And then there were four (or three in Division 3)... It was a competitive display of football last weekend across all competitions. The conditions, particularly on Saturday made for a greater number of stoppages than normal, however the contest was extremely enjoyable.

Congratulations to Black Rock who have advanced straight to the Division 3 Senior Grand Final, Endeavour Hills who have advanced straight to the Division 3 Reserve Grand Final and Skye who have advanced straight to the Thirds-Red Grand Final.

Well done to Black Rock President Nick McMillan, Coach John Burke and the committee on already reaching the Division 3 Senior Grand Final. This has been a work in progress over the last three years for the Black Rock Football Club and we know how hard they have worked to get this far.

Unfortunately for St Pauls that is the year over but another fantastic effort to reach the final five in Division 1 and we know they will be back, bigger and better in 2016. In Division 2, Skye are out of the Senior premiership race and although disappointing, they have some exciting years ahead

with Under 19s coming through and plenty of success in the Reserve and Thirds levels.

I think everyone would agree our finals manager clubs are doing a wonderful job in hosting the 2015 SFNL SAS Security Finals Series. We cannot begin to thank all the volunteers enough for the wonderful job they do in running a great day at community footy. All these helpers are arriving at 7:30am and are working consistently until about 5:00pm. Thank you!!

As we progress further into the finals series, the tension and pressure rises for all those invested in the game. I encourage everyone to remember to conduct themselves in a way that is acceptable. Poor language, personal insults or an aggressive demeanour is not acceptable and will not be tolerated. Police and Security will be keeping a close watch on all behaviour in the remaining weeks and if fans cannot support in the appropriate manner, they will be asked to the leave the venue.

There are some exciting matchups given the home and away season results and I cannot wait to see this weekend’s matches!

I wish all teams the very best of luck this weekend.

PLAYERS OF THE ROUND

THE BLK PLAYER OF THE ROUND WILL RECEIVE A BLK PACK.

Alex Moloney – Murrumbeena FC Early on in their Qualifying Final clash, Keysborough enjoyed a handy advantage and seemed to have Murrumbeena on the ropes. Enter Alex Moloney, who almost-single handily kept his side in the contest. Lurking in the forward pocket, the goalsneak booted his team’s first three goals and sparked Beena into action. He finished with four majors and looked dangerous whenever the ball was in his vicinity. Congratulations Alex.

Sam Anstey – Mordialloc FC A quality footballer, the Mordialloc coach showed no signs of the hamstring injury that kept him sidelined for the previous few weeks and claims this award for the second time in 2015. Anstey found plenty of the footy, particularly around the stoppages, and stood out with his exquisite ball use. His booming right boot sent the Bloods into attack time and again and was instrumental in his side’s upset Elimination Final win over the Doggies.Congratulations Sam.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE

DIVISION 1: FRONT & CENTRE / WILL HUNTEREast Brighton has booked itself a date with minor premier Dingley next week after a gutsy 23-point victory over East Malvern in Saturday’s Qualifying Final.

Intermittent drizzle made conditions at Springvale Reserve slippery and ensured a hard-fought, physical contest between the two sides. East Brighton certainly missed star playmaker Damien Rayson, who withdrew due to work commitments, and they didn’t play their best footy.

Nevertheless they were more polished by hand and foot when it mattered and led from go to woah.

Their opening term in particular was terrific. Five goals to one gave the reigning premiers a comfortable lead, with Phil Smith especially prominent early. The Big Show not only impacted the scoreboard (he finished with the match with three goals), but his ability to bring the ball to ground from the marking contests brought the crumbing players into the game.

By halftime their lead was 20 points and looked certain to be extended.

But the Vampires then switched into cruise control in the second half, which allowed the Panthers to bang on a couple of quick goals and get back within a kick halfway through the third term. East Malvern’s spread and ball movement were good, while their physical pressure was also outstanding.

However, the Vampires responded to the challenge, and finished the term with three straight goals to blow East Malvern away.

They held the at-times sloppy Panthers at arm’s length in the final term to claim victory, with skipper Ben Douthie and seasoned campaigners Damien Lynch and Toby Mahoney (three majors) among the best performed Vampires.

East Malvern ruckman Matt Terech was again superb, and he received ample support from Liam Voight, Benji Neal and Jesse Finnen.

On Sunday Mordialloc produced a turn-up for the books, defeating the in-form St Pauls in their Elimination Final by 15 points.

The win was made all the more impressive given the Bloods were a man down for much of the game, with speedy onballer Carey Neville injuring his shoulder early in the opening stanza and taking no further part in the match.

Despite this setback, Mordialloc played the better footy for much of the first half. Their dominance around the stoppages was first-class, with their halfbacks pushing up the ground to be the extra numbers at the contest.

Although St Pauls showed brief glimpses of its best footy with its quick ball movement down the wing, these moments were few and far between.

Both sides were deadlocked 3.4 apiece at the half, and the feeling was that Mordialloc simply didn’t get the scoreboard reward for their efforts.

That changed in the opening part of the second half as Mordialloc put through three consecutive goals to skip away to a handy buffer. However, just as the Bloods looked the goods, they let the Dogs off the leash, and they nailed three of their own to reduce the margin to three points by the final change.

That was as close a St Pauls got. With influential Dogs Brendan Dawes and Liam Wilson well muzzled after half time, the Bloods got on top in the midfield as Sam Anstey, Todd Bastion and David Marguglio won plenty of the ball.

And when Luke Barnhoorn nailed the Bloods’ third straight goal 15 minutes in, it ensured there was no way back for the Doggies.

Mordialloc’s onballers were tremendous, but defender Josh Jewell won plenty of fans with his blanket job on Travis Ridgeway, while up

forward James Pennycuick made the most of his opportunities.

For St Pauls, ruckmen Nick Halliday and Ryan Kitchin where among the contributors and Keiran Knox and Trent McIntyre were serviceable in defence.

