WELCOME!Summer is here! I always view this season as a time for growth and change. This is a time to tackle new projects and get things in order. To help you with that impulse, we have classes in gardening, learning Spanish or New Mexico explorations with one of our outstanding tour guides.

Kids camps and classes are really special this year. No matter where your children’s interests lie, we have something to keep them engaged and learning. Kids can try physical challenges on the ropes course, theater for teens or kids, and computer camps where young people can learn game programming. New this year, we have the artists who pen the Pink Panther comic strip coming to teach art and cartooning to kids. They are sure to be fun, energetic classes with some really special instructors.

Whether you have been painting all your life, or moved to town to discover your inner artist, Continuing Education has many classes where you can learn to express yourself. Note to students, if you are working for a degree, Continuing Education courses are non-credit. Some of the classes provide all of the supplies; others require you to purchase materials. NEW! FEARLESS CREATIVITYSelf-expression is a boost for your creative spirit. In this workshop, you experiment with simple watercolor, collage and printmaking techniques. CANYON COLORS: THE PASTEL LANDSCAPE AT GHOST RANCHJoin master pastelist Jane Shoenfeld on an excursion to Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu. On Friday evening, the class will meet in the college studios, where the instructor will teach you how to create brilliant color with pastel techniques. On Saturday, the class will meet in Abiquiu. You will create expressive pastel paintings of these canyons and mesas. Please note, there is a $10 entry fee to Ghost Ranch, not included in the course fee.

POUR PAINTINGThis class is for students who want to express their creativity but lack art skills. Paint in oils and use gravity to move the paint. ALCHEMY OF MIXED MEDIAStimulate your muse or expand your art practices in this workshop dedicated to the alchemy of materials. Begin with idea-generating techniques on paper, then move to surfaces using handmade gesso on wood panels. Pencils, pastel, watercolor, gouche, acrylics and binders collage into something larger. Exercises and demonstrations provide new approaches to technique and process, and group discussions and critiques explore the practical and the philosophical. No experience necessary.

CRAFTSEnthusiasm and a desire to learn something new are the only requirements for our crafts classes. Continuing Education students learn new skills and make crafts to give as gifts or keep for themselves. If there is a supply list, it may be found on the website after the course title under “Syllabus Available.”

CALLIGRAPHY AND LETTERING ARTSLearn the art of beautiful writing using the simplest of tools, a chisel-pointed pen nib and ink. Practice the lower and upper case letterforms of italic writing. This hands-on course allows you to explore pen, ink and paper while practicing techniques. Finish class with your own samplers to keep and practice.

CLAY: THROWING ON THE POTTERY WHEELIn a friendly environment, learn the basics of how to use the pottery wheel to make functional pots. FITNESS AND WELLNESSOur Fitness and Wellness classes allow you the opportunity to strengthen your body and mind through active participation in a course such as yoga or to study the nuances of good health management through a variety of lecture and discussion courses.

WARM WATER ARTHRITIS MANAGEMENTFor those suffering with arthritis and other disabling conditions, warm water exercise is one of the best therapies. The buoyancy of aquatic exercise helps prevent injury from sudden body movements, while the warm water promotes relaxation. Taking place in a 90 to 91 degree therapy pool, this class consists of stretches, a light cardio segment, strengthening exercises, core development, flexibility movements and a cool down using relaxation techniques and breath control. Students must be able to stand and walk in the pool. A $6 per entry facility fee applies. No class July 5.

Discover where the state’s water resources have been impaired by human activity and where these impairments are adversely impacting life. Geographic information systems (GIS) technology provides a spatial analysis of successes and failures in addressing these problems. Though the emphasis is on environmental awareness, some GIS training is provided. GIS skills are not required.

