Setting Up, Sorting Out and Settling In

I have nothing but praise for the staff, parents and students of Boondall State School this week. What a team effort! You have worked together to set up, sort out and settle in to week one of a very new way to learn.

We have seen RISE in action at BSS! Resilience, Independence, Safety and Effort from both the adults and children in our community. There have been ups and downs with all things technology but children have demonstrated patience, kindness and creative problem solving. In these tricky times they are learning valuable lifelong skills that will stand them in good stead for what may be even more difficult circumstances as they move through life’s challenges. We need to continue to focus on what is important right now – health and wellbeing. Families need to be kind to themselves and do what they can in these circumstances. We are here to help. Make sure that you drop emails to teachers if you need, ask for help through the KIT team (11.15-12.45 each day) or email [email protected] for tech support. Words of thanks and praise coming through from the community make all the difference to our very hard working staff. Thank you to all the families who have sent in lovely words emails and messages. Let’s continue to celebrate the unique and wonderful things we are all doing, especially what you are doing at home. We would love to share any photos you have for your learning@home experiences. If you are happy to share your ideas with the community on Facebook and Instagram please send through to the office or my email.

Frequently Asked Questions – Round Two : Learning At Home Can I send my child to school? We need to be very clear WHY we have the current measures in place. Children in designated indigenous communities. What happens at school? Supervision only is provided to students who attend by whatever staff members are scheduled. This can be teacher aides or members of the year level team. Students must be in full school uniform. At this stage no tuckshop is available so brain break, lunch and a water bottle must be provided each day. We will keep you up to date if tuckshop arrangements do change. Normal school hours and break time apply. Playground equipment is currently off limits and open air areas are used for play. Social distancing and hygiene measures are in place. How many hours should my child be spending on schoolwork per day? Remember you are supporting learning at home, not home-schooling. Work around your families’ schedule. Each day there are daily routines – about 10 mins each, and an English /Maths and Connected Curriculum activity – about 30-45 mins each. Teachers online lessons will support that day’s learning. Teachers will be providing 3 online support lessons in English and Maths, 1 reading and 1 Connected Curriculum lesson each week. Mr Ree will be supporting in a range of ways to continue ideas for exercise and Physical Education. Specialists have given other support materials to complete if you wish. If you are finishing early, check out additional material at the learning@home site. If it is taking way longer than that, check in with your teacher to discuss. We don’t want stressed children or stressed parents. There is much greater life learning to be had right now! Does my child need to submit all work to their class teacher? If so, how? Teachers will be sending an email with information about the plans we have to track and monitor student progress by the end of this week. This will include what and how to send material back to the teacher whether you are working online or offline. What if I don't understand the work my child has been given? Please email your class teacher for further clarification. As they may experience a large volume of emails, it may take 24-48 hours to respond to your question. We recommend you “Google” unknown maths terminology as you will easily find a video explaining the concept for your information. Don’t forget the KIT team is available from 11.15-12.45 every day to help out with any queries like this. What if I am offline? Offline packs are printed ready for Monday collection each week. PLEASE ENSURE YOU COLLECT BETWEEN 8.00-8.30 am.

This week we had a significant number of parents request offline packs. We absolutely understand that difficulties with online access might have changed your initial plans. That is no problem but please indicate to your class teacher, if you haven’t already, your preference for an offline pack for week 2.

They are printed and labelled with each child’s name each week. We don’t want to overload the office staff with having to print extra copies throughout the week, nor do we want additional adults on the school grounds and in the office throughout the day. In order to manage the health and safety risks – PLEASE COLLECT IN THE ALLOCATED WINDOW 8.00 – 8.30 AM MONDAY

What if I am having technical issues? Send an email to [email protected] and staff will endeavour to support you asap. Please try to avoid emailing teachers about technical issues. A lot of these issues can’t be fixed by teachers

and we want teachers to focus on preparing materials for the following week, supervising onsite students, contacting @homelearners and running virtual class sessions. They have a lot to do every day.

Students to stay safe online at home

As classes temporarily shift to an online learning environment at home, it is important children continue to have a safe and positive online experience. Stay safe online at home These simple steps will help protect your children as they move to learning online at home. 1. Check who people are Remind your child that sometimes people pretend to be someone they’re not, even using profile pictures from real people’s accounts. Just because it looks like the profile of someone they know, doesn’t mean it is. It’s best to check whether a profile is legitimate before accepting friend requests or messages. 2. Be responsible and positive Make sure your child never shares personal information online, such as their school, address, date of birth, phone number or location. Remind your child to think before sharing any posts, images or messages online. All posts should be positive, useful and true to present themselves in a positive way and avoid hurting other people. 3. Install internet filtering at home To protect your child when they are connected to your home internet, consider installing some form of filtering or parental controls. There are many options available, including free and paid products where some cover a single device and others cover multiple devices. The eSafety Commissioner’s Taming the technology has more information. 4. Talk about technology use This is a great time to continue having open discussions about their technology use and reassure your child that they can talk to you if they have a negative experience online. Need more information? Visit the eSafety Commissioner’s website (esafety.gov.au/parents) or the Queensland Government’s cybersafety pages (qld.gov.au/cybersafety).

