recall, the song'ssoulful climax and subsequent fade-outcentre around the words "Say youwill." On the night in question, thetrio had about reached this point inthe song when wham! It happened.Suddenly all three performers seemedto sense the full extent of the deli-rium. and they reacted in the onlyPossible way they knew how. Insteadof bringing their show to a close asplanned, they decided to prolong theirfinale and prove to themselves thatthey could ride such a wave ofhysteria all the way to its show -stopping conclusion.

'The problem of how to make"Lonely Teardrops" six times longerthan usual without singing it throughfive more times never really arosethanks to the group's lead singer. Forlying in reserve behind his manyother talents was a rare genius forspontaneous improvisation, and thiswas promptly put to work on the"Say you will" bit.

The next line in the sequence was"Say you love me" which producednoticeably louder "Yes" responsesfrom the fans. More new wordsfollowed, all adding to the ever-increasing chaos, and then. just asthe leader was racking his brain forsomething to follow the line "I wantyou to know", the Big Momentarrived. With a stroke of supremeinspiration, he threw back his headand yelled: "You know, YOU makeme want to SHOUT!"

"Shout". That was the word thecrowd had been waiting for. It wasthe trigger which released their in-hibitions into a seething. pulsatingtorrent. It made them jump andscream and stamp until the wholeplace broke up into utter pande-monium, and a brand new namejoined the bill -topping elite-the IsletBrothers.

Amongst those in the HowardTheatre that night was a gent namedAugie Bloom, a promotion man forRCA Victor Records. Augie wasthere quite by chance, but after wit-nessing the fantastic scenes he knewwhere his duty lay. When the boys

of a song' serieswere finally allowed to leave thestage they found him waiting forthem. He soon convinced them thatwhat had just taken place wouldsound equally good on record, andtold them to report to the RCAstudios as soon as possible to demon-strate the number to the company'sA & R men, Hugo and Luigi.

At the studios Hugo and Luigigrimaced a little when they firstheard it, but they granted a sessionanyway. It began at 10 o'clock onenight in early August 1959. and lastedfor three hours. Backing the brotherswere a fine guitarist named JoeRichardson who now plays for theShirelles, a Professor HermanStephens, organ (the Professor wasorganist in the boys' family churchand' they insisted he should accompanythem) and six studio musicians. Inall, there were about six real 'takes'.

The result hit the American marketvery soon afterwards, on August 17th,1959. It was, and still is, fourminutes twenty seconds of recordeddynamite spread over two sides of adisc, and went on to sell a millionand a quarter copies.

At the height of the Twist craze inMay 1962, "Shout" again hit theAmerican charts in a huge way.reaching number six in "Bill -board"and again selling a million-this timefor Joey Dee. As O'Kelly put it."Second only to 'The Twist' itself.our song, 'Shout' was the mostpopular number with the twisters."

The song also figured in the midstof another pop revolution-the BritishBeat- Boom. Popular Midlands groupthe Redcaps, who were said to havebeen the answer to the Beatles, hada go at it in August 1963, but withoutmuch success.

Then, last year, the number finallyachieved its long -deserved Britishchart status. It was the song whichintroduced big -voiced newcomer Luluto the scene, and was easily one ofthe best -produced British discs of theyear. It spent several weeks in theTop Ten.

There are dozens of lesser -knownrecordings of "Shout" on the market.Dion has turned in a very competentone, and there is even a version byKeely Smith. Then there is theShangri-Las spanking new treatmentwhich should be released here in afew months' time.

Certainly, the wild and wonderful"Shout" has earned, and will continueto earn, its exalted place amongst

Of course, it's a differentmatter if the song isn't new.Say a great American discdoesn't happen here. Maybeour market isn't ready yetfor that kind of sound nrsong. Maybe it's too"coloured" or too hip. Butwhatever the reason, it's ashame to let a good song godown the drain. I'm all for a"British" version a fewmonths later. One deliber-ately designed to meet theneeds of our market.

