PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Exciting possibilities are everywhere

when one thinks outside the box and the

comfort zone is left behind. Your dedicated

CAB is exploring ways to promote our

chapter, sewing and our talented members.

Our chapter has been involved in sewing

activities that have benefited Central Illinois

for decades, yet few have ever heard of our

sewing guild. Read on to find out how we are thinking

differently.

Several of our members sewed this year with ISU

students during Fix It Friday events in the

Bloomington/Normal area. All of us were quick to notice that

our sewing skills benefited these students. In return, we made

connections with the theatre costume department which

houses fun and interesting finds like a large steam dye pot.

Not to mention the creative energy of college students. Step

out of your comfort zone and take the time to step onto a

college campus.

This year our chapter participated in Ignite Peoria, an

event featuring 100 interactive booths for children. Our

members promoted sewing to kids via a small sewing project.

We also sponsored a sewing machine give away. How great is

that? Take the challenge and discover a civic event the guild

can participate in.

Are you familiar with Maker Spaces? I had heard the

term but was unfamiliar with the concept. The Fab Lab on the

U of I campus is such a place. The lab is filled with

technology for people to explore and use, including sewing

and embroidery machines. Those of us on the tour started

thinking of ways our members could benefit from the

equipment available at the Fab Lab. And, as we watched

college-aged individuals use sewing and embroidery

machines, we realized our sewing skills would benefit them.

Think outside the box, visit a makers space, and get your NG

involved.

The maker space networking resulted in meetings

with the Peoria Art Guild and a tour of River City Lab in

Peoria. Dialog is underway with the Art Guild to develop a

teaching classroom for our use and the use of other fiber artists

in the area. This cooperative effort has such potential for our

membership. Our task is to push forward to help turn an empty

room into a fun, creative space where we can teach others to

sew and also take classes to build our skills. How wonderful to

have the promotion and name recognition the Art Guild can

provide for our chapter. Take the initiative and discover an Art

Guild near you and make a call.

River City Lab in Peoria is a makers space that holds

interesting possibilities for our chapter. The dialog is just

beginning as to what our involvement might be, but our

chapter has a foot in the door and a place at the table, so to

speak. I am thrilled with the prospect of a place our members

can go to use equipment that we would not have in our home

studios.

Dream big, think specialized industrial sewing

machines, laser cutters and large format printers. Could be an

end to taping digital patterns together. Be still my heart. Jump

in, think outside the box and join your CAB in making our

chapter the most exciting and vibrant chapter in all of ASG

land.

SEW WITH SUE

Kaye Wood of quilting fame has passed away. Also one of our C/U members, Evelyn Kitchen has passed away.

You may remember her modeling her rain coat and umbrella at the meeting at Jumer’s in Bloomington a few years ago.

Central Illinois Chapter ASG wants to extend a special note of thanks to Mike Krokum, who has donated a lot of fabric and

yarns to our chapter that had belonged to his wife, Janis. So far, we have used it to make over 100 bibs for Crittenton Center, more

than 100 Anti-Ouch Pouches for breast cancer patients and countless hats and booties for the Angel Gowns

project. Janis must have been an avid sewer and knitter, and we are sure she would be pleased that her stash

is benefitting such great causes.

September is National Sewing Month. It is a good time to teach someone you know how to sew.

This could be a friend, grandchild, neighbor or that person who wants you to sew on a button or shorten their

pants!

Recently, the Central Illinois Chapter of ASG was the recipient of a large donation of fabric by Katie

Pilon of Washington. The beautiful quilting fabrics are being made into Anti-Ouch Pouch mastectomy pillows, Christmas stockings

for the troops, and burp pads and crib sheets for Crittenton. Even the scraps will be used for charity projects. Thanks, Katie, for the

generous donation!

Don’t forget to be working on your challenge for the annual meeting. It is Sew Fit: Sleepwear and Leisure. We have some

interesting things in the works. I look forward to seeing yours!

Sew Sassy in Urbana is having a retirement sale and is going out of business. The store has been in business for 15 years. We

hate to see this happen. However, Joyce Day and Nancy Muncaster look forward to retirement. Stop in for those bargins.

Sue Barnabee is a former Family and Consumer Sciences teacher, and member of Haute Couture Club of Chicago and Stitcher’s Guild

of Peoria. Her articles and projects have appeared in Sew News, Creative Machine Embroidery, Woodworker’s Journal and McCall’s

Quilting magazines.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS

ANTI-OUCH POUCH Anti-Ouch Pouches (AOPs) were designed by chapter member Deon Maas. This underarm hanging pillow is

intended to add a little comfort to people’s lives during a stressful, painful time. The pillow hangs from the shoulder,

fitting snugly under the arm to cushion and ease the pressure of the underarm and breast area after breast surgery, upper

body surgeries or during radiation treatment.

