SAFER SPEED REVIEW Consultation We want to make your roads safer for everyone who uses them. On some roads we’re doing this with safety improvements, but on SH90 at the southern entrance to Tapanui the best thing we can do to prevent people from dying or being seriously injured is reduce speed limits to make them safe and right for the road. Speed increases both the likelihood of crashes and their severity. A small speed reduction can make a big difference, especially when cyclists or pedestrians are involved. Most crashes are caused by a number of factors, but even when it’s not the cause of a crash, speed is most likely to determine whether anyone is killed, injured, or walks away unharmed. Formal consultation on the new speed limit proposals is required under the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits (2017). Before we make a decision, we want to hear from you. 200m extension of50km/h zone Housing development

To GORE

WHAT WE’VE HEARD We’ve talked to the community, council and others and they want the existing 100km/h speed limit on this road reduced to 50km/h. People said 100km/h is too fast and didn’t feel safe, for an area with more businesses and a new residential development.

WHAT WE KNOWThe existing 100km/h speed limit on this road doesn’t give highway traffic time to slow down before entering an area where there’s a residential development and businesses. Highway traffic speeds are an issue for these business owners and those living along this section of highway. They also pose a safety risk for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers trying to access the highway from entrance ways
