1 IntroductionThankyouforpurchasingthisMETTLERTOLEDOinstrument.TheSevenCompactSeriesisnotonlyanewgenerationofintuitiveandeasy-to-operatebenchmetersforreliablemeasurements,theyalsoprovideextrasecurityagainstmistakesandsupportyourworkflowinthelaboratory.

Mistakescanbereducedtoaminimumbecauseofthefollowingcharacteristics:

NewISM®(IntelligentSensorManagement)technology:themeterautomaticallyrecognizesthesensorandtransfersthelatestsetofcalibrationdatafromthesensorchiptothemeter.Thelastfivecalibrationsaswellastheinitialcalibrationcertificatearealsostoredonthesensorchip.Thesecanbereviewed,transferredandprinted.ISM®providesadditionalsecurityandhelpseliminatemistakes.

Multi-languagegraphicaluserinterfaceonalarge4.3inchdisplaywithintuitivemenuguidance,makingtheoperatinginstructionsprimarilyasourceofreference.

GLPandRoutinemodefortheneedsofanyoperator:intheroutinemode,thedeletionofdataispreventedandchangingthosesettingsthatwouldpotentiallyjeopardizethecollectionofreliableresults,suchasmeasurementsettings,areblocked.Thisprovidesextrasecurityforroutinedailywork.SkilledworkersareadvisedtoemploytheGLPmodetoenjoytheinstruments’powerfulfullfunctionalrange.

Thisinstrumentsupportstheworkflowofamodernlaboratoryinallstagesofthedatacollectionandarchivingprocess:

Theelectrodearmcanbeoperatedwithonehandandmovesperfectlystraightupanddowntobringtheelectrodeintheperfectpositionforthebestmeasurementperformance.Thisallowsfastermeasurementsandposeslessrisktotipoverthesamplevesseland/ordamagetheheadofthesensor!

Onlyonekeypressrequired:READstartsameasurementandCALacalibration.It’ssoeasy! EasyswitchingbetweenthenormalviewandtheuFocus™.Thenormalviewhasallthe

measurementparametersandIDsonthedisplaytoprovideyouaninstantcompleteoverview.IntheuFocus™onlythemostimportantinformationisshowninlargedigits,suchasmea-surementvalueandtemperature.Thisenablesyoutofocuscompletelyonthemeasurement,withoutgettingdistractedbyinformationthatisnotrelevanttoyou.

EasytogglingwiththeMODEsoftkeybetweenthevariousmeasurementparameterseitherbeforeorduringameasurement.

Versatiledataarchivingoptions:printdata,exportdatatoaUSB-stick,orsenddatatoaPCwithLabXdirectsoftware!

FCCRulesThisdevicecomplieswithPart15oftheFCCRulesandRadioInterferenceRequirementsoftheCanadianDepartmentofCommunications.Operationissubjecttothefollowingconditions:(1)thisdevicemaynotcauseharmfulinterference,and(2)thisdevicemustacceptanyinterferencereceived,includinginterferencethatmaycauseundesiredoperation.

ThisequipmenthasbeentestedandfoundtocomplywiththelimitsforaClassAdigitaldevice,pursuanttoPart15oftheFCCrules.Theselimitsaredesignedtoprovidereasonableprotectionagainstharmfulinterferencewhentheequipmentisoperatedinacommercialenvironment.Thisequipmentgenerates,uses,andcanradiateradiofrequencyenergyand,ifnotinstalledandusedinaccordancewiththeinstructionmanual,maycauseharmfulinterferencetoradiocommunica-tions.Operationofthisequipmentinaresidentialareaislikelytocauseharmfulinterferenceinwhichcasetheuserwillberequiredtocorrecttheinterferenceathisownexpense.

3.2 ConnectingasensorToconnectpHorIonsensors,disconnecttherubberplugfromthepHsocket.Connecttheelec-trodeandmakesurethattheplugsareproperlyinserted.Ifyouareusinganelectrodewithabuilt-intemperatureprobeoraseparatetemperatureprobe,connecttheotherleadtotheATCsocket.TwisttheRCA(Cinch)plugtoeasetheattachmentofthesensor.

ISM®sensorWhenconnectinganISM®sensortothemeter,oneofthefollowingconditionshavetobemetforthecalibrationdatatobetransferredautomaticallyfromthechipofthesensorintothemeterandisusedforfurthermeasurements.AfterattachingtheISM®sensor...