Tens of thousands of anti-ouch pouches have been lovingly sewn and donated to breast centers across the United

States. The American Sewing Guild featured the Anti-Ouch Pouch as the 2008 National Community Service Project.

Read more at https://www.asg.org/resources/giving-back.

The Anti-Ouch Pouch will continue to be an ongoing project for our chapter. We take them to the OSF Susan G Komen

Center and Methodist Diagnostic Center in Peoria. Digital mammography detects so many more cases of breast cancer thus increasing

the need for AOP’s. If you have questions, contact Deon Maas at [email protected] or Sue Barnabee at [email protected].

GOWNS FOR ANGELS OF CENTRAL ILLINOIS Gowns for Angels of Central Illinois began in 2013 to provide families at OSF Saint Francis’s

NICU gowns for end of life issues. This is a very difficult time for the families and many do not live in

the area. These infants are often, due to their size or circumstance, unable to use store bought gowns let

alone the logistics of purchasing them in a town where one is not familiar with. Gowns for Angels has

enough inventory on site to include not only end of life pictures, but also baptismal and family pictures

when an infant is facing a serious surgery.

The all volunteer group is made up of 4 organizing board members and a wonderful group of

stitchers. Two of the board members are NICU nurses. There are two events a year to bring us all

together for lunch, shop for new donated supplies and bring in the gowns made. The group has a permanent home, Mary’s Place,

located at 3029 N. Prospect, Peoria.

Kim Aldag of OSF coordinates the project to make Angel Dresses from wedding and formal gowns. The Angel Dresses are

for babies who never recover in the neonatal intensive care unit at Children’s Hospital of Illinois at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in

Peoria.

The gowns are made for baby boys and girls to serve as baptismal/end of life gowns. Navy, gray and black are used for pant

sets for the boys. The gowns are made to fit the small premature babies. One wedding dress can make up to 10-12 Angel Gowns. Each

little outfit comes packed in a special, pretty keepsake box. In the box, along with the gown, is a handmade blanket, hat and booties.

Over 100 wedding dresses have been donated since the project began. There is a need for pink, blue or black gowns. They

currently have a supply of wedding dresses. They also need ribbons, lace, buttons, thread and other notions, cash donations or

JOANN Fabric gift cards to purchase sewing supplies. Dresses do not need to be cleaned before you send them. Unless your gown has

been trashed, sewers have had lots of luck spot cleaning and working around damage.

ASG members can contact Sue Barnabee, [email protected] (309) 647-0111 or www.facebook.com/gowns4angels to make

donations or for more information.

CRITTENTON CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER

Crittenton Development Center serves Central Illinois children and families by providing loving

child care and a 24-hour staffed crisis nursery.

The center is in constant need of bibs. You can donate them directly, contact a CAB member for pick up or bring them to a

chapter/neighborhood meeting. The pattern is on the web site. www.centralillinoisasg.com/CommunityServiceCrittenton.html

Our chapter donates custom-made bibs, crib and cot sheets, burp pads and wash cloths to help defray the costs of purchasing

them. Those patterns are on the web site link above. Crittenton has said the items our chapter provides are "much higher quality" than

those they can purchase. Please consider helping. Supplies to make the items will be provided for you.

Our support at Crittenton Child Development Center is done by donating items that they need. This is a project we will be

continuing. Contact Kim Caywood for information at [email protected].

A WORD FROM YOUR COMMUNITY LIAISON

On August 10 our chapter of the sewing guild participated in Ignite Peoria. Ignite

Peoria is sponsored by the Arts Partners of Central Illinois and is a great event to help spark

creativity in kids as well as adults. At our booth we helped kids (and adults) sew a simple

coaster they could take home. We generated a lot of interest in our group and the kids had a

great time learning about sewing with a machine. We also held a giveaway for a sewing

machine! Matt Chappell of E. Peoria, pictured right, won the machine. All of us that

participated had a great time and we are looking forward to next year. Please keep Saturday,

August 8, 2020 open…we will definitely need volunteers.

The annual sewing retreat was held August 26-28 at the Chiara Center in Springfield, IL. This year we had eleven ladies

enjoying three days of unlimited sewing time. As usual there was lots of talking, laughing and sewing. The projects we worked on

while there ranged from quilts to clothing to costumes. The Chiara center is located in a beautiful setting amongst trees and each

evening we enjoyed a walk after our dinner. Don’t miss out on the fun…join us next year…there’s always room for more! Below are

pictures of this year’s retreat. Next year the retreat will be August 24-26. Put it on your calendar now!