With the first week of SFNL finals has now done and dusted, the stakes get higher in this weekend’s Semi Finals. For one team a spot in the big dance awaits while for another it’s curtains on their 2015 campaign.

Second Semi Final – Saturday 5th September

Dingley vs East Brighton (Springvale Reserve) The stage is set for biggest game of the year to date. With the two best-performed sides in the competition set to do battle once more, this may well be a preview of the Division 1 Grand Final in a fortnight’s time.

And there will be plenty of motivation for these two teams as the winner will be gifted a week off before a berth in the premiership decider.

Recent history is on the Dingoes side, as they have won four of their last six encounters with the Vampires by an average of 43 points. But tellingly, both of East Brighton’s victories have come in September, which shows they have a game style that holds up in finals.

The addition of Rayson this week will greatly bolster the Vampires’ array of quality midfielders, including Dan Reid, David De Luca and Sam Dillon, but giant ruckman Hamish Dahl again looms as the key. If he can give his mids first use of the pill, they could be hard to stop. And given the Vampires love to create stoppages, he will be given every opportunity to do so.

But the Dingoes will cause heaps of problems if they are allowed to get clean ball use on the outside. Dan Farmer, Luke Bartholomew, Marcus Freeman and Dan Bolger can all turn a game and know where the goals are, so if they are let loose they can cause real damage.

This will be a terrific contest, but the Dingoes simply have too much firepower around the ground and, after being refreshed from their week off, should prevail in a thriller.

First Semi Final – Sunday 6th September

East Malvern vs Mordialloc (Springvale Reserve) There are no second chances in this cut-throat Semi Final. The winner will go on to play either Dingley or East Brighton in a Preliminary Final while it’s Mad Monday for the loser.

The Panthers started the year in the perfect fashion, and looked one of the sides to beat early. Long-term injuries to key players hurt their momentum, but nevertheless they remain in the hunt.

Mordialloc meanwhile have been a surprise packet, and their meteoric rise from Division 2 has been the feel-good story of the year. But they certainly won’t be resting on their laurels after last week’s upset victory.

Although the loss of Neville (AC joint) is a blow, they still bat deep in their midfield with the likes of Anstey, Bastion, Marguglio, Nathan Evans and Josh Kovarik, and the size and shape of Springvale Reserve, which is similar to their home at Ben Kavanagh Reserve, will suit them perfectly.

But to extend their season beyond this week they need to stop the influence of Matt Terech, who has emerged as one of the most dominant ruckman in the competition. With the big fella palming it down to the throats of Ryan Fitzgerald, Isaac McCrimmon and Jessie Finnen, East Malvern will be hard to contain, particularly with League leading goal kicker Mark Ryan lurking inside the 50.

They were at times their own worst enemy with their ball use last week, but overall their form in the last few weeks suggests they’ll be hard to beat.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE

DIVISION 1: CLUB NOTESDIVISION 1: CLUB NOTESMORDIALLOC The most dangerous Mordialloc side is one with its back against the wall. Just when it looks as though the wagon is running out of petrol, it somehow manages to summon a bit of extra energy to keep it rolling along. This is what happened at Springvale last Sunday, and must be the theme for this coming week and, hopefully, beyond.

Before this though, the seconds took on St Kilda City in a qualifying final on Saturday. We had beaten the Saints two weeks beforehand, and obviously they did not like that very much. From the opening bounce St Kilda City were desperate and eager to get first hands on the ball, and the Mordialloc boys struggled to respond. A nasty collision three minutes in cost us the services of Josh Kovarik for twenty minutes, and things got no better from there. St Kilda were in front at every change, and whilst we kicked the first two goals of the last quarter to cut the margin to four goals and give us a flicker of hope, that’s where the charge ended. So, only five goals for the match. Big Ashwin kicked four of those in a virtuoso performance up forward. Robbie Evans, Tony Demacedo and Nick Hoban

were amongst our best on not one of our better days. This, however, is not reflective of the way that this side has been playing over the last month, and we remain quietly confident of bouncing back next Sunday.

The firsts had one of the best wins in the recent history of our Club, defeating St Pauls in an arm wrestle on Sunday. Finals matches are often won by the side that settles the quickest, and the opening two goals of the match helped our boys get into the game. St Pauls, however, are a formidable foe, and they kicked the next three before a James Morris major sent us into half time all square. Three goals in five minutes gave us the advantage half way through the third term, but this lead was cancelled by three St Pauls goals that gave them the momentum at the last change. The first goal of the last term was always going to be crucial, and James Pennycuick kicked that and quickly followed up with another. Luke Barnhoorn added a third for the quarter to ease Mordialloc nerves, and this time there would be no coming back. When the contest became willing in the last ten minutes, the Mordialloc boys put their noses over the ball, and outlasted a gallant opponent to win by fifteen

points. Josh Jewell, Dave Marguglio and Andrew Fyans were among the best, but there were no passengers on this day.

So we move on to next weekend, with both sides playing on Sunday in first semi-finals. The seconds start at mid-day against local rivals Cheltenham, while the bounce in the firsts is at 2.15 against East Malvern. So if you are in any way supportive of Mordialloc, please put on your Sunday best red & white apparel and get down to Springvale Reserve, for we need your voices in support!!!

DINGLEY A dominant win by the Thirds in their qualifier completed the set of four teams gunning for the chance this weekend to secure the direct passage into the Grand Final. Unfortunately a timetable clash between the Thirds (at Cheltenham) and the U19s on Saturday morning will preclude the diehards from taking in all the matches, on a day the long-range forecasters have predicted to be dry and mostly sunny. There will be a trepidation-laden sense of deja vu for the seniors as they face up to the Vampires again at Newcomen Road, mindful of the way they ambushed us in the final series last year. However, with up to as many

as seven new faces, it is a bigger and stronger Dingley side ready to make atonement. The Reserves will start lukewarm favourites, while the U19s face arguably the hardest task against a City side that seemed to undergo a remarkable transformation mid season. Matt will have his boys absolutely pumped for this, and expectations are they’ll be supported by a bumper, Dingo-dominated crowd.

