What do oranges have to do with Shakespeare?

Nell Gwyn

Oranges were sold to the audience at the Globe. When people didn't like the play, they threw the oranges to the actors. Nell Gwyn, the famous Restoration Shakespearean actress, was formerly an orange seller.

Twelfth Night ● It's celebrated on the 5th of January.● It's the eve of the Epiphany. ● People used to have parties.● It was traditional to play practical jokes on your

friends and neighbours.● It was a traditional day for plays or "mumming" (1)

(pantomime).

Twelfth Night, or What You Will

● It was first performed for the Queen Elizabeth the First on 6th of January.

● It is thought that Shakespeare's play took its name from the fact that it was first performed as part of Twelfth Night celebrations about 1601.

● Viola arrives in Illyria after a shipwreck. She loses her twin brother, Sebastian, and she has to disguise as a man (Cesario) to return home. She falls in love with Orsino, but he thinks she is a man. And Lady Olivia, who Orsino loves, falls in love with Cesario (Viola)...

The Globe Theatre● It was first built in 1599.

● It seated up to 3,000 spectators.

● On 29th June 1613, it went up in flames, but it was rebuilt in the following year.

● It was closed down by the Puritans in 1642 and it was pulled down in 1644.

The Globe Today● The new Globe Theatre

was built and reopened in 1997.

● It seats up 1,000 spectators.

● The same materials were used when building the newest Globe to recreate the original atmosphere.
