  • TORAH MATTERS:

YOSEF HATZADDIK AND THE SPIRIT OF CHANUKAHYOSEF HATZADDIK AND THE SPIRIT OF CHANUKAHYOSEF HATZADDIK AND THE SPIRIT OF CHANUKAHYOSEF HATZADDIK AND THE SPIRIT OF CHANUKAH

Yosef Hatzaddik, the protagonist of the next few parshiyot, succeeded at everything he did. The Torah describes his mastery in running “Potiphar’s household” (39:2), attending to all of the needs in the Egyptian prison (39:22), and administrating the Egyptian e3ort to store grain during the “seven years of plenty” (41:49). While the Torah clarifies that Hashem intervened to enable Yosef’s success, it is remarkable that one person excelled in so many di3erent areas. What can we learn from Yosef’s prowess?

I believe the key to understanding Yosef’s talent lies in the way Pharaoh describes him. After hearing Yosef’s interpretation of his dreams, Pharaoh exclaims: Is there [another] man around whom the spirit of G-d resides in? (41:38). Pharaoh attributes Yosef’s success to “the spirit of G-d” which resided within him. While according to many commentators (see Radak ibid.), this refers to a certain supernatural vision Yosef possessed, I think we can also identify with this “spirit of G-d.” On our “good days,” we often feel a certain spirit that inspires everything we do. When we can access this “spirit,” we focus more intently, we approach challenges more positively, and we generally experience life wholeheartedly. Our access to this spirit often determines whether we excel in accomplishing the tasks presented to us, or we have to force ourselves to “get through them.” Yosef exuberance and constant awareness of Hashem’s presence in his life allowed his spirit to flow through everything he did.

How do we unleash this spirit? What can we do to prevent physical and emotional fatigue from weighing down on our hearts, and withholding the current of our internal spirit? I believe that one of the goals of Chanukah is to answer this question. Chanukah is a holiday of the spirit. As the Rambam describes: “The mitzvah of [lighting] Chanukah candles is an incredible precious mitzvah.” (Laws of Chanukah Chapter 4) The light of our menorahs, the sounds of our Chanukah music, and the taste of our Chanukah delicacies fill us with joy and reinvigorates our spirit, even in the dark of winter. Rabbi Kalonymus Kalman Shapira z”l, the late Piaseczno Rebbe who was murdered during WWII writes that chinuch, the root of the word Chanukah, describes the e3ort to unleash the fire, which already burns inside our souls. He writes: “Since when a Jewish man is still young the spirit of G-d and soul of the Lord is buried and hidden within him, we need to raise it, to be mechanech it, and cultivate it, and he will be a loyal Jew who serves G-d. He will desire His Torah on his own, and from its path he will not deviate even when he is old.” (Chovat Hatalmidim Chapter 1)

We may have to celebrate Chanukah di3erently this year. However, if we utilize it properly, the beauty and the joy of the holiday can fill our homes and our souls with light during this dark time. May we learn from Yosef Hatzaddik, and allow the precious flame of our Chanukah candles to unleash the spirit of G-d that resides inside each of us.