It would be remiss of me not to mention here the achievements of Josh Keyt, Madison Talarico and Leroy Moore in winning the goalkicking awards in their respective competitions.

ST KILDA CITY Three fantastic wins in week one of the finals. A long way to go, but a great start to September.

EAST BRIGHTON It’s not that far away from Monash Medical Centre as the crow flies, but for Steve Hill who hasn’t missed an East Brighton game of football since roughly 1948, the Qualifying Final against East Malvern may as well have been played in Timbucktoo. Unfortunately Hilly took ill on Thursday, was forced to lie low and missed out on watching our boys get home by 23 points out at Springvale.

It was never going to be a walk in the park for either side after 2 very hard fought Home & Away games throughout the season. A five goal first term inspired by a raging Phil Smith wasn’t enough to put too many smiles on faces by half time and it was obvious the Panthers weren’t going away anytime soon.

The breeze didn’t play much of a role in either side’s performance and it

was the usual suspects that ignited the fire when it was time to get down to business - Mark Jamieson chipping in with 3 goals, one of which was kicked from virtually the half forward flank after a blinder of a mark at full stretch - Captain (& favourite of all the Junior’s Mums at the Club) Ben Douthie, belted by opponents all day kicked the goal of the day in the last quarter, a 55m across the body screw-ball - Damian Lynch was literally a pain in the backside for the East Malvern attack all day and Toby Mahoney presented time and time again despite not kicking any majors.

Water under the bridge for the time being however, as Ben Murphy and his coaching crew now have Dingley to prepare for with the 2nd Semi Final this week. If you see any Wild Horses in the McKinnon area on Saturday, rest assured they won’t stand a chance of keeping Hilly away from this game.

Social Notes Thursday Nights - all Members & Sponsors invited to watch training and enjoy ‘Happy Hour’ priced drinks and a snag off the BBQ - get dowen and help create a bubbling atmosphere to cheer our boys on to get us into our 5th consecutive Grand Final.

Looking for volunteers to assist with the Club Room pack up the day after the AFL Grand Final (Sunday October 4th - 9.30am onwards)

There was upset after upset in the first round of Southern footy finals and two games of exciting football brought about a lot of highlights.

Four first half goals from Alex Moloney lifted Murrumbeena to an upset 10.6 (66) to 9.4 (58) win against Keysborough in the Qualifying Final at Jack Barker Oval on Saturday. The Beena trailed by 17 points at quarter time after the Burra started strongly in the opening term, kicking four goals while Murrumbeena could only manage one.

Moloney single-handedly kicked Murrumbeena back into the game with three second quarter goals to bring his tally to four as the Beena’s defensive press halted Keysborough’s drive going forward.

Despite the efforts of Daniel Morland and coach Ryan Goodes, the Burra struggled to find a target forward with key forward Davor Rajic well held by the likes of Kane Downing. Although the momentum was going the way of Murrumbeena, Keysborough held a three-point advantage at half time.

Murrumbeena surged ahead early in the third term as its midfield began to control the clearances. Captain Mitch Walder and Dylan Elkman were stunning in the middle, driving the ball forward while Tom Valenta played an important role linking up off half back.

Rajic kicked his second goal of the day to help Keysborough close the gap but it would be the Beena who held a narrow one-point lead going into the final term.

With the game on the line, both sides lifted their intensity but again it would be Murrumbeena which had the momentum. Chris Cairns looked dangerous inside the Beena’s forward 50 while Sam Moloney imposed himself on the game with an impressive performance coming off the wing.

Goodes continued to be the driving force behind Keysborough’s attack going forward but several basic skill errors crept into the Burra’s game which Murrumbeena was able to capitalise on.

In the end Murrumbeena was simply too good on the day and its supporters roared in celebration when the final siren sounded to announce the Beena eight-point victors and set-up a semi-final contest against Oakleigh Districts.

Caulfield has caused another upset in Sunday’s Elimination Final after knocking out Skye 9.15 (69) to 9.8 (62) to set up a Semi Final clash with Keysborough. Glenn Nye and Adam Ballard both put in outstanding performances in the win which saw the Bears come from 13 points down at quarter time to earn a well-deserved victory.

Skye got away to a perfect start after kicking two of the first three goals to take a six-point lead early in the contest. After James Backway cut the margin to a point 13 minutes into the quarter, goals to Ben Walker and Ben Evans helped the Bombers hold a solid 11-point lead at the first change.

Caulfield lifted its intensity in the second quarter and it paid dividends with Sean Gunning and Backway kicking goals to again cut the margin back to a point midway through the term. Jim Martinson capped off an impressive first half performance with his first major to give the Bombers a little breathing heading into half time.

Trailing by six-points, Caulfield came out on top during the third quarter after some slick ball movement in the middle of the ground to set up shots on goal. Jason Twirdy and Jake Buggy both booted majors to put the Bears in front before Walker goaled to keep Skye within striking distance. Gunning’s second goal came at a crucial time with just minutes to play in the quarter to give Caulfield a nine-point advantage heading into the final break.

Skye jumped out of the blocks in the final term with goals to Marc Frizell and Matt Doyle putting the Bombers ahead after only a minute of play. Caulfield withstood the early pressure and steady to hit the front after a goal to Alex Cables before Adam Connell gave the Bears a 13-point advantage with less than 10 minutes remaining.

Two minutes later Walker banged home his third goal and it was game on at Jack Barker Oval. Both sides fought gallantly in the final minutes of the game and both had opportunities to goal but it would be Caulfield that held on for the win.

Second Semi Final – Saturday 5th September

Oakleigh Districts vs Murrumbeena (Jack Barker Oval) Oakleigh Districts will go into this game full of confidence for three reasons. One, it is coming off a week off where the players will have rested their bodies in preparation for their most important game of the year. Two, the Oaks have defeated Murrumbeena twice so far this season and three, Murrumbeena fought tooth and nail to defeat Keysborough and may go into this game battled and bruised.

