LEGACY NEWSLETTER

From the President Unbelievably, half of 2014 has disappeared and become the past. All too quickly the future is upon us. What does this mean for SGES? Our Board must begin strategic planning for the next fifty years. It will be a monumental task when you consider the future and the sheer explosion of knowledge over the last fifty years. Will genealogy reach a new frontier? The answer is yes.

I call upon you to think about the frontier of our library. While the SGES collection has grown substantially and will continue to grow, our building will not. Will we be in the same location in fifty years? The answer is plainly no. We must plan for the future of our collection - both its form and format. New methods of storage offer options like digitization and e-books accessible from anywhere. The next horizon is yet beyond us, but it is time to begin discussion.

Our program in July will address DNA. Have you heard about the advances in DNA so that your DNA can now pinpoint your ancestral homeland down to the country rather than just the continent?

Recently, Ancestry announced a focus on the future with DNA. Ancestry discontinued their Y-DNA and mtDNA tests to focus entirely on the autosomal Ancestry DNA. This was a decision to look over the horizon. If you want to view their article, you can access it at http://blogs.ancestry.com/ancestry/2014/06/12/comments-on-y-dna-and-mtdna-tests

As my personal imagination spins, I envision attaching DNA results to our vital records. I can imagine at the birth of a child, DNA of that child is taken and placed on the birth certificate. To coincide, DNA not taken at birth would be taken at death and attached to the death certificate. DNA is already placed on file in the CODIS system if you are connected with the government, military or the law. In time, that might lead to attaching DNA to all names on census records of the future. Of course, privacy still remains to be addressed. However, I received notice today from our insurance company that in order to serve us better, they were establishing a Health Care Provider share of our information. I didn’t see an opt-out clause so maybe our insurance company gets the first swipe at our DNA to decide our coverage based on our genetic history! Our DNA of the future will perhaps pinpoint particular locations: not just the world continents, but individual villages and townships, right down to the location of the actual ancestral homestead and local cemeteries. Imagine attaching DNA to individual surnames. Perhaps a follow through with DNA on our most used records- census records of the future. It is imaginable and therefore it is conceivable for the brilliant, scientific minds of today.

All of that was said to re-state the SGES Board has a task before them in Strategic Planning. We need to imagine an unknown frontier. Do you have a vision for the future? Are you a forward thinker? Your help is more than welcome. We need volunteers and we need thinkers. Step up and volunteer to help with planning and let your imagination ride the waves of the future of SGES. Contact : [email protected] to participate in the organization of SGES in any area.

Yours for growing trees,

Elizabeth “Betty” Poag Reed President, SGES

Memorial for Donald H. DuClose

Our Parliamentarian, Don DuClose, died July 2, 2014. He was the husband of Liz DuClose, our Editor. Don was born on September 28, 1943 in Oak Park, Illinois. His parents were Donald Edward DuClose and Thelma Lillian Johnson. His father worked for the railroad which split his location between Chicago and Jacksonville, causing young Don to attend two different schools each year until they moved to Jacksonville in 1955. His interest included photography, nature, biology, marine science. He graduated from Alfred I. Dupont High School and received a BS Degree from Jacksonville University.

We shall miss his quick smile and his sense of humor.

Scout Troop Adopts Parsons Cemetery Kevin Demarest is a Scout Leader and the father of Jacob, who needed a project for his Eagle Scout Badge. Kevin asked if we could suggest a suitable project. Of course we could! The small Parsons Cemetery had become overgrown since the last caretaker had to give it up. It needed more than just a gentle mowing. Jacob accepted the challenge and recruited three fellow scouts: Hugh Hackney, Holden Hackney and Richard Cooper, to team up with him.

Not only did they accomplish a lot, they were so happy with the results that the troop has adopted the cemetery maintenance as a community project and plan to keep it in good shape.

SGES salutes Troop 475 at Ft. Caroline Methodist, a thoughtful leader and a willing project manager!
