LUNAR ECLIPSE The Earth’s shadow falls on the

moon.

Page 6: Shadows and Eclipses

LUNAR ECLIPSE (CONT.) A TOTAL lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes

through the UMBRA of Earth’s shadow.

A PARTIAL lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes through the PENUMBRA of Earth’s shadow.

What time must it be to see a lunar eclipse? (Daytime or nighttime)

What lunar phase is required for a lunar eclipse?

Has anyone ever seen a lunar eclipse? Why do so many people get to see a lunar eclipse?

SOLAR ECLIPSE The moon’s shadow falls on the earth.

SOLAR ECLIPSE (CONT.) A TOTAL solar eclipse is seen when the observers are

in the UMBRA of the Moon’s shadow.

A PARTIAL solar eclipse is seen when the observers are in the PENUMBRA of the Moon’s shadow.

What time must it be to see a solar eclipse? (Daytime or nighttime)

What lunar phase must there be to see a solar eclipse?

Why do so few people witness a solar eclipse?

ECLIPSE QUESTIONS TO ASK

If a FULL moon is required for a LUNAR eclipse, do we get a lunar eclipse once a month?

If a NEW moon is required for a SOLAR eclipse, do we get a solar eclipse once a month? There are TWO conditions for an eclipse…

The moon must be in the correct PHASE The moon must be in the correct PLANE

Why do so few people see solar eclipses? Are they rare? (look at the size of the Earth… and its shadow and the size of the moon… and its shadow).
