Many of the students will be taking part in the event in the form of musical, drama and dance performances; others will be showcasing their artworks; and giving speeches and demonstrations. Some of the students’ national and international successes will be displayed and the Year 6 leaders will take guests on guided tours of our school showing off their continually developing leadership skills. The day promises to be fun-filled and I invite you all to come and join in with us as we show the wider community what The Reddam Way really is! Seussical’ rehearsals are careening ahead and the students are getting excited for the production which will take place at Nida Parade Theatres on Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 September. This show is not to be missed so put the dates in your diary. Tickets will be available on www.ticketek.com soon! I am very pleased to congratulate Rachael Rozengurt and Talia Wijesinghe (Year 6) on achieving high distinctions in the ICAS English Writing Competition. They were both placed in the top 1% of the candidates in Year 6 countrywide which is a truly fantastic achievement. Reddam also had ten students receive distinctions, being placed in the top 10% of their year group In Australia. These students are Rosa Gordos and Sofia Weilder from Year 3, Ryan Chong,Isander Mesimeris and Maxim Nechiporenko in Year 4, Zara Rubinsztein in Year 5, and Sam Cleary, Bianca Lieberfreund, Julian Markworth-Scott and Kai Mashimo from Year 6. Very well done to all these students. Furthermore, I would like to congratulate Anthea Kasses and Jada Cooper who took part in the Waratah Junior Basketball State Cup in Newcastle. Although their team did not win, the girls did themselves, our school and New South Wales proud at the competition where they gave their best effort, despite illness. It is a huge achievement to have made it to that level of competition and we are all very proud of them. Last weekend was also a landmark event for our under 12s netball team. Having entered into their first season of competition, the team has improved tremendously every week and last week, all their hard work paid off as they won their match 5 – 4 against the All Saints! Congratulations, girls! The first win is always the toughest. Next week, we will see our athletes take to the track and field at the Athletics Carnival on Tuesday, 27 August. The day is brimful with sprints, middle distance races, shot-put, high jump and long jump events. The students always enjoy the day and I invite parents and caregivers to come and join in the fun. The parents’ race always has the most number of entrants with some healthy competitive spirit, so leave your heels at home and bring your runners! I look forward to seeing you on Sunday at Open Day and hope you will share in some re- freshments with us on the rooftop at 1pm. Dee Pitcairn Principal

On Wednesday, Kindy went to visit Golden Ridge Farm at Dural. What a day we had! After a long and winding journey to the farm, the children were relieved to get off the bus and excited to see some ani-mals. The children sat on stacks of straw in the barn and held chicks, ducklings and kittens (the rabbit kind). Then they met some hungry lambs and kids! The children were all given a chance to bottle feed the lambs and kids, and they were surprised that such little animals could be so strong. After the chil-dren ate their own lunch, they fed the goats, sheep, deer, lamas, alpacas and cows some lunch. Be-fore we made our way back to school, all of the children were given a chance to milk Daisy the cow. The children had a fantastic day and learnt so much about the animals on the farm and what they need to grow healthy and strong.

For the last few weeks, Year 1R have being doing their HSIE presentations on Shelters. The teach-ers have been so impressed with the standard of work produced. We have seen many amazing post-ers, models and PowerPoint’s. More importantly the children are learning from each other and doing some fantastic peer and self-assessment. We have also learnt about; tepees and hogan’s, different kinds of tents, boathouses, apartments, castles, igloos, the similarity between natural (caves) and manmade shelters, magnetic termite hills and beehives. We even got to taste some honey which was delicious! Well done 1R, your presenta-tions have been informative, fun and interactive. We look forward to the rest of the HSIE presenta-tions that are still to come this term.

Yesterday Year 2 went on an excursion to Walkabout World. It is a wildlife park just outside of Sydney, Where we took part in lots of fun activities. The first thing our group did was throw some Aboriginal painted boomerangs. The ranger, Adam, showed us how to throw it so that it would come back, but only a few of us were successful. Next we went for a walk around the park and looked at some animals. We saw emus, Tasmanian Devils, Dia-mond Pythons, a talking cockatoo, wallabies and echidnas. Ranger Adam told us stories about how the ani-mals got their features. After we ate some lunch, we went and had a look at some rockpools and learned all about how the Aboriginals used water to cook and clean. However the geese were so noisy and there was a long-neck turtle living in one of the rockpools! Then we learnt about bush medicine and made soap out of plants and water. This is how the Aboriginals treat-ed their sick and kept clean. Finally, we got to eat some termites! They tasted like wood! We scraped them off the tree using a stick then ate them. It was good bush tucker! We had an outstanding and educational time at Walkabout World. We learned so much about the Australian environment and the animals that depend on it.

This year’s Music Camp was a huge success with Year 3. The children had a wonderful time being with their friends and this was their first school camp away from their families. The tears soon disappeared on Day One with so much to do. There were music rehearsals, choir practise, delicious morning teas, after-noon activities, eating in the huge dining room (with so much food to choose) and of course the opportuni-ty to bunk with friends in the cabins! There were also many talented children who performed in the evening talent quest, we were so proud of them all! The flying fox activity proved to be a great hit and there were so many brave children ‘flying’ down the hill, laughing and having the best time. Well done to all of Year 3!

The Reddam House Year 4 students have been completely focused during this last week concentrat-ing on their studies, their music and that bulls eye?! The Year 4 students thoroughly enjoyed all that Music Camp had to offer, including the outdoor activi-ties provided by the Collaroy Centre. Archery was one such activity which captured the students at-tention and nurtured their focus and discipline. The instructor introduced this historical art step by step to the willing and eager Year 4 students. They were then given a number of practice shots to familiar-ise themselves with the correct way to hold and shoot an arrow. Year 4’s were then away! They were equipped with the correct techniques and skills to participate in (and excel in) a variety of games vary-ing in difficulty. The children’s accuracy and enjoyment of this ancient practice truly amazed me as the modern bow is not a light object! Well done Year 4, you certainly demonstrated you have what it takes to hit the mark! Keep on giving it your best!

Reddam House School has been enjoying the new play equipment on the playground this week. We have giant chess, giant jenga, hoops, stilts, scoop balls, pattern blocks and ring toss – just to name a few! Playground time is an opportunity for students to let off some steam, run around and relax. Ac-cess to toys and games helps strengthen student’s gross motor skills, team work and social skill development.

A keen bunch of adrenalin junkies from Year 3 to Year 6 have braved the cold winter months and continued surfing every Wednesday afternoon at Bondi Beach. Even though the cold can sometimes make paddling a bit harder, all of the students have fun with the instructors from Let’s Go Surf and Mr Crowhurst. Students are taught the techniques of how to catch waves and stand up as well as how to remain safe in the water. Look out for Reddam children carving the waves up the next time you’ve at Bondi Beach!
