It has been an amazing year. As I write this article it marks my first full

year, and it is easily the best synagogue I have ever had the privilege to work for. We have accomplished some amazing things this past year, but this

was only a preview what is to come.

During 5776 my goal is to give Shaarie Torah members the most stimulating and enriching Jewish experience we can offer, while simultaneously attracting and welcoming new members to our community. However, in order to do this I needed to improve our operations. Moving forward with the exciting new work of SULAM and the Board's vision, it is imperative that we have the correct staff in place to ensure that everything is processed, handled and executed in an efficient and organized manner. When one of our members calls requesting an answer about anything, or just wanting to check in, we want you to be able to speak to the correct person that can provide a prompt answer. Our Shaarie Torah staff’s moto and mantra is “how can we help?”

This is why we hired Brian Rohr, Sarah Dishner, Jaclyn Beck and most recently, Kara Gurvey. Brian has significantly helped us with our image both internally and externally. Just look at our presence on Facebook. We had under 400 people last year, and now we have over 500 people following Shaarie Torah. Brian also has increased our open and retention rate for our weekly emails by implementing a far more effective email system, plus look at this amazing newsletter! In late December Sarah joined our team as our bookkeeper and immediately jumped in to assure all your accounts are accurate and up to date! She has implemented procedures to help the preschool families with billing and we will soon launch a new database where you can make your donations online. We are so excited to welcome Jaclyn Beck as our new Membership/Outreach

Melissa's Musings!Melissa Bloom, Executive Director

& Programming Coordinator. Over the last fiscal year, we added 26 new members and we know that her creativity and personality will engage and broaden our community. Kara Gurvey, our newest team member will greet you with a smile. You can see and hear that smile from miles away. (Read more about Kara on page 22)

We have an expert team here at Shaarie Torah that are ready to answer your questions and answer the question of “How can we help?” All the new and current staff have developed individual operating plans for 2015-2016 that consist of the following goals: increasing membership and financial stability, improving customer service and shaping meaningful experiences for everyone!

Having this team in place allows us to focus on the big picture strategy such as crafting and refining a comprehensive marketing, social media, and creative advertising plan, which will vividly share the amazing things happening at Shaarie Torah with the entire Portland Jewish community.

This past year proved to me that this is an amazing community, filled with an eclectic mix of wonderful congregants, outstanding programming and a vibrant young staff with fresh ideas. I witnessed that every one of our congregants has an extreme passion and a deep pride for our synagogue – from Men’s Club to Sisterhood to the Cemetery Committee and our weekly volunteers that assist in the office. Now, we have the team that will continue to guide us on this exciting path, which will simultaneously enhance our profile and bolster our reputation in the Jewish community. Let’s use the next coming year to truly show Portland who we are and what we’re capable of.

Dear Congregants,I have been honored to be elected as your new

President. In reflecting on my first article in the synagogue b u l l e t i n , I w a n t e d t o i n t r o d u c e myself and

my goals for our wonderful Shaarie Torah family.

I have been with Shaarie Torah all my life. In fact my family goes back many years. At present my daughter Melissa, who now serves on the synagogue board, is the fourth generation of my family tree to serve the synagogue in some capacity, she also served as Sisterhood president. While I am bragging about four generations, Stan Rosenfeld, however, now says his son has joined the Shul, which is the fifth generation of the Rosenfeld family to be a part of Shaarie Torah. Thanks Stan!

My goals are simple.

1. Among the most important is to grow the Shaarie Torah family. We need to grow our congregation in order to ensure the future of our sanctuary and our faith. We at Shaarie Torah will not turn any Jewish person away because of costs or personal life styles. A Jewish person will not be turned away from our doors.

2. I also want you, the congregants, to participate in as many of the synagogue events as possible. They include Shabbat dinners, Shabbat music festivals, Torah studies, lectures, etc. Also please attend Shabbat services on Saturdays and Minyans on Sun., Mon, and Thurs. mornings. We at Shaarie Torah want you involved.

3. At the annual meeting I mentioned three items we need to include in our future agenda. They are prayer participation, volunteering and donations. It’s hard to even get a minyan during the week, so having this item on the agenda shouldn’t be a problem. Secondly we need volunteers on committees, Sisterhood, Men’s Club, special events, office assistance, greeters, etc. We at Shaarie Torah want to help you make a difference.