Manfred Mann is an out-standing example of this.The Exciters' "Do Wah DiddyDiddy" didn't see the light ofday here. It was a knockoutsong. And Manfred made

E BIG FIGHTsure it wasn't wasted. Thereare umpteen other examplesin the charts right now. Andthough, like you, I may havepersonally p ref erred theoriginal versions, I'd rathersee a British record 'happen'than none at all.

What upsets me mostabout this particular ''battle"is that I'm fighting a friend.One of my best in the busi-ness. Cilia is a sweetie. I'vea lot of admiration for her.She and her road manager,Bobby Willis, often drop byat the flat. We get alongfine. And I hope we still willafter the 'fight' is finished!

I'm certainly not knockingCilia. Far from it. I thinkshe's made a marvellousrecord. Certainly her bestso far. But then I say thatevery time. Much more'obvious' than the Americanone.

But even if I wasn't per-sonally involved, I think it'sa pity she has to recordsomeone else's current song.She's more than good enoughto take any great new songand turn it into a hit.

As it is, I sincerely believemy Righteous Brothersrecord is terrific. "An emo-tional experience," it's beencalled. It's an original crea-tion from the extraordinarymind of Phil Spector. Andthough Cilia's certainly isn'ta copy, it's definitely in-

The outcome? We can butwait and see. I've got betson that both will make theTop Ten. After this week'smassive radio and TV on-slaught, The Righteous mighteven overtake her. Which-ever record wins, there'sonly one real winner. Andthat's the publisher!

But, if The RighteousBrothers' record does pipCilia at the post-or at leastgive her a real run for hermoney, I hope it might make

British A and R men Minktwice about "knocking off" acurrent really original bigAmerican record and con-centrate instead on findingnew songs by local writersand turning them into hits.

Of course, the last laughsdefinitely against me.Because I'll bet you anythingthat my next big promotionassignment will be to rusharound with a good British'cover' . . !

Sam singswith his usual distinctive and in-teresting vocal tones, while a drumPatters away ceaselessly in thebackdrop. A small hit definitely, abig hit maybe, but not as goodas many of his sides which didn'tmake the charts. Does grow onYOU though, but the backing tendsto be rather dominant. Flip, fromhis latest album is a lovely ballad,self -penned, and with a greatsound to it. Better than side one.but not as commercial.

THE GAMBLERS: Now I'm AllAlone; Find Out What's Happening(Decca F 12060). Above -averagebeat group offering, with a fine andrich sound behind the vocal line-upGroup is talented enough to score,but the number might not, thistime, be strong enough.

TONY OSBORNE: A Shot In TheDark; The Blue Waltz (HMV Pop1385). Aonther movie theme byHenry Mancini. Harmonica, blues.ily laid down, to a simple orches-tral backing. It builds well, power-fully percussive.

New coloured group, twoboys, two girls, with a piano -dominated opening to their firstdisc. Marty Wilde A and R'd thesession with a good feel for beatand vocal Punch. PETER, PAUL AND MARY: ForLovin' Me; Monday Morning (War-ner Brothers WB 152). Brisk littlefolk song with a fair amount ofappeal, though without really doinganything new or original. Vocaltouches competent as ever. Notreally a chart potenial.

JAMES BROWN: Have MercyBaby; Just Won't Do Right (LondonHL 9945). Frenzied, frenetic andraucous rhythm 'n' blues fromAmerica's "King" James and hisFamous Flames. Heavy sax back-ing and high shrieking vocal andthundering beat. Should do well.

CRAIG DOUGLAS: Across TheStreet; Party Girl (Fontana TF 525).Gene Pitney wrote this one for thesmooth -voiced Craig. Nicely laiddown beat and a vocal that getsthe maximum pungency from thelyrics. Nice love -song ballad; com-mercially direct. Watch it.