But by no means will any of those aspects factor into the game plan for Murrumbeena this Saturday and by no stretch of the imagination are they no chance at causing another upset and playing off in a grand final in two weeks’ time.

Murrumbeena has easily been the surprise packet of the year and coach Stevie Wright has his side playing with a lot of heart. The Beena may not be the most skilled side in the competition but they play with plenty of ticker and are the most skilled team defensively in the competition.

But they do have attacking options up forward that can prove to be a handful for opposing defenders. Dean Spanos has had an outstanding season playing as a hybrid midfielder/half forward with 29 goals so far. Spanos struggled to have an impact against the Burra and will be keen to turn the tables around and impose himself on the game early.

Anthony ‘go-go gadget arms’ Ekberg-Weiss has the ability to take contested marks and although his kicking can sometimes be an issue, he is a dangerous weapon that Wright has at his disposal and will need to be well-held if Oakleigh are going to win this game.

For the Oaks, Dave Velardo has been a stud inside the forward 50 with 61 goals this season to lead all goal kickers in division two while livewire forward Khaled Kandakji has been a dangerous commodity and has shown the ability to weave his way through traffic and hurt his opponents on the scoreboard with 39 goals.

Former Collingwood-listed player Luke Casey has been another standout for the Oaks this season and provides an experienced head coming off the half back line and is a general in defence, helping the Oaks become a well-rounded side that has the offensive firepower to blow teams out of the water but also the defensive prowess to restrict sides to low scores.

This will be a ripper of a game and one sure to bring excitement to Jack Barker Oval. Murrumbeena will go into this match as underdogs and will give Oakleigh a run for its money but the Oaks should be too strong.

Oakleigh Districts by 11 points.

First Semi Final – Sunday 6th September

Keysborough vs Caulfield (Jack Barker Oval) Caulfield has been a somewhat topsy-turvy team at times this season but has shown an ability to match it with the best at times throughout the season. Keysborough has struggled to play at its best since the season-ending injuries to Tyson King and Corey Wilkinson but still have enough talent to be a serious premiership contender.

Davor Rajic has stepped into the hole left by King’s injury admirably with 28 goals for the season and will be the focal point for Keysborough inside its forward arc alongside Mat Collett who will need to improve after last week’s performance against Murrumbeena.

Coach Ryan Goodes is an outstanding leader who will again take charge in the midfield alongside Tim Bacic and Bryce Sutton in the ruck. All three players will need to be at their best against the Bears and provide Keysborough with hard running and swift ball movement in transition from defence into attack. Crucial skill errors hurt them last week so they will need to tidy up their disposal or risk giving away cheap goals.

Caulfield were outstanding against Skye in the elimination final and got important contributions from several high-quality players in the win. Adam Ballard was excellent in the ruck for the Bears and will engage in an entertaining duel with Sutton on Saturday.

Midfielders Jason Twirdy and Chris Lewis will be relied upon to provide plenty of drive forward from the stoppages and with the likes of full-forward Adam Connell – who has recovered swiftly from a knee injury to kick 49 goals this year – patrolling inside the forward 50. Connell has proven to be a dangerous forward during his time at Caulfield and a big bag of goals from him will go a long way into Caulfield taking home another upset victory.

The Bears will undoubtedly go into this contest as the underdogs but similar to last week I don’t think it will bother the players too much. They know they have a job to do and they will give it a red hot crack against a Keysborough side who will be eager to prove that they are a side to be reckoned with come finals.

This game should be exciting, tense and entertaining all at the same time and I think Keysborough will get the job done, but not by much.

Keysborough by 14 points.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE

DIVISION 2: CLUB NOTESMURRUMBEENAOn the Field It’s finals time and Murrumbeena had two sides playing last weekend. They travelled down to Cheltenham to take on Keysborough in both games.

On Saturday the Seniors game was, as expected, a tight struggle between two good sides. Keysborough came out strongly and were in front at quarter time. After the first change, the Beena boys started to fight back and by half time they were only a few points down. Early in the third quarter a miracle goal from “Cav” and a good shot from “Eggy” saw the Beena hit the front. After that it became a close struggle and Murrumbeena went into the last change in front by only one point. In the last quarter it was anyone’s game, but gradually the Murrumbeena backs took control, and the forwards scored enough to give them a great fighting win.

Some of our best players in a good team win were, Alex Moloney, Tom Valenta and Mitch Walder.

When you’re hot you’re hot and when you’re not you’re not. Last Sunday the Beena Reserves were not against Keysborough. The first quarter was the Beena’s best but by the end of the quarter the Borough were showing their strength. The next two quarters showed what a big and well-structured unit the Keysborough reserves are. The Beena boys did not give up, but they were outplayed. In the last quarter Murrumbeena threw everything at their opponents but to no avail. Keysborough had a good win. So ended the “Magoo’s” finals campaign. Some of the Murrumbeena better players were, Cam Walker, Andrew Weiss, Quenton Pongracz, Eddie Brown and Jeremy Sissons playing his last game for the Beena. So on to this week with the seniors playing

Oakleigh Districts. Good luck Fellas. Do us proud.

OAKLEIGH DISTRICT

Way back in March this year the U19’s played a their first practice games. While the results were not flattering we were happy to be fielding a side. I guess the thought process at that time was “ if we are competitive and win a couple of games “we would take that and improve along the way as this underage side grows. The thought of playing finals football was not even on the radar but through constant improvement and the will to achieve this group played in their first final last week.

Although beaten (Hampton too good) the boys did the club proud and gave themselves and club a great platform for the future.

Well done Scott and his band of merry men for making the year a pleasing one.

The Two’s found out what finals footy is all about and hopefully learn and improve for this weeks cut throat semi on Sunday.

