Team facts

Sevilla FC

UEFA club competition milestones• Sevilla experienced the greatest moment in their 100-year history last season when winning the UEFA Cup, theirfirst European trophy. Playing a solid and effective game, they scored 25 goals in a run which culminated in a 4-0victory against Middlesbrough FC in the Eindhoven final. With 20 minutes remaining, and trailing to Luis Fabiano'sperfectly executed 27th-minute header, Middlesbrough manager Steve McClaren risked everything. On came YakubuAyegbeni as a fourth striker, but this time the gamble didn't pay off. Sevilla exploited the extra space and two lategoals from man-of-the-match Enzo Maresca and a final strike from Frédéric Kanouté secured their first silverwaresince their Spanish Cup triumph of 1948.

En route to the final, Sevilla qualified for the group stage by defeating German side 1. FSV Mainz 05 2-0 on aggregatein the first round. They then recorded two victories and a draw from their four outings in the group stage, the Spanishside winning at home against Beşiktaş JK (3-0) and Vitória SC (3-1) as well as drawing away to Bolton WanderersFC (1-1). They would also lose away to FC Zenit St. Petersburg (2-1), but that defeat they would later avenge.

In the knockout stages, Sevilla defeated FC Lokomotiv Moskva (3-0 on aggregate, round of 32), LOSC Lille Métropole(2-1 on aggregate, round of 16), Zenit (5-2 on aggregate, quarter-finals) and FC Schalke 04 (1-0 on aggregate,semi-finals) before claiming the ultimate prize at Middlesbrough's expense.

• Sevilla would later become the third Spanish side to win the UEFA Super Cup as first-half goals from Renato andKanouté, together with a late penalty from substitute Maresca, earned a fine 3-0 victory in the all-Iberian affair againstFC Barcelona in Monaco.

• Prior to last season, Sevilla’s best season in UEFA club competition came in 1957/58 as they advanced to thequarter-finals of the European Champion Clubs’ Cup. Having overcome SL Benfica, Sevilla defeated AGF Århus 4-2on aggregate before losing 8-0 away to holders and Spanish rivals Real Madrid CF. Sevilla salvaged some pride inthe return leg, taking a two-goal lead through José Maria Paya (22) and Antonio Pahuet (29) before Madrid hit backto restore parity.

UEFA club competition honours• UEFA Cup: 2005/06• UEFA Super Cup: 2006

Ten-year record (including current season)• Sevilla are involved in their third consecutive season of UEFA club competition action. Overall, the Spanish clubhave participated in nine separate seasons since marking their first appearance with a 3-1 defeat of Benfica in thepreliminary round of the 1957/58 European Cup.

• The competition holders defeated Greek side Atromitos FC 6-1 on aggregate in the first round of the competition toqualify for the group stage for the third season in succession. They made a winning start to their defence in Athenswith goals from Kepa Blanco (16 minutes) and Sergio Valente (43) before Georgios Korakakis (64) pulled one backfor Atromitos. In the second leg, Sevilla built a two-goal lead within ten minutes courtesy of a goal from Luis Fabiano(2) and an own goal from Dimitrios Ioannoy (10). Luis Fabiano then extended the lead before the half-hour markbefore Kepa wrapped up a 4-0 win four minutes from time.

CA Osasuna

UEFA club competition milestones• Prior to the current season, Osasuna's best European season saw them advance to the third round of the 1991/92UEFA Cup following defeats of FC Slavia Sofia and VfB Stuttgart only to lose 2-0 on aggregate against AFC Ajax.

UEFA club competition honours• None

Ten-year record (including current season)• Osasuna are involved in UEFA club competitions for the second time in the past decade and for their fourth seasonoverall. They debuted in the 1985/86 UEFA Cup and appeared in the same competition again in both the 1991/92and 2005/06 seasons. This term, Osasuna started their season in the European Champion Clubs' Cup, but followingan away goals defeat against German side Hamburger SV who advanced to the UEFA Champions League, thePamplona-based side had to settle for a place in the UEFA Cup.