DON COVAY: Take This Hurt OffMe; Please Don't Let Me Know(Atlantic 4016). A similar formulato Don's past "Mercy, Mercy"disc-a pounder of an R and BPerformance. Fair excitement, wellcontrolled. Wierd vocal touches.Good for dancing.JONI ADAMS: Love at Last YouHave Found Me; People Say(Columbia DB 7457). This is afirst-class recording by a first-classsong -seller. Joni has a good, clearvoice and this Aznavour ballad, ofdelicate intricacy, really demandsa good performance. Good, drama-tic, saleable.SAMMY KING AND THE VOL-TAIRS: Only You (And YouAlone); A Kiss, A Promise (HMVPop 1384). The old Platters' hit,dressed up nostalgically by high -voiced Sammy. String -laden back-ing - a straight, no -gimmicktreatment all round. Song standsthis revival.

SHIRLEY ELLIS: The NameGame; Whisper To Me Wind (Lon-don HLR 9946). Another gimmickyrecord, quite big in the States. Anovelty vocal with a dead -pan sortof approach. Lyrics well worth aclose listen, and the beat isn't halfbad, either. Good singer, this girl.IRMA THOMAS: He's My Guy;A True, True Love (Liberty 66080).Class singer; class song. This onecould help Irma a lot-it has atremendous grow -on -you appeal.Nicely backed, chorally, with Irmafair belting her enthusiasm. We'dlike to see this one in the charts.

SKIN KINGIN the hurly-burly world of

skin -bashing, the nameBobbie Graham, commands alot of respect. He's one ofthe top session men; hasalso produced records forgroups like the PrettyThings; has now come outinto the open, as it were,with his own recording of"Skin Deep," on Fontana-it's his tribute to one of hisidols, drummer LouisBellson.

Actually, I'd need a couple ofpages to list fully all the workBobby has got through. Actually,too, he used to be a dustman inthe employ of Edmonton BoroughCouncil, later becoming a park at-tendant on the grounds that thescenery was better.

FIRST KITAnyway, Bobbie got his first drum

kit at the age of eight. He liked,even then, Messrs. Krupa, Rich,Clare, Ganley, Benson and Verrell.ProfeSsional drumming for Bobbieactually started with a season at aButlin camp, with the Stormers andwith Teddy Foster's big band.

Then he went with Mike Berryand the Outlaws. Then Joe Brownand Bruvvers. Then six monthswith Marty Wilde. Then he wentinto the session field . . so standby for a lot more name-dropping.Honest! - it reads like a Who'sWho of pop music.

He's been on approximately 300different singles, many of themhuge hits. Starting with JohnLeyton's "Johnny Remember Me,'then Mike Berry's "Tribute ToBuddy Holly"; Leyton's "WildWind"; Joe Brown's "Picture ofYou"; Joe's "Tender Look"; the

P. J. Proby LP, EP and singles;eighty per cent of Bill Fury's re-leases; all Kathy Kirby's records;Dusty Springfield's album and someof her singles; the Kiki Dee singles;and, incidentally, a yet -to -come re-lease by Jimmy Page which folk -in -the -know reckon WILL be a hit.

Among current chartsters onwhich Bobbie can say: "I'm ondrums" are: Pet Clark's "Down-

town"; Twinkle's "Terry"; Proby's"Somewhere"; and the FrancoiseHardy "Et Meme". Among Ameri-can visitors who've recorded herewith the assistance of Bobbie areThe Everly Brothers, Del Shannonand Dionne Warwick.

Says Bobbie about his "SkinDeep" release: "Really I supposeit was a giggle. I really want toProduce records, not play on them.But it's also the realisation of achildhood ambition - I really dididolise that guy Bellson.

"People ask me about my ownfavourites. Well, I rate Jimmy Pageon guitar; Jim Sullivan on electricguitar; Alan Wale on bass. Butthere are a heck of a lot of greatmusicians about whom the record -buying public know nothing andcare less.

INTRIGUES

"I must say that P. J. Proby in-trigues me. And of all the girls Ithink Kiki Dee has rather morepotential than the others and couldmake the grade big this year.

"Thinking back to when I reallystarted out, I remember going towork at a cinema. And found thatthe band booked for the Sundayconcerts there was Ted Heath's. I

watched every single move madeby his drummer, Ronnie Verrell,Then I'd go out and buy all theHeath discs, slow 'em down from78 rpm to a speed at which I couldCOPY them note for note."