The Seniors open up their Finals campaign this Saturday ,and with a win, can be the first contestant in the “Big Show”.

KEYSBOROUGH It had been 7 long years but finally finals football was back for the Burra, with mixed results

R & D Roofing Senior Report The boys were keen to atone for their loss at Murrumbeena during the second half of the season and got off to a great start leading 4 goals to 1 at the first break. When Brucey snapped a great goal to kick of the second quarter things were looking good but as the second quarter progressed Murrumbeena came back hard at us and they managed to cut our lead back to 3 points at half time.

The third quarter was another tight struggle with the Beena getting the slight edge and found themselves 1 point up with 1 to play.

Turnovers were killing us and the opposition made us pay throughout the second half and in a low scoring quarter we couldn’t find a way to get the lead back eventually falling by 8 points.

Bomber and the Kid were stand outs for the Burra but need others to get around them next week. Moose, Sutton and Bomber kicked 2 each.

The reason we play 18 rounds is to get the best position on the ladder

and the reward for finishing second is the double chance, so we get to fight another day.

Bendigo Bank Reserves Report. After dropping a few games late in the season the reserves gave up he double chance and went into the finals knowing it was do or die with no second chances. Crowey had a strong squad to choose from and the boys had plenty to play for, both as a team and also players looking to press the selection claims for the seniors.

This was never really a contest with the Burra holding Murrumbeena to 1 goal each quarter while controlling the game from the outset.

The experience of Pribby, Joey and Turbo mixed well with the younger Thomo and Lukey while big Jake had a great game in a new role down back.

Goals were hared around with Fat, Joey, Turbo, Macca and Jono kicking 2 each. Boys will be looking to continue the good form against Oakleigh districts today.

Vigeo Financial Services Thirds Report. The thirds were into their second week of finals after accounting for Black Rock a week earlier. In

3 games this season Sandown took the chocolates but the Burra managed to get a little closer each time so the boys were confident of causing the upset. A great start saw us hold Sandown goalless in the first quarter while kicking 3 ourselves and after holding them to just 1 goal in the second quarter we were 26 points up at half time.

While Sandown picked up their game in the second half our boys were never headed running out 31 point victors.

Jamie has done a great job coaching the boys this season and backed it up on the field with a be on ground performance, backed up by good games from Connell, Mackenzie, Bros, Caisley and Crawf. Damien Whiteoak lead the forwards in a great performance with 4 goals while Jacob Caisley booted 3.

Boys take on Sth Yarra for a spot in the grand final today, an unbelievable achievement considering with a week to go before he season started this team didn’t even exist. Good luck today Burra.

Don’t forget to organise your Presentation night tickets and tables. See facebook for all the details.

DANDENONG VS JAPAN WARRIORSThe Dandenong Redlegs took on the Japan Warriors National Development Squad in an exhibition match under lights at Greaves Reserve last Tuesday night. Although the Redlegs won the match convincingly, the result was irrelevant as it was a terrific night and a great experience for the young Japanese footballers.

DIVISION 3: MAN ON THE MARK / ANDREW PALOCZI @Apaloczi

Second Semi Final (Black Rock vs Mount Waverley) Adrian Lane was superb throughout the day, playing a key role in Black Rock’s seven-goal triumph over Mount Waverley. Lane booted three goals and contributed to several others.

The match was played in heavy conditions, which promised to suit the more committed team. Black Rock was that team for most of the game.

Mount Waverley threatened to take control of proceedings with a strong finish to the first term. The Mountain Lions kicked the last three majors of the quarter, including an impressive snap from Michael Kinsella, and the Jets found themselves seven points down.

Black Rock’s players received praise at the huddle for their attack on the ball, but were urged to use the footy better.

They responded, with Lane booting a goal and contributing to a couple more. After marking, Lane again kicked truly and the Jets led by three goals. A strong mark and goal from Luke Galle helped keep Mount Waverley in touch and the Mountain Lions were only 11 points behind at half time.

Late in the second term the Mountain Lions suffered a major setback, losing versatile tall Drew Macrae, who had to be assisted from the field.

Mount Waverley remained in touch at the final change, trailing by 16 points.

However, in the final term Lane stepped up again for the Jets, marking and booting a goal from close range. Black Rock continued to apply intense pressure around the ground, tackling fiercely and showing desperation to win the ball. This was reflected on the scoreboard and, when the Jets kicked their second goal of the term seven minutes in, the margin blew out to 29 points.

By then, there was little prospect of a Mountain Lions’ comeback, and things worsened shortly after when Jarrod Wilkin received a green card. He had to spend the rest of the match on the bench. The big man’s aggression is often an asset for his side, but his dismissal ended any glimmer of hope for the Mountain Lions.

Lane was a standout for the winner, with Daniel Kick named next best. Everyone contributed for the Jets, and Tom Dalton and veteran Kelly Spratt were among many who impressed.

Black Rock looks in great shape with a week off before playing in a Grand Final that the Jets thoroughly deserve to be in.

The Mountain Lions will need to show plenty of character in the Preliminary Final. It will be a challenge to overcome the mental scars of the final term demolition inflicted on them by the Jets.

First Semi Final (Moorabbin vs Ashwood) Ashwood started as firm favourite against Moorabbin, but the Kangaroos played with desperation and passion from the start and it proved to be a thrilling contest.

After Ricky O’Brien goaled for the Magpies in the final term, they trailed the Kangaroos by five points. With only 12 minutes elapsed, it appeared Ashwood would overtake Moorabbin. The Kangaroos had not been behind at any stage, despite fierce pressure from the Magpies in the second half.

In the frantic final minutes each side managed a behind. Finally, 23 minutes in, Trent Davey marked for the Kangaroos. He goaled on the siren to give Moorabbin an 11-point win.

With the icy wind behind it in the third term, Ashwood had threatened to wipe out Moorabbin’s 21-point half time advantage, but the Kangaroos’ backline repelled numerous attacks. Matthew Johansson spent most of the term in the backline and helped inspire his Kangaroo teammates.

