INDULGE THE STUDENT AND EMBOLDEN THE TEACHER LIVING IN YOUR HEADINDULGE THE STUDENT AND EMBOLDEN THE TEACHER LIVING IN YOUR HEADINDULGE THE STUDENT AND EMBOLDEN THE TEACHER LIVING IN YOUR HEADINDULGE THE STUDENT AND EMBOLDEN THE TEACHER LIVING IN YOUR HEAD

Rosh Yeshiva at Yeshiva University, Rabbi Baruch Simon, suggested that the diGerence between a talmid chacham (an advanced student) and a rosh yeshiva (a faculty head) is that the former can point out problems with every answer, while the latter can find answers for every problem. A student might not approach the course material with the same attitude and agenda that a teacher might. Jewish education encourages this relationship. This dynamic is highlighted in the title of Rambam’s philosophical magnum opus, “The Guide for the Perplexed.” To paraphrase a tongue-in-cheek line by a scholar of medieval Jewish philosophy, Dr. Daniel Rynhold: if you’re not perplexed then you don’t need a guide, and if you don’t have any questions then you don’t need any answers.

Learning emerges from this question-and-answer process. This may explain why we begin the Torah reading for the first day of Pesach with the passage that we do (Shemot, 12:21-51). We start with an emphasis on the process of instruction and education, with Moshe’s teaching the laws of Passover. Had we begun from the chapter’s beginning, which recounts Hashem’s direct revelation to Moshe, then the subtext of Pesach as a holiday about education would have been subdued. Instead, we begin with Moshe’s calling upon the ziknei Yisrael (the elders of Israel) to teach Israel what to do (ibid. 21-25) and then, for those who ask, to explain why we do what we do (ibid. 25-27). We share in the nobile task of the ziknei Yisrael: they were students one moment and teachers the next.

The Talmud (Pesachim 116a) remarks that, if one holds a seder alone, then they nonetheless are obliged to ask themselves the Mah Nishtana. At first blush, this might seem like an unfortunate or a silly circumstance, but sometimes I wonder whether making a seder for oneself might be a healthy experience. Chazal were well aware that the relationship between a teacher and her student is not only interpersonal; it is also intra-personal. There are diGerent voices in our heads, and this halacha prompts the awareness that, amid the din of exchanges at the table, we too may question and oGer answers for ourselves. If we strive to indulge our inner student’s curiosity and to embolden our inner teacher’s pedagogy, if we work on a healthy internal educational dynamic, then our external conversations may benefit as well.
