Envelope Cushion

An envelope cushion or pillow cover is a simple sewing

project. Perfect for when you are short of time, or are new to

sewing. All you need is four straight lines of stitching and best

of all there is no zipper to insert

Take the measurements of your pillow/cushion insert:

Measurements for a Housewife Pillow Case:

The fabric requirement calculations below use the measurements of a pillow

insert that measures 18”x18”

The fabric requirement calculation is as follows:

(A x 2) + 6" by B + 1/2"

Using the above example the measurements are:

(18x2)+6" = 42" by 18 1/2"

Measurements for an Oxford Pillow Case:

These calculations will result in a pillow case/cushion cover with a 2” border all the

way around the cover

Take the measurements of your pillow/cushion insert:

The fabric requirement calculation is as follows:

(A x 2) + 14" by B + 4 1/2"

Using the above example the measurements are:

(18 x 2)+14" = 42" by 22 1/2"

The fabric requirement calculations below use the measurements of a pillow

insert that measures 18”x18”

Sewing the Cover:

At one of the short ends, turn under a 1/2” hem and then turn it over on itself

again. Repeat this with the other short end

From the right side of the fabric top stitch the hem in place about 3/4" from the

folded edge. Press over your line of stitching.

Follow these instructions for both styles of cover. There is one additional step at the

end for an Oxford style cover

Lay the fabric with the right side facing upwards. Fold over one side of the fabric

so that the edge of the hem is half way across the finished width of the pillow.

Using the example pillow the measurements are as follows:

Plain cover = 9”

Oxford cover = 11”

Fold over one side of the cover half the

finished width of your pillow

Next overlap the other side of the fabric. Ensure that the width of your pillow case

cover matches your pillow insert measurement

Fold over the other side of the cover so

that the finished width is achieved

Finally give the pillow case a press, before turning through to the right side and

pressing again

Next sew along the raw edges of the pillow case 1/4" from the edge

If you are making an Oxford cover follow the next step....

If you are sewing an Oxford style pillow case, first of all ensure that you have

followed the measurement guidelines for an Oxford pillow or you will not have

enough fabric to work with

Next top stitch a line of sewing along your marked line

Additional Step for Oxford Pillow Case/Cushion Cover:

Using a fabric marker pen or chalk, on the right side of the fabric mark a

rectangle (or square) 2” in from each finished edge

Finally give the cushion a press and you are done!