The defensive efforts of Moorabbin only allowed Ashwood to pull the margin back to 13 points at three quarter time.

It was a credit to Ashwood that it won the last term despite being against the wind, but it would have been an injustice for the Kangaroos to be defeated after playing well from the outset.

Sean Kelly got Moorabbin off to a positive start, kicking the team’s first goal of the game and he continued to play well. The Kangaroos skipped out to a 20-point lead during the first term, but Ashwood hit back, cutting the Moorabbin lead to just 7 points at the first change.

Ashwood coach Mick Rossborough urged his players to take the momentum into the second quarter, but it was the Kangaroos who booted the first three majors of the term to help establish a crucial half time buffer.

Zdenek Hostalek took on plenty of ruckwork for the Kangaroos in the absence of Liep Kuel and was a valuable contributor around the ground. He kicked a goal and was named the winner’s best player. Trent Davey found form with four of the Kangaroos’ goals, and teammate Kelly chipped in with three and was named the side’s second best.

Preliminary Final – Saturday 5th September

Mount Waverley vs Moorabbin (Meade Reserve) It is amazing how much can change in a week. When Moorabbin and Mount Waverley met in the Qualifying Final, the Mountain Lions appeared hungry and switched on. They destroyed the Kangaroos by 63 points and the margin was not entirely reflective of Mount Waverley’s dominance. It was only Moorabbin’s accurate shooting for goal that saved it from greater embarrassment.

Yet, these sides clash again two weeks later for a spot in the biggest game of all, and the result seems far from a certainty. Mount Waverley failed to carry its momentum into the second week of the finals and was punished by Black Rock. Moorabbin showed tremendous resolve to hang on for a meritorious victory over a determined Ashwood.

The Division 3 competition has provided tremendous entertainment throughout the season, with regular surprises, and there is every chance that there are more twists to come.

In 2015, the Mountain Lions have beaten Moorabbin twice, whilst the Kangaroos have one victory over this week’s adversary.

Mount Waverley deserves to start as the favourite to claim a Grand Final spot after such a comprehensive and recent demolition of the Kangaroos.

But don’t write off the Kangaroos in what promises to be a much closer battle.

Doyle’s Bridge Hotel > Seniors Sat saw us face our old foe in Mt Waverley, which is usually a close encounter whenever

we play & the game started at a frantic pace with the Jets making the most of their chances into a stiff breeze, only for Mount to hit back late in the quarter & take a slender lead into the first break. The second term saw our boys tidy up a few areas & put some scoreboard pressure on with 4 goal to 1 term. The ‘premiership’ quarter was vital in this clash & the Jets definitely stepped up to the plate with some solid team defence & taking full advantage of forward entries , thus outscoring the Lions into the breeze & 20 point gap heading into the last. The last term saw us hold mount scoreless thanks to the work of the back unit & the forwards did their job with some straight kicking, the final margin being 7 goals. A full 4 quarter effort & solid contributions all across the ground sees us earn the right to be first into the Grand final in 2 weeks time, make sure you get all family & friends along on the days to support in what will be our first GF appearance since 2007

Brighton TOYOTA > Reserves After our first finals showing in quite a few years last week, the reserves were keen to

bounce back & hopefully a few lessons were learnt. Again we started strong with most of the play through the first half, but we still couldn’t manage to shake CPL through some wayward kicking & wasted chances. The entire second half was an arm wrestle from siren to siren, our wasted chances ( 1.9 for the half) always keeping the contest close, having much of the play in the last term into the breeze, with Nicho slotting the goal to wrestle back the lead which saw us hold on for a great 5 point victor. Like the seniors the day prior a very even team performance with special mention to Dyl on a polished 4 quarter display. Hopefully the further experience gained, in a very tight/ high intensity match will assist us for our shot at a place in the GF next week.

Butcher Club Match Report What a great win. Coming off a disappointing result the week before. We got off to a great start, kicking into the wind in the first quarter and managed to be in front at the first

break. It was are real arm wrestle for the remainder of the day . It wasn’t a pretty win , but a win we are obviously happy to have. Credit to Ashwood as they didn’t give up and tested us to the very last seconds of the game. It was a terrific team effort today with everyone playing their role. A special

mentions to all our supporters and players family that certainly helped from the sidelines in getting us over the line.

The Butcher club was again pivotal in assisting us in our preparation for Saturdays Game.

SOUTH YARRA The Yarras had a dark day, with both the Reserves and Thirds losing their Second Semi Final. However, both teams get a second chance in the Preliminary Final to be played on 5th September 2015 at Clayton.

The Thirds All 4 Pets Report: The Thirds confidence was Skye high after beating Sandown in the qualifying final.

Skye Bombers won the toss and chose to kick against the wind. The Yarras didn’t get off to a great start, as the Bombers got their first goal within the first minute of the game courtesy of a kick from out of the backline hitting a Skye player on the chest. The Bombers kicked three goals before the Yarras scored two behinds. Knight received a hit knocking him down resembling a jousting duel in the medieval ages. A. Evans was fantastic around the ground, side stepping and baulking around his opponents. At quarter-time the Yarras were trailing by nineteen points.

Despite Skye having the wind, the Yarras were able to keep them scoreless for the first nine minutes of the second quarter. Duffy and Hill were brilliant down back clearing the footy away. At half-time the Yarras were still within a sniff, though the margin was now 32 points.

It then began to rain in the third quarter as Skye kicked five goals in the opening 15 minutes. Until Hume directed traffic and snagged the Yarras only goal for the day after fifty-nine minutes had elapsed for the game. Hope echoed through the Yarras cheer squad. However, it was short lived as the Bombers kicked two more goals to end the third quarter seventy-one points ahead.