One day, I reckon, Bobby Grahamshould write a book about all thecharacters he'd worked with in thepop business. He, of all the sessionboys, has had a panoramic view ofthe whole scene - even if he hasspent most of his time gazing at theback view of the stars.

And, giggle or not, I've a sneak-ing feeling that his "Skin Deep" isgoing to do well.

LMARTY'S MARIONETTES!

MARTY WILDE handled the first recording session for the Marionettes, anall -coloured group of two boys, two girls. To get the background of this

highly -promising team, let's line 'em up first. There's Lance Ring (19), from India;Pauline Sibblies (16), a West Indian now living in Brixton; Jerry Kissoon (19) andhis sister Kathy (15), from Ealing. Lance and Pauline met first at a singing school,rehearsed a double act. Lady -of -music Valerie Avon suggested augmenting to aquartet. They met Kathy who, in turn, introduced her brother. Top side of theirDecca disc is "Whirlpool of Love," an old American number. Matey Marty isthoroughly thrilled with the group's approach and sound. So am I. I hope they do verywell . .

GITTE is eighteen, comes from Denmark, looks marvellous.She made her first record at the age of eight . . . but

very reluctantly. Her father (Otto Haenning), a singer,teacher and composer, asked her to record with him on aGerman song. Gitte preferred playing with her friends toattending rehearsals . . . but the promise of a new bicyclechanged her mind. Around six years ago she recorded aduet with Britain's Laurie London. And she's also recordedwith jazz bassist Oscar Pettiford - a yet -to -be -releasedversion of "It Might As Well Be Spring." Now she is at thetop in Scandinavia and Germany - and arrived in Britainlast week to promote her new record "The Heart That YouBreak." And Gitte's heart belongs in jazz singing.

ONE of the chief attractions about Del Shannon is his own individual style of singing andguitar playing. So it'll come as a shock to his fans if ever they hear his latest album

just issued in the States, it's tagged "Del Shannon sings Hank Williams" and contains someof the most authentic country and western music recorded by a pop singer for a long time.

"I guess I've always wanted to cut a country album," Del told me, "and as I've alwaysbeen an admirer of the late Hank Williams, his songs were the natural choice. But I foundthat after I recorded the LP, the urge to record more country music left me. This albumsatisfied my country urge, I guess. Now, I'm thinking of cutting a jazz album, but I've noidea when."

Del Shannon is currently inBritain to plug his mammoth UShit "Keep Searchin,' " but he isn'ttouring here until the spring.

I asked Del whether or not hisenormous success over the past fouryears has affected him at all as a

This onehas such titles as "She Cried,""Runnin' Scared," "Rag Doll," "IGo To Pieces," etc.

I quizzed Del as to why he'scutting so many albums, whereasbefore, when he recorded for the

REVIVALSThe new one is called, well, some-times they're called the Doltons,sometimes the Royaltones, some-times they're something else. ButI only use them on sessions, noton tour. I guess the reason whyI have a distinctive style isn't onlymy voice, but I do try to write asmuch of my material as possible,and Sing with as much sincerityas is possible. I think that sin-cerity counts a lot. I probablywon't be reviving any more singlesyet, like 'Handy Man' and 'Do YouWant To Dance' as I prefer record-ing my self -Penned material,

"When I'm in the studio weusually have several songs worked

out to record. You know, I Justlove recording. It's the greatestthing in the world for me. Butoccasionally a song which soundedgreat at rehearsal, just doesn'tmake it as a single. Then we haveto switch and use an alternative.

"Incidentally I've got my ownrecording company. The onlyartiste on it is Lloyd Brown, forwhom I wrote 'I Go To Pieces.'It flopped, but then Peter andGordon took an interest in it, soI re -wrote it for them, I don'treally have time to bother aboutmy label though, I think drat I'lljust keep Lloyd on the books . ."

A WAITSo for his fans, there'll be a short

wait until they can see DelShannon again, in the flesh. Andfor the quiet hitmaker comes yetanother in the seemingly endlesssuccession of hit discs he has beenmaking since the fabulous "Run-away" back in 1961.

I've a feeling that Del will stillbe making hits in many, manyyear's time .
