Todays Situation

Aluminum and zinc wires have many uses, only some ofwhich is for combustion wire and electric arc wire ther -mal spray processes. Many of these other commercialand industrial needs do not require the stringent qualitycontrol necessary for thermal spray.

For thermal spray processes, wire quality has a two-fold effect. First, to ensure reliable spray processingand longevity of wire feed and gun components, it is

important that he wire be of high quality and held tostringent dimensional controls. Therefore, wires that arenot designed speci cally for thermal spray processesmay increase those costs associated with systemmaintenance and downtime. Second, for thermal spraycoatings to meet their intended service requirements,the chemistry of the wire material must also be tightlycontrolled. If it is not, the thermal spray coatings may notmeet the intended service targets.

Quality Control

Sulzer Metcos highly demanding speci cations foraluminum and zinc thermal spray wire includes tightlycontrolled requirements for dimensional tolerance, wiresurface condition, chemistry and coiling characteristics.

Thermal Spray wires supplied by Sulzer Metco haveprecisely de ned tolerances for wire diameter and round -ness. In addition, wires are quali ed to have smoothsurface nishes, without surface blemishes and free ofcontaminants such as scale or grease. Wires are coatedwith suitable lubricants and spools are lay-wound. Thisall combines to assure smooth wire feed during the sprayprocess and longevity of spray gun components; minimiz -ing downtime and thermal spray equipment failures.

Tight chemistry compositions ensures that our zinc andaluminum wires will produce coatings that provide maxi -mum corrosion protection in service.

We perform quality control inspections for physicalcharacteristics (dimensional size, labeling, packaging,surface nish, etc.) on every lot of material. We reviewand verify test reports from our material suppliers andwe perform periodic chemistry over-checks for accuracyand compliance.