Chopper made some hard hitting tackles that knocked the hot air out of his opponents. Bertone was everywhere collecting possessions like a hoarder. M. Bohan now has Sherrin permanently inked across his knuckles from the many defensive punches he did. C. Dore cleared the ball from the defensive 50m more times than his namesake, Scarlett did in his career. The Bombers kicked another four goals in the final quarter whilst the Yarras were kept scoreless.

The Bombers held possession for more of the game than the Yarras. However, it must be said, that the Yarras pressured the determined Bombers and restricted their ball carry. The Yarras lost by 97 points.

Skye advance to the Grand Final yet to be defeated. The Yarras will battle Keysborough in the Preliminary Final at Meade Reserve, Haughton Road, Clayton from 9:30am on 5th September 2015 for a place in the Grand Final.

The Tower Hotel Reserves Report: The Yarras had the week off, whilst Endeavour Hills played Black Rock in the Qualifying Final. The Yarras went in to the Second Semi Final only been beaten once during the home-and-away season, back in round 2 which was attributed to a lack of availabilities and the Yarras’ weakest side in 2015. The Yarras confidence reached ‘Jason Akermanis’ level (far too high).

It was a poor start for the Yarras seemingly confused as to which way they were kicking. But they started by kicking against the strong wind. It rained intermittently all day.

Endeavour Hills had most of the possession, the Yarras backline minimised the Falcons opportunities on goal whilst at the other end the Yarras could not capitalise on their opportunities on goal during the first quarter. O. Smith opened the account for the Yarras with a right foot snap. At the end of the opening quarter, the scores were even.

During the second quarter, the Yarras backline held strong, led by Presland who was ably assisted by some brilliant work from Pearse. The Yarras restricted Endeavour Hills to just three scoring shots, kicking just 2-1. Costello was brilliant, as he attacked the football like a hungry lion on an antelope in a David Attenborough documentary. However, at the other end of the ground, the Yarras peppered the goal face but couldn’t find the middle of the big sticks. The Yarras kicked a disgusting seven points and upon reflection it was the downturn of the game which resembled the stock market at the start of the great depression.

At halftime the Yarras sat in shock as they trailed, albeit by only one goal. Mahoney needed to try

something different to spark his players, so he shifted M. Jewell from the midfield into the forward line.

A change to the Yarras plans worked instantaneously as M. Jewell went on a goal kicking spree, kicking four goals in the premiership quarter. It seemed like he could do no wrong. He was taking marks and making his opponent look like a rodeo clown. Including one gift from a stabbing pass from R. Dore. The Yarras changed their goal kicking woes to kick a more commendable 4-1. But the bleeding at the other end could not be stopped as the Falcons enjoyed the assistance from the wind, kicking 3-6 and keeping a five point lead.

In the fourth quarter the ball remained in the Yarras’ defensive 50m for the majority of the quarter as the Yarras struggled to hold clean possession of the wet football and clear it despite attempts from the long kicking Baxter and Pearse’s run. The Yarras became distracted by the oldest solution in the play book to shut down an inform forward, have a spare man in defence. Things didn’t go the Yarras’ way, including the bounce of the footy, decisions from the officials, etc. The Yarras could only manage one point during normal time in the last quarter whilst the Falcons kicked 2-6. R. Dore received a free kick and went back to have a shot on goal after the final siren, the outcome would not change the winner of the game. However, the Falcon on the mark jumped over the mark and R. Dore received a 50m penalty. Congratulations R. Dore, for scoring a goal and getting two kicks after the siren.

The Yarras lost by sixteen points and received a much needed wake-up call.

The Yarras get a second chance on 5th September 2015 in the Preliminary Final against Black Rock at Meade Reserve, Haughton Road, Clayton. First bounce is at Midday on 29th August 2015.

ASHWOOD

M Print Colour Printers Seniors Report The Seniors headed to Heatherton on Sunday to confront Moorabbin Kangaroos in another sudden death encounter.

The ground conditions presented weren’t quite what you’d expect for a finals clash, nevertheless both teams were hard at it trying to gain some sort of dominance. Our opponents were able to kick the first major, but we were able to reply soon after. Moorabbin kicked away again, then we gained the upper hand to claw our way back. One kick in it at 1/4 time.

The 2nd term saw Moorabbin dominate possession, gaining plenty of forward entries & despite our backline working hard under pressure

we found ourselves 21 points down at 1/2 time.

The Coach restructured things at the break & with some words of wisdom we worked our way back into the game. We were able to recapture our composure & made the most of our forward chances.13 points down at the last break.

The last quarter presented us with an all or nothing type situation. Mick reassured the boys, with a great 3/4 time talk & the boys came out firing. We produced many forward entries & to our opponents credit they repelled many. Not one of our players commitment could be questioned as we whittled the deficit to 5 points.

Unfortunately we were unable to secure the lead as Moorabbin kicked a final goal on the final siren to score an 11 point win.

Although we didn’t reach our ultimate target, we can take heart in the fact we have improved from last year.

We have also added some new players & great people this season which has brought new enthusiasm.

Ashwood Football Club is a wonderful place to be a part of & I’m sure with the Coach’s plans already in progress for next season we can go even further.

THANK YOU to everyone who has been involved at the club in 2015 & we hope for your continued support! TEAM ASHWOOD!

Springvale Reserve played host to two finals over the weekend – one a qualifier, the other a knockout elimination final. Whilst the two results involved big winning margins, you could feel the finals intensity at ground level.

On the opening Saturday morning of the finals series, St Kilda City faced Bentleigh in the Qualifying Final. The winner would get the chance to move onto next week where a grand final qualifier with Dingley would be the reward.

The Saints entered the game as favourites - a far cry from the early season predictions from pundits. Their attacking setup has proved too strong in recent times, comfortably boasting the highest score of the competition. A key component of that has been Xavier Pauli as the powerful forward has registered a total of 83 goals across all regular season games – second only to Dingley’s Madison Talarico.

Nevertheless, Bentleigh could never be counted out and during the first quarter were able to bring high pressure to the contest. Despite the effort, the Saints ended the term with a 16-point buffer. The second term had a familiar feel, with both sides struggling to hit the scoreboard ultimately no goals were registered.