Themetermustbeswitchedon. (Ifthemeterisalreadyswitchedon)theREADkeyispressed. (Ifthemeterisalreadyswitchedon)theCALkeyispressed.

WestronglyrecommendyoutoswitchoffthemeterwhendisconnectinganISMsensor.Indoingso,youmakesurethatthesensorisnotremovedwhiletheinstrumentisreadingdatafromorwrit-ingdatatotheISM-chipofthesensor.

TheISMicon appearsonthedisplayandthesensorIDofthesensorchipisregisteredandappearsonthedisplay.

Thecalibrationhistory,theinitialcertificateandthemaximumtemperaturecanbereviewedandprintedinthedatamemory.

4.8.3 EditingvaluesinatableThemeterhasafeature,whichallowstheusertoenter,editorremovevaluesintables.(forexam-ple,temperatureandbuffervaluesforacustomizedbuffergroup).Thisisaccomplishedbyusingthesoftkeysonthedisplaytonavigatefromcelltocell.

4.10 AutomaticbufferrecognitionThemeterfeaturesautomaticpHbufferrecognitionforthepredefinedbuffergroups(see“Appen-dix”)andtheuser-definedbuffergroups.Thebufferswithinabuffergroupareautomaticallyrecog-nizedbythemeteranddisplayedduringcalibration.Thisfeatureallowsthecalibrationinanyorderwithinapredefinedoruser-definedpHbuffergroup.

4.11 Samplemeasurements PlacethesensorinthesampleandpressREADtostartameasurement.

• Thedisplayshowsthereadingsofthesample.• Theendpointformatblinks,indicatingameasurementisinprogress.

Assoonasthemeasurementisstableaccordingtotheselectedstabilitycriterion,theStabilityiconappears.

Ifthe“automaticendpoint”formatisselected,themeasurementstopsautomaticallyassoonastheStabilityiconappears.

Ifthe“manualendpoint”formatisselected,pressREADtomanuallystopthemeasurement. Ifthe“timedendpoint”formatisselected,themeasurementstopsafterthepresettime.

4.12 DatatransferItispossibletotransfereitheralldataorauser-definedsetofdatafromthememorytoaMETTLERTOLEDOprinter(forexampleRS-P26),toaPCbyusingLabXdirectortoaUSBmemorystick.

Thefollowingsectiondescribeshowtoproceedwiththedifferentconfigurations.

Datatransferfromthemetertoaprinter1 ConnecttheRS232cabletothemeterandthecorrespondinginterfaceonthebacksideofthe

printer.

2 Selecttheinterface“printer”inthedatatransfersettingsmenu(see“Setup:DataTransferSet-tings”).

3 Starttransferinthedatamenu.

Forsomeprinters(e.g.RS-P25,RS-P26andRS-P28),thebaudratesettingswillbeautomaticallysynchronizedwiththoseoftheinstrument.

Forotherprintersthesettingsfordatatransferintheprinterneedtobeadjustedasfollows:

Baudrate:1200 Databits:8 Parity:none Stopbits:1

DatatransferfromthemetertoLabXdirectpH1 ConnecttheinstrumentviaUSBBtothePC.

The iconappearsonthedisplay.

2 Selecttheinterface“LabXdirect”inthedatatransfersettingsmenu(see“Setup:DataTrans-ferSettings”).

3 OpenLabXdirectpHandselectthecorrectinstrument.

2 SelecttheitemandExporttoUSB-Stickinthedatamenutostartthetransfer.

Thedatawillbeintext(extension.txt)format.TheinstrumentwillcreateanewfolderontheUSB-stickinwhichthenameisthedateintheinternationalformat,i.e.firstyear,thenmonthandthentheday.Example:whenthedateis25November2011,thenameofthefolderwillbe:20111125.

8.1 MetermaintenanceNeverunscrewthetwohalvesofthehousing!

Themetersdonotrequireanymaintenanceotherthananoccasionalwipewithadampcloth.Thehousingismadeofacrylonitrilebutadienestyrene/polycarbonate(ABS/PC).Thismaterialissensi-tivetosomeorganicsolvents,suchastoluene,xyleneandmethylethylketone(MEK).

Anyspillageshouldbewipedoffimmediately.

8.2 ElectrodemaintenanceMakesurethepHelectrodeisalwayskeptfilledwiththeappropriatefillingsolution.

Formaximumaccuracy,anyfillingsolutionthatmayhave“crept”andencrustedtheoutsideoftheelectrodeshouldberemovedwithdeionizedwater.