Phil's CornerPhil Cohen, President

"My goals are simple. Among the most important is to grow the Shaarie Torah family. "

The last item is the hardest for me to discuss. However, this is the reality of synagogue life. In the past, a few families have carried the shul to its goals. This is not true in 2015.

We need you, the congregants, to increase your financial participation. One idea

is that if you have a program you are interested in, maybe you can help sponsor that event.

This is my 70th year at Shaarie Torah. I want to know that you

and I can come year after year to pray, congregate and serve Shaarie

Torah.

We now have a great electrifying Rabbi. His enthusiasm, spirit, and faith in the future will guide us for many years to come. Join the Rabbi, staff and board and together we will make Shaarie Torah the best it can be.

The Rabbi, staff and board wish you, my fellow congregants L'Shana Tova. A happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

Phil [email protected]

personal and understand that our lives take on their truest meaning when we see that we are part of a people. Our culture may want us to think in terms of "I, me, my" and demand satisfaction in terms of that narrow perspective. And of course our prayers will take the shape of the boundaries of our lives. But our machzor and our soul know that prayer doesn't end here. We should ask questions during the chagim that move beyond this to "How can I help make a holier community?" "How can I give more to the people around me?" "How can I make sure that the values that matter will live in my community, my world, beyond the scope of my life."

These sound like heavy and difficult questions. They are. But when we ask questions that are this holy, this true, we find a kind of freedom. We unburden ourselves of the narrowness that traps us for so much of our lives and we move beyond. May all of our prayers come from this true and holy place. Channah and I wish you a beautiful 5776.

It is just amazing how time flies! Here we are, another year has gone by and Rosh Hashanah is

again at our doorsteps. As a child, I always liked this time of year. It was the beginning of school; everybody came dressed in their nicest holiday clothing and looked “fresh” and ready to start the New Year.

I remember the excitement in the air and on the street as people were shopping for the holidays. You did not necessarily need to have to go to synagogue in order to appreciate the holidays. However, in the diaspora it is different. Here, outside of Israel, one has to “work” in order to feel the essence of the holiday. What kind of work, you ask? Not a hard and ungrateful one, I assure you! If you have children at home, or not, there are several ways for you to get ready for the holidays and celebrate the holidays, beyond attending the wonderful services that we are planning at Shaarie Torah.

Just like planning and preparing for a trip, one needs to find out where they are going, the price of airfare, the availability on the plane, and the hotel reservation. The High Holy days “trip” is of the soul - a trip of the spiritual journey that is ahead for each of us. It starts with the month of Elul, which is a time for introspection, for reviewing actions of the previous year, and for deciding how to improve for the next year. This is a time that traditionally has been selected to end quarrels and ask forgiveness for unkind remarks. Yes, it is a hard thing to do, but imagine if you do not do it and just arrive for Rosh Hashanah services…you have missed the mark. The month of Elul - this year beginning in mid-August and lasting until mid-September - is a time of great potential and intense preparation leading up to Rosh Hashanah. This is the time to get ourselves ready spiritually and otherwise to connect to the High Holy Days. Come learn from Rabbi Rose, Cantor Vitells, Dorice Horenstein, Jaclyn Beck, Belle Mann and our own Sisterhood, about how to take the first steps to teshuvah - the spiritual 'coming clean'

process in Judaism - in a variety of ways on August 16. Text study, a writing workshop, music, cooking and Jewish yoga. See page 20 for more information.

At home, one way to commence the journey is to create a “Family Mailbox”, a box or compartmentalized letter holder, and encourage each family member to leave personal messages for the others during this month. Just make sure that the letters are of a healing, non-provocative in nature. After a month of reflection and receiving feedback, you are ready for the first Big Day, Rosh Hashanah. Solemn yet joyful, it is the birthday of the world, as well as the Day of Judgment.

Wait, but have you done the three T’s? Teshuva, Tefilah, Tzedaka? Teshuva is so much more than just repentance…have you really regretted with a sense of loss what happened? Are you committed to never doing it again? Have you asked for forgiveness? Have you said what you meant and meant what you said? Have you prayed? Did you choose a Tzedakah organization to donate to? Ok, if you checked them off, you may move on!