Our next Community Sewing Day is Friday, September 13, at the North Branch Public Library from 10:30am to 3pm. This

time we are making Anti Ouch Pouches and we will have all the supplies to make them. All you need to bring is your sewing machine

and various colors of thread. If you don’t want to bring your machine, there will be many non-sewing jobs for you to do. Please refer

to Deon’s article, on page 12 of this newsletter, concerning Anti Ouch Pouches for more information.

We are always in need of supplies for our community service projects. If you have any of the following that you would like to

donate, please contact me or any CAB member:

Cotton or flannel fabrics for bibs, cot sheets, burp cloths

Soft cotton or flannel fabrics for anti-ouch pouches

¾ inch Velcro for anti-ouch pouches

¼ inch elastic for cot sheets

Roc-lon black out fabric used for curtain lining for the bib backing. This will have a “rubberized” back.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT SEWING DAY

Mark your calendars for Friday, September 13th

! The Central Illinois Chapter of the American Sewing Guild will hold its

annual Anti-Ouch Pouch mastectomy pillow Community Service Sewing Day. We’ll start at 10:30 am at the North Branch of the

Peoria Public Library, 3001 W. Grand Parkway. We’ll wrap it up about 3 pm.

Our group has been providing pillows to local lumpectomy and mastectomy patients for 12 years. Our efforts are greatly

appreciated. Recently, we received this: “I recently had a mastectomy with reconstruction and this was a life saver! This pillow went

with me everywhere and even now that I’m healing, I still use it in the car. I just wanted to say thank you.”

Want to sew a few? This year, the kits are partially done. The straps have been sewn, turned and pressed, and the hem of the

pillow has been folded and ironed. This should speed things along on the sewing day! The pillows are grouped into color families

(dark purples, turquoise, hot pink, black or white). So you don’t have to change thread colors all the time. Some matching thread will

be available. Bring your sewing machine or serger, bobbins and sewing supplies. This is the perfect project to work on in teams.

Not a sewer? There are plenty of non-sewing jobs to do: stuffing pillows, folding instructions, pairing up hook and loop tape,

or placing stickers on bags. We need 1,000 of each for each year’s donations.

Have fabric to donate? We always welcome soft woven fabrics as the need is ongoing. Fifteen inches of fabric makes one

pillow. Want to cut it that day? Bring a rotary cutter, cutting mat and straightedge. We’ll have an iron and ironing board available.

Have some fiberfill to donate? Each pound fills ten pillows.

Bring a sack lunch or visit a local eatery for lunch. We always have plenty of snacks and water to share. Come for all or part

of the day. It is always a fun day of sewing, friendship and fellowship.

For more information, contact Kim Caywood at [email protected] or (530) 701-4940, or Deon Maas at

[email protected] or (309) 645-4911.

FROM THE BOOKSTORE

Lingerie Design: A Complete Course, Pamela Powell

Lingerie and sleepwear make up a large sector of the fashion industry. Most brands from designer to the

high street have a lingerie line. Most schools of fashion design have courses in lingerie as an elective.

In this book, Pamela Powell shows how to design and construct lingerie, sleepwear and foundation garments.

Step-by-step illustrations demonstrate the basic blocks and show how to manipulate them into different styles. She

gives advice about how to work with the speciality fabrics used in the industry which include woven, knit, power

stretch and bias-cut fabrics.

There are specially commissioned photographs and diagrams used to showcase construction techniques specific to lingerie

including boning, elastic and lace insertion and how and where to use the myriad of closures available. A final chapter on

embellishment shows how to add unique and personal touches to garments and apply that luxurious finish.

This is a must have if you are considering making lingerie or if you just want to increase your sewing knowledge.

Vintage Couture Tailoring, Thomas von Nordheim

Traditional tailoring has not changed for many centuries. The craft is fascinating. The true tailoring

techniques are now known only by a few practicing in the best couture ateliers and tailor's workrooms.

Nothing feels quite so luxurious or sophisticated as beautifully tailored clothes. However, the tailoring

skills they require are often seen to be shrouded in mystery and the clothes therefore only accessible to the rich and

famous.

This practical book reveals the trade secrets of couture tailoring and brings vintage couture tailoring

within the reach of all of us who love to sew.

The book has step-by-step photographs and professional tips throughout. It shows how a ladies' jacket is

made and thereby introduces a range of fundamental tailoring techniques. These can be used for garments for either gender, as well as

other sewing projects.

Included is the following information of value: molding fabric to shape with the iron, employing loose interfacings; hollow

shoulder construction; pad stitching canvas; interlining and weighting hems; making tailored and bound buttonholes and many more

forgotten techniques.
