Meditation: "I Am the Light of the World"

We are in the middle of our Lenten journey and interrupted by the challenge of the coronavirus. However, Lent remains an intense time for those who prepare to receive the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, and first communion on Easter. It is also a favorable time for all of us who have already been baptized. During this time, the readings invite us to reflect and ponder upon the meaning of being baptized; it is an invitation to see how we are living our baptism and what it means to be a baptized person. The Sacrament of Baptism introduces us to the life of grace; this means that God makes us participants of his divine life through the action of the Holy Spirit who works through sacramental symbols: water, light, oil, the Word of God that we read, the priest and the child. Last Sunday, the readings presented to us the elements of water and Spirit. This Sunday, the readings present to us the elements of light and oil.

In today's gospel, we find the story of a man blind from birth. Physical blindness is related to sin in the time of Jesus. The disciples ask him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" Jesus says that none of them has sinned. "Neither he nor his parents sinned; it is so that the works of God might be made visible through him." Jesus came into the world to do the works of his Father while it is daytime. Night comes and no one works anymore. With this, Jesus proclaims himself, "I am the light of the world". The world lives in darkness, in the darkness of sin, and needs the light of God. Lent is the time that helps us to raise awareness of the light, the grace of God, which we receive on the day of our baptism. On that day, the priest gives the light of Christ through our parents and godparents. The godparent lights the candle from the Paschal Candle. The priest says, "Receive the light of Christ. Parents and godparents, this light is entrusted to you to be kept burning brightly. This child of yours has been enlightened by Christ. He (she) is to walk always as a child of the light. May he (she) keep the flame of faith alive in his (her) heart. When the Lord comes, may he (she) go out to meet him with all the saints in the heavenly kingdom." The grace received in baptism is the light of God that illuminates our walking in faith. If we have the light of faith, we allow Jesus to be the center of our lives, and as we live as light of Christ, we can say with all confidence: I am the light of my family, of society and of the world. To be the light of Christ is to bear witness that He lives in our hearts, that we allow ourselves to be guided by his Light, which is also the light of the Holy Spirit. While we are going through a time of uncertainty, the light of our faith can be a source of peace of mind and heart. It is time to reject the darkness of sin and to choose the light of Christ that we have received on the day of our baptism. To walk in the light of Christ is to walk in truth, in love, in mercy, in the joy of the sons and daughters of God. By living these virtues daily, one may stand firm in faith and in the state of God’s grace. Grace is always a source of trust and strength; it empowers our human nature to grow in holiness and enables us to face the challenges of life and temptations of sin. Sin causes us to lose the grace of God's

light in our souls. If one commits a sin, it is recommended to confess the sin as soon as possible to regain the light of God’s grace through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Jesus says, "I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see might see, and those who do see might become blind". Confessing our sins is an act of humility and of God’s grace. As baptized, we are called to be sons and daughters of Light; we receive this calling by Christ our Lord and the Holy Spirit.

Now, let us see the element of oil. In the first reading, we heard the story of David, son of Jesse, being anointed by the prophet Samuel. The Lord asked Samuel to go to the house of Jesse in Bethlehem, because from his sons God had chosen the new king. "Fill your horn with oil and be on your way". Jesse had eight children. Samuel came to know seven of them, but none of them were to the Lord's liking. He asked if there were more. Jesse replied, “There is still the youngest, who is tending the sheep”. Samuel said to Jesse, “Send for him”. The boy was ruddy, a youth handsome to behold and making a splendid appearance". The Lord said, “There, anoint him, for this is the one. Then Samuel, with the horn of oil in hand, anointed David in the presence of his brothers; and from that day on, the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David". In the Old Testament, only prophets and kings were anointed with oil to signify that these people were chosen for God’s service. Oil was the visible sign to point the Spirit of God in the person anointed. When we are baptized, the priest also anoints us with the oil of the catechumens and Holy Chrism. In each of these anointings, the priest says a prayer. "Almighty and ever-living God, you sent your only Son into the world to cast out the power of Satan, spirit of evil, to rescue man from the kingdom of darkness, and bring him into the splendor". After the child is baptized with water, the priest anoints him/her with holy Chrism, saying: "God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has freed you from sin, given you a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit and welcomed you into this holy people. He now anoints you with the chrism of salvation. As Christ was anointed Priest, Prophet, and King, so may you live always as a member of his body, sharing everlasting life". God is awesome! The grace of baptism really makes us sons and daughters of God; we participate in his mystery of salvation. He communicates to us the light of his Love and Mercy and anoints us with the grace of the Holy Spirit through sacramental signs. We not only share in his divine light but also in the Priesthood of Christ, Prophet and King. This is what we receive in baptism and what it means to be baptized. We receive all these graces in order to live as sons and daughters of God, loving and serving him in our brothers and sisters.

Prayer: Psalm 27

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear? The LORD is my life’s refuge; of whom should I be the afraid? One thing I ask of the LORD; this I seek: To dwell in the LORD’s house all the days of my life, to gaze on the LORD’s beauty, to visit his temple. The LORD is my light and my salvation.

D e l e s c r i t o r i o d e l P .

Tu rostro buscaré, Señor; no me escondas tu rostro. El Señor es

The refrain ‘Jesus Salvador de los hombres Salvalos! Salvalos!’