Have a festive meal on the eve of Rosh Hashanah. This year it falls on Sunday, September 13th. Enjoy the symbolic foods to welcome the New Year (apples and honey and round challah are two common foods to have). Attend synagogue services; that is a must! This year we will hold family services (now known as Ruach Minyan) ONLY on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, Monday September 14. On Tuesday, we will have Mishpacha Service - a new Preschool Family Services for the High Holy Days.

There are many more new events we are starting, like Shirat Yeladim, a new program for Preschool families, fabulous adult education classes, Koach Program for adults to give them the strength to learn Hebrew and have their B'nai Mitzvah and so much more - make sure you read all that we have in this fantastic bulletin as well as our weekly emails. It was made with you in mind.

The women of Shaarie Torah are now organized in three groups – all three are part of Sisterhood. All are welcome to participate in any or all of the

programs. The division called Sisterhood will continue to sponsor its traditional Hamentaschen Project, Latke baking, Gift Shop, and other programs in support of Congregation Shaarie Torah. We are planning some new programs this year which we hope will encourage participation by women of all ages at Shaarie Torah.

Keep an eye on the bulletins and weekly emails for details.

The women’s programming that, in the past, fell solely under the Education Department

– including the book reviews and the Rosh Chodesh programs will now be part of Ahava, a division of Sisterhood for younger members and others interested in participating in our programming. The Rosh Chodesh programs will be called “Ahava Sundays” and the book reviews will be titled “Ahava Reads”. This division has six programs scheduled for the coming year. See below.

The Yala women’s programs, which have focused on outreach, will be a division of Sisterhood and will still

be called Yala. This division and Sisterhood wants to see and support a variety of women’s programming at Shaarie Torah. Some of the programs of Yala will be geared towards younger women but all women are welcome at all programs. Yala is planning events for the coming year and will be publishing them soon.

All women are encouraged to participate in any of the programs of any of the divisions that they are interested in. If you would like to get involved in planning or helping with programs, please contact me for general Sisterhood programs, Dorice Hornstein for Ahava programs, or Channah Rose for Yala programs.

Remember the Diane Nemer Sisterhood Gift Shop when you are shopping for gifts to take with you on your travels or for those special visiting guests. We have a variety of Judaica (and some non-Judaica) merchandise as well as jewelry, cards and host gifts. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, we can order it for you from our specialty catalogs. All proceeds go directly back to Shaarie Torah’s Education Fund for child and adult education. May and June were busy months for the Men’s Club as far as involvement with synagogue activities. On June 7, 2015 the Men’s Club

presented the Harry R. Nemer Service Award to Steve and Esther Carver for their dedicated service to our

congregation over the years. The evening drew a crowd of over 100 people who all enjoyed a salmon dinner prepared by Men’s Club members. We also want to thank members of the Sisterhood for their help with making the award dinner a

success. This event would not have been possible without the table sponsors and donors - a special thank you goes out to them for their generous support. At this year’s Congregation Shaarie Torah annual meeting, the Men’s Club sponsored the evening meal. This was one of the best attended annual meetings in several years and the Men’s Club agreed sponsor this annually.

Upcoming events involving the Men’s Club include a sponsored Kiddush, High Holy Day ushering duties and the annual erecting of the Sukkah, to name a few. The next meeting of the Men’s Club is scheduled for Sunday, August 23. This meeting is very important because along with event planning for the coming year we will elect the next recipient for the Harry R. Nemer Service award. The meeting will start right after the 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning minyan. Please make every effort to help make the minyan and attend the meeting.

The Men’s Club is recognized as a religious, social and service auxiliary organization of our congregation, filling a vital role in synagogue life. Please get involved and bring a friend. Synagogue membership is not required to join the Men’s Club. For more information regarding the Men’s Club please contact the synagogue office and I will personally contact you on the club’s behalf.

Steph KotkinsMen’s Club President

In the June/July bulletin, our committee made the congregation aware of several changes and improvements that have been made to enhance the

beauty of the cemetery grounds. The project has taken close to three years to complete.

At the Shaarie Torah annual meeting, many of our fellow congregants spoke out about how beautiful the cemetery grounds have become and complimented the committee on their work and efforts. For those of us serving on the committee it was heartwarming to hear appreciation for our volunteer efforts.

The centerpiece of the cemetery grounds is under construction and the anticipated completion will be mid-August. We want to

thank the Nepom Family for its generosity to fund the project in honor of their grandparents.

