The Challenge: “Why can’t PLM…”
Be as intuitive as an Internet search engine
Support predictive search suggestions
Filter data as easily as an e-Commerce site
Perform nearly all transactions in < 2 seconds
Present data in familiar terms with obvious relationships, not the way the data is modeled
Bring the functionality to the user instead of having them “Send” data to the right application
Enable customers to add new capabilities without having to upgrade to a major new version
Delivery a revolutionary user experience
Support all modern browsers on all modern devices / platforms with “zero client install”

TilesHome page tiles
Tiles are short cuts to commonlyused Locations, Data, and Actions• Locations: Search, Inbox, Changes• Actions: Create Part, Create Doc• Data: Parts, Docs, Saved Search
Tiles are really just “smart” URL’s• They can go to Active Workspace
locations, and external weblocations
The Home Page should be personal• Users can group and arrange them
how they want• Users can pin new things and
remove others

TilesOrganizing home page tiles
Tiles are delivered to the users inTile Collections:• Tile Collections control which tiles
a user has:• Site + Group + Role + Project +
User• Just a collection – doesn’t affect
how things are arranged in the UI
Tiles are displayed in Tile Groups• Tile Groups are sets of tiles on the
screen• Groups can have tiles from different
Collections• Users can create their own Groups• This is what you see on the page

TilesCreate tiles
Provide the users with simple tiles to create the things theywork with most
You can create new tiles to create almost anything• Documents, Parts, Tools, Change Orders, Forms…
Use the OOTB Tile Templates to create new tiles for your types• Create Part – simple create• Modify the tile command and change the argument:
https://tcrevolution.com/awc/#com.siemens.splm......commands.CreateObject;cmdArg=Part Please, NEVER use

SearchWhat do we Search for?
Focus is on Revisions• Give the user the one correct revision of any business object
using Rev Rules• Use the History tab to find other revisions
We are not indexing Items or Forms OOTB• Don’t make the user search for Items, and then hunt for the
right Revision…• If forms have critical data, compound it to the Revision
and index it there. Don’t make users navigate to the form.• If there are multiple forms, display them in a table
Don’t call things “Items”• Use real names like Parts, Tools, Change Orders…
Precise = All Revs
Only One Revision of Each Part found
Tip: You can search for any workspace object – you just need to configure it first

SearchTechniques to help users search more effectively
Don’t try to get an exact hit – just try to get down to a page of results
You probably don’t need to define which property a keyword is in• Engine Jamie Pending will get you pretty close.• If not close enough, add more keywords:
engine jamie part pending June 2015
You don’t have to specify exact words:• Try using parts of words to get close:
Req spec mclau qual eng• Let wildcarding help you
Tip: The more keywords you enter – even partial words – the closer you will get!
Restricted © Siemens AG 2016
26.10.2016Page 52 Siemens PLM Software
#SEU16
SearchUpdated for 3.2
Control how search handles partial words• AWC_search_automatic_wildcard
Valid options for the preference are:• 0: user search criteria are not altered• 1: search engine will suffix * to all words: motor driveà motor* drive*• 2: search engine will prefix * to all words: motor driveà *motor *drive• 3: search engine will prefix and suffix * to all words: motor driveà *motor* *drive*
Previously this preference was shared with the Rich Client.• This new preference allows RAC to continue to work without wildcards,
and Active Workspace to work with them.
With Auto-wildcarding ON, you can still force an exact match bywrapping your keywords in quotations:• “part” will avoid parts, apart, partition…
Please don’t make userssearch for *motor* !
Tip: Leave this set at the default of 1.This gives the best performance

Property specific search
SearchProperty specific search (2.4+)
Build property specific search criteriausing the display names:• Name:retainer• Name:“Spare Wheel Retainer”
Display names with spaces need quotes• “Owning user”:john• “Owning user”:“john smith”
Combine property-specific and generalsearch criteria• Name:retainer frd
Use multiple properties• Name:retainer ID:hdd
Property specific search matchesdisplay first in results order
Find everything that has“retainer” in the Name property
Find everything that has“retainer” in the Name property
Tip: Give your properties single-wordnames to make it easer to specify them