GEOLOGIC EXPLORATION INTO THE VALLES CALDERAThis one-day field trip will enter the Valles Caldera National Preserve, exploring the fascinating geologic story told by rock exposures inside the caldera. The caldera has experienced profound changes involving resurgent uplift, numerous volcanic eruptions, lakes and erosion of the rim. This class guides you through the concepts and terms necessary to successfully negotiate an identification key. Two introductory classroom sessions familiarize you with the botanical basics of flower anatomy. You are then ready to hit the field on the weekend and visit several different habitats. VALLES CALDERA ECOLOGY HIKE ON THE SOUTH RIMThis six-mile, round trip hike will explore the overall ecology of the floor of Caldera to the southern rim. We will be in the area of the first and second day of Las Conchas fire in June 2011. We can see the response of these habitats and ecosystems to the various burn intensities, from mild to severe. We’ll also see the overlap of La Mesa and the Dome fires to the east and south, and how the southern Jemez Mountains have evolved with drought, conflagration and regeneration.

PACK LIGHT CAMPING UNDER THE STARS AND ASPENSEnjoy colorful wildflowers and views of the alpine peaks as we pack lighter in the Pecos Wilderness. Cradled by a high country canyon, our gradual trail will be constant companion to the vigorous waters of Rio Santa Barbara. A trip package will be provided at the pre-trip meeting, including all your meals and route information. VALLES CALDERA EAST RIM HIKEThis 7.5 mile, round-trip hike explores the overall ecology of the upper reaches of the Pajarito Plateau to the edge of the mountainous rim of the Caldera. On our way to Canada Bonita, we walk through an edge of the Cerro Grande fire into Las Conchas fire path of June 2011. A primary driver of biodiversity in the Jemez Mountains, periodic fires have shaped the landscape for millennia. Students will see the beginning of changes to the habitats and learn the importance of refuges and micro-habitats.


NEW! HIGH ALTITUDE ECOLOGYThe extreme conditions of the highest reaches of our local mountains will show us adaptability at the edge. A moderate hike of four and a half miles over nine hundred vertical feet out of the ski basin parking lot allows us to encounter many micro-habitats and soaring views. Views of the Pacheco Fire will give us an idea of the long cycle of succession at high elevations. The carving action of glaciers will be apparent at the apex of our hike, where the elements of nature are severe and plants must complete their growth in a matter of weeks.

JOURNEY TO THE NORTH RIM: VALLES CALDERAExperience magnificent vistas in the northern Jemez Mountains with geologist Kirt Kempter. Travel to Española and then up to the northern Jemez Mountains. Ascending the back side of Chicoma Peak, there are spectacular views of the Rio Grande Rift, Pajarito Plateau and other geologic features. Our destination is a picnic lunch stop on the north rim of the Valles Caldera, providing a spectacular view of the northern caldera. A lecture at this stop will provide a geologic history of the caldera since the massive eruption that occurred 1.2 million years ago. Other geologic highlights include overviews of Cerro Pedernal, the Rio Grande Rift and the Chama River Valley.

Sean Fairbridge is a clay artist. He teaches for Santa Fe Clay and maintains his own studio.

Fred Friedman retired from the New Mexico Railroad Bureau where he was bureau chief. He has an extensive knowledge of New Mexico’s railroading history.

Tobah (Toby) M. Gass has a Ph.D. in ecology and has worked for both the National Park Service and the National Forest Service.

Jason Goodyear is a media composer, musician, sound artist and educator who works with new music and communication technologies and has been teaching at SFCC in Continuing Education for over 10 years.

Kevin Gorges has studied art in the U.S. and abroad and has taught in Ireland and Italy. Currently he teaches at Valdes Art and SFCC.

Kirt Kempter, Ph.D. is a local geologist who provides tours around the world for the Smithsonian and National Geographic.

Mary Leatherberry is an enthusiastic dog owner and trainer with years of experience teaching dog obedience.

Amanda Lechner has a Master of Fine Arts degree from Rhode Island School of Design.

Andrew Lovato has been teaching guitar to Santa Fe youth and adults for many years. Formerly an professor at the College of Santa Fe, he is now a fulltime instructor at SFCC.

R.C. Luna is a certified yoga and Pilates instructor and has been teaching at SFCC for several years.

Lauren Mantecon is represented by the William and Joseph Gallery in Santa Fe, and has taught for the University of Portland.

Richard Marchese has written more than 600 proposals for more than $100 million in funds, spanning a 30-year career.

