National Institute of Health, Office of Minority Health; Family and Community Violence Prevention Program: To reduce the incidence of violence-related risky behaviors among students age 7-12. ($3,000,000), 2000-2005 (Co-investigator) 3. National Institute of Alcohol Abuse Alcoholism; Ethnicity, Alcohol and Spousal Violence: To investigate ethnic differences in spousal violence and its relationship to alcohol use in general population. ($30,000), 2001-2002. (Principal Investigator). 4. California Endowment Grant: To pilot a Health Utilization Improvement Model to 5 Head Start Sites and Community Providers. A health service utilization model using education and case management support to empower low income consumers and promote provider awareness of the needs of low income families. May 2003-2005. Unihealth Foundation; South Central Los Angeles Health Care Alliance: To form a Well Child Center for the delivery of health to improve health care access and knowledge for the residents of the Charles R. Drew University service area by establishing an alliance between the Department of Pediatrics of Charles R. Drew University and St. John’s Community Based clinic. Center for Disease Control and Prevention; Routine HIV/STD Counseling/Testing at Emergency Room: To study the outcomes of routinely recommending HIV, Chlamydia, and gonorrhea counseling and testing among emergency room patients. National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism; The prevalence of Alcohol Consumption and the Impact of a Brief Intervention to Reduce Alcohol Use among Inner-city Emergency Room Patients: To investigate the prevalence of alcohol use among emergency room patients at the King/Drew Medical Center, and to determine if a brief intervention can reduce alcohol consumption among at-risk and heavy drinking patients visiting emergency room. ($300,000) 1999-2003 (Principal Investigator). 8. National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism; National Alcohol Screening Day Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral for Treatment: To promote the adoption of Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) among ED clinicians by (1) evaluating the impact on at least 30 ED providers of a structured learning program about SBIRT and (2) assessing the level of adoption of SBIRT by ED practitioners.