In 2020 our Boondall School Community will not be able to commemorate ANZAC day as we have in the past. For those families who are looking for ways to ensure their children still learn about the importance of this event try use this link which has resources suitable for primary students. http://anzacportal.dva.gov.au/resources/here-they-come-day-remember Your family might like to participate in the Light Up the Dawn RSL event, visit this link for more information on this wonderful initiative https://rslqld.org/News/Latest-News/Light-up-the-Dawn Please send photos of your celebrations and commemorations and, with your permission, we will post them on our Boondall State School Facebook page. Please note: If your child is in your photos please complete the new consent form attached to this email. Perhaps you can bake some ANZAC biscuits, dress up your fence with homemade wreaths and poppies, or even decorate the footpath with chalk drawing of poppies and Lest We Forget signs. The Boondall Facebook page will have some short videos to watch too. Let’s make sure the Boondall State School community makes time to remember this significant event.

This week has been a week of NEW LEARNING for our whole school community. Some have embraced this journey, some have found it easy to navigate through all the ‘NEW’ and some have decided to hit ‘Pause’ in order to maintain their sanity. When faced with NEW LEARNING at Boondall State School, the teachers discuss with the students that everyone will proceed through

the Learning Pit in order to achieve success. During this learning process the students are encouraged to use Growth Mindset language when faced with challenges and reminded that the path to success is not always straight forward. As our school community finds itself on this new learning journey, it is hoped the whole school community can action these 3 ideas:

discuss what happens in the Learning Pit as a family,

adopt the Growth Mindset language and

remember the path to success is not

always straight forward.

By using these 3 ideas in our daily lives, our whole school community will face these challenges together and achieve SUCCESS!! .

READING PRIZES! I can assure you that learning from home WILL NOT stop Boondall students from earning their Home Reading Prizes. Before the holidays I received boxes and boxes of vortexes, bags and books. Make sure you keep filling in your home reading log each time that you complete 10 minute of reading in one day.

The Performing Arts, like many areas have been adapted in these days of isolation. I've really enjoyed watching performances online and thought that you may want to watch some too. Please make sure that if you want to watch these with your children that you check and reflect that all content is appropriate before showing your children. "The Shows Must Go On!" is a YouTube channel which is showing a different Andrew Lloyd Webber Musical each week. There are many talented performers who have been doing performances live from home. The Sydney Opera House has released a "Digital Season" which includes many streamed and on demand performances. You will find some great orchestra performances and contemporary dance, here. Music and The Arts continue to provide relief, joy and peace in these uncertain times, so keep making music and enjoy! Mrs Spooner Music Co-Ordinator Being in isolation - we have been calling cousins, aunties and uncles a lot more. We, like many of you - had planned holidays visiting our family. I hope that you are finding ways to stay connected. Please be aware that NAIDOC Week has been postponed NATIONALLY with a new date yet to be confirmed. Like most things, we are unsure of what this will look like. If you have any information, ideas or feedback please email me on [email protected]. The theme is "Always Was, Always Will Be". I stumbled upon "Moongahlin Performing Arts" on Facebook. They are doing live streams throughout the week with different performances and other First Nations workshops (like weaving, wood carving and tool making). I watched "Kids Sing-a-long" with Sharni McDermott and Marcus Corowa as Marcus is a cousin and my little one enjoyed dancing along to music. Please feel free to email me or call the school if you have seen other workshops and performances that we can watch from home to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Culture. Some school activities and physical education, particularly contact sports, carry inherent risks of injury. Parents are advised that the Department of Education and Training does not have Student Accident Insurance cover for students.

If your child is injured at school as a result of an accident or incident, all costs associated with the injury, including medical costs, are the responsibility of the child, parent or caregiver. Some incidental medical costs may be covered by Medicare. If parents have private health insurance, some costs may also be covered through the private health insurance. Any other costs would be borne by the parents. Student Accident Insurance is an insurance policy that pays certain benefits in certain circumstances should your child have an accident. It is a personal decision for parents as to the types and levels of private insurance they arrange to cover their child for any accidental injury that may occur. Parents should contact their insurer or an approved Australian insurance broker for more information about student personal accident insurance cover for their child CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS OVER PHONE

The school office will no longer be able to accept credit card payments over the phone. Instead,

you will be required to phone a secure payment portal (BPoint IVR) to make payments to the

school. The phone number for BPoint IVR is 1300 631 073 and you will need the CRN (included

on all our invoices) and the invoice number to complete the payment.

Details relating to this new facility are included on all of our invoices. Please note that there is no

change to the school accepting EFTPOS or credit card payments over the counter at the office.

This change only affects credit card payments made over the phone.

Need a Justice of the Peace? Just call in to TAIGUM SHOPPING CENTRE

Our Justice of the Peace service is available three days per week, each Monday, Thursday and Friday from 9.30am – 11.30am. They are located near The Coffee Club.

Welcome back to term 2, though it be somewhat different to what we are used to. We hope this finds all our school families healthy, happy and safe. As we all adjust to these new times, we ourselves in the P&C will also adjust how we do things. 1. Our next P&C meeting is scheduled for Monday, 18 May 2020. Like most things in our lives

presently, we will be moving to an online format. A link to the meeting will be sent out closer to the date. This may be a great opportunity for you to join in on a meeting if you have never been able to make it to one before.

2. Fundraising – whilst we are limited to what we can still continue to do, we would still like to honour those special people in our lives as we approach Mother’s Day. We usually hold a Mother’s Day stall and would still like to offer the opportunity for children and families to shop from our special store. We will be creating an online store in flexischools for you to purchase goods and offer a collection day to pick up your purchases. Further details will come out in a newsflash next week.

That’s all for now, but if you have any questions or suggestions and need to get in contact with the P&C, please feel free to email us [email protected] or come to our next P&C meeting in May. In the meantime, stay Happy.