David Markwardt is the director of Teamwork in Action, the adventure program at SFCC. He also has a Master of Fine Arts in poetry from the Vermont College of Fine Arts.

Fernando Mayans oversees the Spanish language program in continuing education at SFCC and is a native of Uruguay. He teaches advanced Spanish classes as well as being a translator for the Santa Fe Opera.

Kathlene McGaw is a certified Pet First Aid instructor through Pet Tech Inc. and has been teaching both pet owners and pet professionals throughout New Mexico and Arizona. She is a certified pet groomer and the owner of McGaw’s Paws.

Peter Murphy is a retirement and estate planning specialist and has been teaching at SFCC for over five years.

Natasha Nargis Lara is an accomplished weaver and freelance journalist. She writes for the Santa Fe New Mexican, among many other publications.

William Neuwirth has a Master of Science degree in Biology and is a seasoned outdoor tour guide.

Anne-Sabine Nicolas, Ph.D., French studies, is originally from France and has been teaching French for over 15 years.

Many classes fill quickly. We recommend that you register no later than four working days before the starting date of the class. You may register for most classes up until the starting date, but if you delay, the class may either be full or canceled due to insufficient enrollment. Registrations cannot be accepted at classes.

NOTEClasses will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Prices and room assignments may change without notice. Please check the website for current information. SFCC is not responsible for typographical errors.

Registration is not considered final until payment has been made.

FOUR WAYS TO REGISTERRegistration is not considered final until payment has been made.

1. Online (returning user). Returning students may visit www.sfcc.edu and click on JACK or the REGISTER FOR CLASSES link. You will need your user name and password to access your student account and register.

2. By Phone. Both new and returning students may register with an enrollment specialist by calling 505-428-1270 during regular business hours: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; and Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

3. In Person. Both new and returning students can register in the Welcome and Advising Center at SFCC on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., or Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

4. By Mail. Both new and returning students can mail a completed registration form along with payment to:

CLASS FEESContinuing Education classes are self-sustaining, and class fees must cover all program expenses. Fees are based on an estimated minimum number of students. Class fees are subject to change without notice. Please check the website for current information and review the refund policy before registering.

SFCC USERNAME AND PASSWORD SFCC assigns each student a username. You can get your username by going to www.sfcc.edu and clicking on the link to JACK. Once there, follow the instructions to find your username and password.

REFUND POLICY Class fees are automatically refunded in full when: • the class or workshop is full. • the activity is canceled. • SFCC rejects the enrollment application.

If you drop a class, your class fee is automatically refunded based on the following:

Classes of three or more sessions • If you drop a class before the second session, the full

class fee will be refunded.• If you drop a class after the second session, no refund

will be given.

Classes of one or two sessions • If you drop a class at least one day before the starting

date, the full class fee will be refunded.• If you drop a class less than one day before the starting

date, no refund will be given.

Some classes have special refund policies. This information is listed in the class description. Please allow three to five weeks for processing a refund.

CLASS CHANGES & CANCELLATIONS A class will be closed when it reaches maximum enrollment, so register early. Classes with insufficient enrollment will be canceled three business days prior to the starting date of the class, and those registered will be notified of the cancellation by phone. To make contacting you easier, please provide day and evening phone numbers with your registration. Refunds will be processed automatically for classes canceled by SFCC.

SFCC reserves the right to cancel any class. Class locations, dates, times and instructors are subject to change without notice.

THE ASTRONOMERS’ WORKBENCH: LIGHT, THE UNIVERSAL INFORMANTJuly 10, 8 to 9 p.m.We know what the stars are made of, know of their structures and their lives, only because we are able to observe and analyze their spectra. Unbroken starlight allows us to admire a star’s external characteristics; in examining their spectra, we have moved from the very small, from little waves and atoms, to the very large, to stars, and then down in scale to planets. Join us in learning more about light!

Tickets are $5 for adults; $3 for preteens and seniors; and free for SFCC students, SFCC employees and planetarium members.

Tickets go on sale at the door 30 minutes before each program. Shows begin promptly; latecomers cannot admitted.

This has enabled SFCC to develop curricula and trainings to ensure that our workforce has access to the most up-to-date information in these fields.