However, the third term saw St Kilda begin to control the game which proved to be match-winning five-goal-to-one quarter. The 46-point margin increased during the final term as Bentleigh once again went scoreless as a result of strong St Kilda defense. Xavier Pauli’s seven-goal haul was one of the differences between the sides – and to reinforce the achievement – no other player on the field managed to kick multiple goals. St Kilda’s reward? A grand final qualifier with Dingley at the same venue next week.

On Sunday it was Hampton and Oakleigh District’s turn to take the field in the Elimination Final. Oakleigh entered their first final with high hopes having closed the gap to the Hammers over the course of the season; and this was their prize. Despite being in their debut season, they charged ahead with an opening term of 25 to four. The 21-point margin stunned Hampton into action, as the second term saw a stronger contested and defensive effort to see the Hammers move ahead by one point at the half time break.

The beginning of the second half saw the Hammers continue their ascendency as they began to creep away, kicking five goals to two for the third term to

ensure a 16-point lead going into the final break. Unfortunately, Oakleigh had nothing left to give as Hampton drove home the result with an eight-goal final quarter to win by 69 points.

The Hammers have recently struggled but the lengthy finals series could provide them with a chance to return to their early season form. They’ll meet Bentleigh next week in what will be a do-or-die fixture where the loser will be eliminated, and the winner will move on to a Preliminary Final. For Oakleigh, a disappointing end cannot dampen their debut season which saw them win 10 games to reach finals, ultimately demonstrating their potential moving forward to season 2016.

Finals – Week Two:

Second Semi Final Saturday 5th September St Kilda City vs Dingley

Key Players Xavier Pauli (St Kilda City) – His seven-goal haul helped dismantle Bentleigh and in a team full of attacking options, Pauli promises to be the Saints’ avenue to a premiership charge.

Madison Talarico (Dingley) – He has booted 101 goals so far this season and will remain the side’s key target.

Prediction: Saints by 15

First Semi Final Sunday 6th September Bentleigh vs Hampton

Key Players Kade Heaphy-Wemyss (Bentleigh) – Capable of bagging multiple goals, Heaphy-Wemyss has played 14 games this season and will be a key component if the side is to make the Preliminary Final.

Michael Lee (Hampton) – He saved his best game of the season for one of the most important occasions and was a key factor behind their Elimination Final win.

Prediction: Demons by 29

The four best sides are left and it will come down to who brings their best effort on the day. Who will move closer to a premiership? Stay tuned for more news and head down to the Springvale Reserve this weekend to see more finals action!

UMPIRE’S CORNER / THE WHITE KNIGHTThe pressure is on for Grand Final spots this weekend, with the two Division 3 panels and a Thirds panel to be announced after training next Thursday and the remaining six panels to be announced the following Wednesday. Your on-field performances this week will have a big impact on if and where you are umpiring next week. Off-field performances may also count, and arriving at matches on-time, and neatly dressed, will count in your favour at the selection table.

Congratulations to the many SFNL umpires who ran SMJFL Grand Finals last week. Of the 15 Grand Finals, all but one featured at least one SFNL umpire!

The Under 17 Division 1 grand final was played under lights for the first time this year at Trevor Barker Oval and was decided by a goal. Out of the six umpires appointed to this match five umpire in the SFNL as well and all did an exceptional job on the day! The SFNL umpires to officiate were Matt Mahoney (Field), Jack Duncanson (Boundary), Courtney Stelling (Boundary), Dom Clifford (Goal) and Tevan D’Souza (Goal). Teavan also umpired 5 other SMJFL Grand Finals over two Sunday’s. Some of our other umpires to officiate in the U17s finals included Joel Lewis (U17 Div 2), Glenn Emery & Jack McKinley (U17 Div 3). Not only was Glenn required to use his voice, which has been compared to numerous animals, in his U17 Div 3 match, but while the emergency umpire in the U17 Div 2 he showed his trigger speed running out on numerous occasions to make his voice heard! Leo Laucher-Linares is an SFNL boundary umpire but also won the SMJFL best first year field umpire award. Leo played in a grand final last Sunday but unfortunately his team lost.

In our Under 16’s finals, last year’s Division 1 Senior Grand Final goal umpire, Nick Bridges, field umpired the U16 Div 1 Grand Final with Nathan Guy. The match was decided with a kick after the siren! Nick

has a habit of umpiring in close grand finals with his 2014 Grand Final going into extra time. Chris Hughes umpired the U16 Div 3 Grannie, while in the Under 15s, Josh Heath and Tim Ryan officiated as field umpires. Jordan McGillivray officiated on the boundary while Sam Sargeant and Luke MacGuire were in the goals for two of the grand finals. In the Under 14s, Molly Bowman, Jake Rositani, Paige Hinrichs and Erin Learmonth featured in the field. Erin managed to go to the wrong ground for her final after her brother Troy turned up a day early on the same weekend!

Rob Roscoe and Jim Alwer have helped out by goal umpiring the SMJFL finals for several years and they were joined this year by Tevan D’Souza, Sam Sargeant, Luke MacGuire, Graeme Brown and Dave Weatherhead. The relationship between our Association and the SMJFL grows stronger each year.

Heading on to the field for a Div 1 Reserves Qualifying Final without a whistle is not a good career move for a boundary umpire. Luckily no-one spotted this at Springvale last Saturday!

On Thursday, we will celebrate the Division 3 Grand Final appointments with a meal after training. Then, the following Wednesday, all appointments for Umpires being selected to umpire in the last week of the finals will be announced at the Grand Final Appointments Night, which is being held at the Huntingdale Golf Club, Windsor Ave, South Oakleigh.

Life Members of the Association who wish to attend the Appointments Night can do so at the discounted rate of $20 per head. They will need to email Peter Martin on [email protected] if they wish to attend.