There will be a formal dedication of the circle. The date is yet to be determined. We hope the extended Nepom Family, who live in various parts of our country, Israel and Switzerland will be able to attend the dedication ceremony.

Recently, you received a letter regarding the continued need for monetary support to Shaarie Torah's general operation and care of the cemetery grounds.

The response has been gratifying and we thank you for your support. If you haven't made a donation to our cemetery recently, please consider a donation for perpetual care. We would truly appreciate the support.

The current Cemetery Policy approved by the Board of Directors June 30, 2014 is that all graves will be of sod with colorful plants in the cemetery common areas. Our cemetery staff maintains this as part of perpetual care. This project, which is currently a work in progress, replaces bushes and shrubs on graves prior to June 30, 2014. New sod is being placed as needed, in the coming year. If you have any questions regarding our cemetery, please call the office and a member of the Cemetery Committee will contact you.

Warm regards,Steph Kotkins Cemetery Committee Chairperson

By now you’re familiar with the SULAM for Strategic Planning project being undertaken by Shaarie Torah. To date, the Core Committee has been

working diligently on next steps and look to meet our Phase I commitment to the USCJ with flying colors!

We’d like to give a big THANK YOU to those who completed our Congregational Survey. We were able to collect a strong amount of benchmark data which is essential for moving forward.

But in the spirit of Shaarie Torah, its not all about numbers, its also about talking face-to-face and we want to hear your voices as well. From here, we have plans to conduct interviews with all Shul committees, individual and small focus groups and related discussions. In the coming

months you may be asked to join a short 4-5 month Task Force based on topical issues that arise from the survey and our discussions. Please be on the look-out for requests to participate.

If you have additional questions or would like to participate further, please call the office to be directed accordingly.

With full Board support, the SULAM for Strategic Planning committee couldn’t be more excited to start the New Year off with such high level of collaboration

and commitment to Shaarie Torah’s vision. We wish you and your family a Shana Tova!

Shalom CST Community,In case we have not personally met, I wanted

to introduce myself to you. My name is Jaclyn Beck and I am the Membership/Outreach and Program Coordinator at Shaarie Torah.

I want to get your attention about a specific program we are launching that is aimed at bringing congregants together offsite; in our homes and in our extended communities. It is called the “House Party Series,” through which members of our community are encouraged to invite other members in OUR neighborhoods

into OUR homes. The House Party Series, which will take the form of a Shabbat dinner, Havdallah Service, weeknight gatherings, amongst a host of a wide expanse of varied formations in which we come together, hopes to share the glories of what this community has to offer. One person at a time.

If you’d like to host a House Party in your zip code, please contact me at: [email protected] or call the office at 503-226-6131 ext. 241.

I sincerely look forward to working with you in growing this community.

generouS ContributionS to our Congregation Cont.

Thank you to the Men's Club and everyone who made donations in honor of the Nemer Award Dinner recipients, Esther and Steve Carver. The names of those donors were

listed as part of the program given out the evening of the event.

Shaarie Torah ChesedYou can help send a message of love and support to those in our community on our

Misheberach list. Each Shabbat morning, look for a table outside the sanctuary with cards

addressed to those in need of healing. Take one home, add your own handwritten message of support, then mail it out on

Monday morning.

Want to do more? Join our team of people who reach out to members of our community in times of joy and in times of sadness. Make a birthday

phone call - bring a meal to someone in need - help to welcome a new baby - deliver a shabbat basket - help make our shul even more hamish! For more

information, contact Annette Demsey

The Svetlana Chudnovskaya Youth Travel Fund

We are honored and proud to announce the Svetlana Chudnovskaya Youth Travel Fund at Congregation Shaarie Torah. This fund is in honor and memory of Zeylik Chudnovsky’s daughter Svetlana who passed away August 11, 2014.

Svetlana arrived in the United States in 2000 and was a member with her father. In 2007 she went to the Ukraine for the unveiling for her mother Zinaida's headstone. During that time she had a stroke and was not able to come back to the US. Unfortunately she suffered for the next seven years before her passing.

In her memory the Svetlana Chudnovskaya Youth Travel Fund has been established to help provide middle and high school youth in need scholarships to USY conventions. It is the families’ desire through this effort that youth will meet other teens from all over the region and continue to strengthen their Jewish identity. More information about the applying for the scholarship will be announced in October.