SearchFilters
Search Filters and Order can beconfigured to fit your data• Objects and File types to index• Attributes to Index• Attributes to use as Filters• Priority (Order) of Filters
Filters are displayed dynamically• For the current result set, display
common filters, in filter order• If the results do not include a
particular filter, it isn’t displayed

SearchPre-Filters
Pre-filters are a simple way for users to “focus” on things morerelevant to them.• I only want to see things in My Group…• I only work with Requirements…
Pre-filters are simply applying a search Filter• They appear selected in the filter panel• You can un-select them in the filter panel to expand your results
Uses Preferences• AWS_SearchPreFilter_Property1• AWS_SearchPreFilter_Property1
Can be different by Group, Role…

SearchCategory – AW 3.2
Use categories of types to simplify searching
• Search and filter by a category of object types,e.g. “Parts”, “Documents”, and “Changes” where“Parts” may include Vendor Parts, CommercialParts, Parts, Custom Parts, etc.
• Replaced “Type” pre-filter with “Category” OOTB
• Define new and update existing categoriesusing business constant in BMIDE or directlyupdate the preference it generatesAW_FullTextSearch_TypeCategories
• The same object type can belong to multiplecategories
Filter by Category

#SEU16
SearchGlobal Revision Rules (3.1+)
OOTB, AW will show all revision rules a user has access to• This may be a very long list, and many may not be appropriate
for Global Search – they are Structure Revision Rules
New Preference: AWC_Rev_Rule_List• Create a shorter list of rev rules that work for global search• Empty by default – AW uses all rev rules in TC• Recommended:
• Latest Working• Any Status; Working
New Preference: AW_Rev_Rule_Selected• Set the default rev rule for Active Workspace.• Without this, the first in the list is selected.

SearchSuggestions
By default Solr suggests only words that appear more than 0.5%of the total keywords. This is to keep misspellings from beingsuggested.
If you are not getting enough suggestions, try lowering thethreshold
Defined in the Solr Configuration File• Navigate to the solrconfig.xml file in your Solr installation
directory, for example:• …\awc\solr\collection1\conf\solrconfig.xml
• Scroll to the bottom of the solrconfig.xml file and look for thefollowing line:• <float name=threshold”>0.005</float>
• Save file and restart Solr Search the Deployment Guide: “suggestions”
Part Numbers are typically verylow frequency
– One in Several Million –So won’t usually get suggested

SearchClassification
To a User, Classification is justmore useful information• They shouldn’t have to go to a
different place to use it
Users can Search and Filter onClassification attributes along withall other attributes
Saved Searches can include bothClassification and Core attributes

#SEU16
CreatePrinciples
Keep Create simple and quick• Everything I need to do should be clearly visible on the panel
Focus Create on the minimum fields needed to create the object –• Required fields and common desired fields• Keep it to about one page, all on the screen
Use Edit for all the details• Keep create to a minimum – quick and easy• Use Edit to complete the details
After Create Enter Edit Mode• Open it and edit for the rest
Restricted © Siemens AG 2016
26.10.2016Page 68 Siemens PLM Software
#SEU16
CreatePrinciples
Generally Create in Context• Don’t just create for the sake of creating, you
create in a context and therefore can limit choicesand tailor the experience
• By creating in context, the relationships arecreated automatically
• Reduce or eliminate creating “loose” objects andstitching them back up
Add to Tables• Help the user focus on the “what”, not the “how”• The Section name describes what goes there• The action is always just Add• It only adds what it is supposed to – no mistakes
Since the table is calledDocuments, the Add button must
be how you put one in there!

TEM enforces supported upgrades• New functionality is being accelerated into Service Packs• This allows our customers to stay at a particular release for
a longer period of time without having to upgrade to the nextmajor release to pick up new features
• Eventually our customers will need to upgrade to the nextmajor release
• Our customers will want to upgrade to a SP in the nextmajor release stream that has the same data model andbehaviors of their current version
• This is called a “Supported Upgrade Path”• TEM ensures that your upgrade is compatible with the
supported upgrade path• Benefits
• Ensures there is no regression in features, behavior, datamodel