• UEFA Champions League hopes were dashed earlier this season by Hamburg who advanced from the EuropeanChampion Clubs' Cup third qualifying round on away goals at Osasuna's expense. The Spanish side looked to havegained a slender advantage by first holding their hosts to a scoreless draw in the opening leg and by then taking thelead after six minutes in the return through Javier Cuéllar only for Nigel de Jong to equalise for Hamburg 15 minutesfrom time. Osasuna thus moved to the UEFA Cup first round where they earned a 2-2 draw away against Trabzonsporin the opening leg with Valdo and Juanlu providing the Spanish side with a two-goal lead only for Gökdeniz Karadenizand substitute Umut Bulut to hit back to salvage a draw. There were no goals in the return as Osasuna advanced tothe group stage for the first time.

• Osasuna recovered from taking one point from their first two UEFA Cup group stage matches at home to SCHeerenveen (0-0) and away to RC Lens (1-3) to finish with two victories at the expense of Odense BK (3-1) and ParmaFC (3-0). The first victory came at the Reyno de Navarra stadium in Pamplona with Patxi Puñal (29 and 67 minutes)opening the scoring before he reduced the deficit thanks to an own goal 15 minutes from time. Any hopes of an OBfightback were extinguished three minutes from time when Bernardo Romeo added Osasuna's third. Their final outingprovided a comfortable three-goal win against the already-qualified Parma with David López (33 and 44) netting twicebefore Juanfran got on the scoresheet eight minutes from time. Nevertheless, Parma advanced as group winners onnine points, two points clear of Osasuna with Lens a further three points adrift in third.

FC Barcelona won the league with 82 points from 38 outings with RealMadrid CF (70 points), Valencia CF (69) and Osasuna (68) trailing in their wake.

European record: Osasuna featured in the first round of the UEFA Cup, but following a 3-1 away defeat againstFrench side Stade Rennais FC and a subsequent scoreless draw in Pamplona, they failed to advance to the groupstage of the competition.

Competition information

The UEFA Cup grew out of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and was first held in 1971/72. The UEFA Cup is open to theholders, the teams finishing in leading positions behind the champions in their domestic top flights, the winners ofnational cup competitions, the winners of the League Cup in certain countries, the eleven winners of the final matchesin the UEFA Intertoto Cup, three clubs from UEFA's Fair Play League and 16 clubs eliminated from the third qualifyinground of the UEFA Champions League. The eight third-placed clubs at the end of the UEFA Champions League groupstage drop into the UEFA Cup, in time for the tournament's knockout phase.

• Away goals rule: For matches played under the cup (knockout) system, the team which scores the greater aggregateof goals in the two matches qualifies for the next round. If the two teams involved in a tie score the same number ofgoals over the two legs, the team which scores more away goals qualifies for the next stage. If this procedure doesnot produce a result, i.e, if the two teams score the same number of goals at home and away, extra time of two periodsof 15 minutes shall be played at the end of the second leg. If during extra time, both teams score the same numberof goals, away goals count double (i.e. the visiting club qualifies). If no goals are scored during extra time, kicks fromthe penalty mark determine which team qualifies.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced that the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA clubcompetitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2006/07, at least four places on this list willbe reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubsfrom within the same association of the said club.

The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the clubfor two seasons. In 2007/08, the number of locally-trained players in a squad will increase to six before rising to eightin 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the clubbetween the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at leastthree seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21.

UEFA is concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubsfrom simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given agreater opportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as aconsequence.

• Competition format: Two qualifying rounds produce a first round of 80 teams who play over two legs to find the 40clubs that make up the group stage. This phase comprises eight groups of five, with each side playing four games, two at home and two away. The winners, runners-up and third-placed teams from each section advance to the last32 where they are joined by the eight third-placed clubs from the UEFA Champions League. Here, the traditionaltwo-match knockout format resumes, until the final. The 2006/07 UEFA Cup quarter-finals, semi-finals and final drawwas held in Glasgow on 16 March. The Scottish city will stage this year's final at Hampden Park on 16 May.
