Mattos – Their word is His Bond
Bamidbar 30:2 " ....he may not break his word "
M any of our great Sages were extremely careful to fulfil even the
appearance of a vow or a promise. Rav Yeshua Leib Diskin,
(1817 –1898) the Rav of Brisk and later Yerushalayim once attended a
gathering to eulogize one of his students who had passed away a week
earlier. After the service the chazan said a special prayer for the soul of the
departed, known as “keyl molei rachamaim.”
Afterwards the crowd dispersed. Maharil Dsiskin however summoned the
shamash (attendant) of the synagogue, and gave him a coin. The shamash
wondered why the Rov was giving him the coin.
“We just read that tsedaka will be given on behalf of the community for
the elevation of the soul of the departed, and I wish to insure that the
community will not be remiss in the fulfillment of their obligation.”
