Scholar In Residence—Shabbat April 13-14 Dr. Elana Stein Hain is Scholar in Residence and Director of Faculty at the Shalom Hartman Instute of North America. Prior to her work at Hartman, she served as clergy at both the Jewish Center and Lincoln Square Synagogue, both in Manhaan. Elana completed her doctorate at Columbia University in Religion with a dissertaon on the topic of Rabbinic Legal Loopholes. She is a graduate of the GPATS program and the Cardozo Interdisciplinary Fellowship, both at Yeshiva University. She lives with her spouse and children on the Upper West Side of Manhaan and loves teaching, learning and people. Ongoing Weekday Classes: Daf Yomi with Rabbi Yaakov Nagel. Daf Yomi is a daily regimen of Talmud

study. The entire Talmud is completed, one day at a time, in seven and a half years. Tens of thousands of Jews worldwide study in the Daf Yomi program. The class will take place in the Library 45 minutes before Mincha, Sunday through Thursday. There will be No Class from 3/26 through 4/8.

Mondays 11:15 am-1:15 pm: Women’s only Israeli Dancing—Beginner thru advanced telling the story of the Jewish People and Israel today thru Dance. Cost $6/session. Contact Rachel Weissblatt for details 713-776-9739.

Mondays 8:00 pm: 3 Mini Courses On Classic Torah Topics with Rabbi Barry Gelman. Current Topic “ Amazing Aggadah: An in depth study of some of the non legal sections of the Talmud.

Wednesdays 11:45 am (class 12:00 pm-12:30 pm): with Rabbi Gelman Lunch & Learn: Parshat Hashavua: A textual analysis of the weekly Torah portion. Class will be held in the UOS library, cost $6 (egg salad, tuna salad, fresh green salad and a drink) RSVP to [email protected] or online at www.uosh.org.

Wednesday 8:00 pm at the home of Vivian and Henry Blum. Rabbi Moshe Traxler teaching the Rambam's Mishneh Torah.

Daily minyan is a fundamental aspect of synagogue life. Help to assure that we have a minyan each time by joining the minyan WhatsApp group. Those in the group receive periodic reminders of minyan times as well as requests to come when we are short. Come when you can. Join the group to make sure those saying kaddish and others have a minyan. Email or text your cell # to Rabbi Gelman if you wish to join and download the WhatsApp app.

UOS TIKKUN OLAM INITIATIVE

Tuesday, May 8th, 5:30 – 7 pm

UOS is now part of SEARCH’s Council of Congregations, joining 5 other Houston synagogues as partners in SEARCH’s mission to provide hope, create opportunity, and transform the lives of men, women and children who are trying to break free from the cycle of poverty and homelessness. On Tuesday May 8th we will prepare, deliver, serve and share a dinner with clients in SEARCH’s new “Coming Home” program. This program, described as “building community for hope, healing and restoration” pro-vides “a bridge to functioning in the community for the most vulnerable among us”. To participate in this mitzvah, please contact [email protected] or [email protected]. For food preparation – Sunday May 6th at UOS, adults and teens are welcome to participate. For the dinner – Tuesday May 8th - adults only please.

Thanks to the generosity of the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston, need based camp scholarships are available for Jewish children who were affected by Harvey and make it possible for more children to experience the magic of summer camp. There are two types available. DAY CAMP GRANTS are meant to assist Jewish families who endured a significant financial loss due to the storm. Each family who submits an application and qualifies for a Hurricane Harvey day camp grant will receive 30% off their weekly camp costs.
