fi leyThis is the family favourite - with its fi ve miles of sandy beach protected by Filey Brigg, a bird watchers haven, it is quietly unspoilt. Car ParkingThere are ample car parking spaces and off-street car parks in Scarborough, Whitby and Filey. In Scarborough town centre a pay and display scheme is in operation and beyond the chargeable areas, free disc parking is available for a limited period. Discs are obtainable from Tourist Information Centres, Council Offi ces, most shops and garages. Overnight visitors are advised to contact their accommodation provider for information regarding parking facilities and restrictions.

Park & RideScarborough offers a daily, continuous Park & Ride service throughout the year. Buses run between 7am–7pm every 12 minutes from Osgodby and Seamer Road to the Sea Front and Town Centre. Car

parking is free with a nominal charge for the bus service.

People With DisabilitiesThe Disablement Action Scheme helps people with limited mobility to make the most of their holiday by providing advice on where to eat, where to go and wheelchair loan. ShopmobilityShopmobility provides the hire of powered scooters and manual wheelchairs to people whose mobility is restricted by permanent or temporary disablement, age, accident or illness. Subject to availability, we may also be able to provide you with a companion while you’re out and about.Anyone who has diffi culty in walking – young or old – can hire a mobility vehicle. how to fi nd usBy RailNorthern Rail, Virgin and Transpennine Express run services to York and Leeds from most parts of the country, and from both stations there are regular connections to Scarborough and Filey. The Esk Valley route to Whitby operates from Middlesbrough, whilst the Wolds Coast Line runs from Hull to Filey and Scarborough. Information Line0845 7484950.

By BusThere are a number of bus operators providing services to and around the coastal towns and villages, including National Express, Arriva, East Yorkshire and Coastliner. For further information contact01723 383637.

By RoadThe main route to the Yorkshire Coast is the A64, which can be easily accessed from the M1, A1, A19, M18 and M62.

By AirThe nearest airports are Leeds/Bradford (70 miles), Teesside (59 miles) and Humberside (56 miles), with Manchester and Newcastle only 127 and 100 miles away respectively.

Special events such as Whitby Regatta and Whitby Folk Week bring scores of visitors to the town each year as it celebrates its history and heritage. Eden Camp POW attraction near Malton, the English Heritage Sites ofWhitby Abbey and Scarborough Castle, Scarborough Museums and Art Gallery and Whitby’s Captain Cook Memorial Museum, Scarborough’s

Playdale Farm Park at Cayton and Filey’s Museum of local history – all help provide the background for the experiences that have shaped the world

Yorkshire Pudding- a savoury batter dish whichwhen served with roast beefand vegetables, forms a key

Yorkshire Curd Tart- a curd tart recipe with

Parkin- a sweet ginger cake which

contains oatmeal and treacle.

Wensleydale- a cheese associated with

Wensleydale area and ofteneaten as an accompaniment to

sweet food.

Ginger Beer- flavoured with ginger, this

beverage came from Yorkshirein the 1700s.

Liquorice- created by George Dunhillfrom Pontefract, who in the

1760s thought to mix theliquorice plant with sugar.