Jesus savior of all mankind save us! Save us! resounded throughout the beautiful Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City on May 4, 2019. From where I was seated, in the high balcony overlooking the assembly with other members of the Apostleship of the Cross from SEAS, I listened entranced watching the procession of clergy into the Basilica for the Mass of Beatification. It seemed endless and included Angelo Becciu, the representative of Pope Francis, Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops, Missionaries of the Holy Spirit, and Monks in a variety of habits. As Mass began, I thought about Maria de la Concepcion Cabrera, this beautiful Mexican woman, who was being celebrated. This woman, whom I had dismissed as unimportant to me when I first heard her name after joining SEAS Parish, was now being celebrated as Blessed by the universal Church. I thought now of the impact she had made on my life in that interval. I had come to respect and love her and had travelled to Mexico City although I ‘met’ her only through books and our Pilgrimage Group’s visit with Father Jose to Alta Vista where Conchita died at the Convent of her Sisters of the Cross of the Sacred Heat of Jesus. I knelt in that room and reverenced the relic of her blood on the floorboards from the time of her death in 1937. Believe me, I had trouble breathing. It was as if Conchita was holding me to that spot; she was very much present in that room. I actually told Sister Angelica I would stay on as a gardener and pray with them just to be close to Conchita. I was serious but, of course, she laughed and told me, ‘Conchita has work for you to do elsewhere.’

I asked myself why Conchita had such a hold on me ---appealed to me so much? I think I loved that she was an ordinary woman who had married and had nine children. She was no different from you or me. She did household tasks, raised children, and taught children at the hacienda at San Luis to read and about Christ. Like us, she experienced great suffering. Her husband, Pancho, died after 17 years of marriage leaving her to care for the family and finances on her own, and along the way she lost children in death. She lived at a time of Revolution and danger in Mexico –a time when life was hard, but she had fallen in Love with Christ at an early age, and she carried that love of the Lord into her marriage. She found time to pray and talk to the Lord as if He were her best friend, and indeed He was. Conchita was ordinary and yet very extraordinary. She was a mystic, who was comfortably intimate with Christ, such that when she asked Him to walk with her in the Hacienda Garden at Jesus Maria, He did just that. She could feel His presence beside her and hear Him talk to her. As the tones of ‘Cante La Tierra!’ wafted upwards, I thought of this woman who lived so intently and whose love could not be held inside but spilled out into service of others. She is such a model for all lay people showing us how to live purposefully and open our hearts to the Lord allowing Him to guide us.

Créanme, me costaba respirar.

a mí.

A WAITING HARVEST Vocation Awareness

Signs of a Vocation to Priesthood

and Characteristics of a Good Candidate

O Jesus, Our Eternal Pastor, Deign to look with merciful eyes Upon this part of your loving flock.

Lord, we need a large number of priests, and men and women consecrated to the religious life. Multiply vocations, And sanctify more and more our priests, And those consecrated in the religious life.

We ask you all this through the Immaculate Virgin Mary of Guadalupe, your sweet and holy Mother.

Jesus give us priests according to your heart.

Jesus, savior of all people, save them, save them!

For information on becoming a Religious Priest Missionary of the Holy Spirit or a Diocesan Priest contact one of the following people:

Serra Club: Arthur Adams

Priests: Fr. Jose Ugalde, M.Sp.S. Fr. Jesus Sanchez, M.Sp.S.

7. A man who is called to become a priest will

find his calling validated in Sacred Scripture. I can remember one fellow telling me, “Father, I have

stopped reading the Bible.” I responded. “What? You can’t do that. The Bible is God’s word. Why did you stop?” he told me “Because every time I open it up, it talks about priesthood. And I don’t want to hear it.”

The Bible is the living word of God and speaks to us. Many of the saints found their vocation by reading a single line from Scripture. For St. Francis of Assisi, it was the words of Jesus to the rich young man from Matthew 19:21 “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” St. Francis never looked back. He gave away everything and followed Christ as he understood the call at that time in his life. For St. Augustine, who had a very difficult and long journey coming to Christ, it was Romans 13:14: “Put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provisions for the desires of the flesh.” I think St. Augustine can be a great patron saint of a man’s discernment, as he really struggled with chastity and

indecision. For Saint Teresa of Calcutta, it was the words of Jesus from the cross in John 19:28: “I thirst”

Don’t play “Bible bingo.” Maybe you have heard of it before. Bible Bingo is when a man asks the Lord a question and then closes his eyes, opens his Bible and puts down his finger on a page. Whatever verse he reads, according to this unwise practice, is God’s answer. I do not recommend that you ask Jesus if he wants you to become a priest and then play “Bible Bingo” for the answer.

Sacred Scripture is the living power of God. It has the power to change a man’s life, to shake his world, to re-route the course of his life. Praying with the Sacred Scriptures is critical in vocational discernment. Don’t be

afraid. Fear is always from Satan, who does not want anyone to read the Bible! At the same time, not everyone who looks to Scripture will immediately find the validation of a priestly vocation. God just as easily can use Scripture to convey to a man that he is not called to be a priest.

H oly Mary, we come before you as spiritual children in great need, seeking

your intercession, and asking that your mantle of love surround us to console, protect, and lead us to your son Jesus.

We entrust all of God’s family, especially the church in Western Washington, into your immaculate hands. With your son Jesus’ gentle power you can undo any knot in our church, and in the lives of believers who entrust themselves to your care.

Today I especially entrust to you [mention request / Coronavirus here], and I ask that—through your intercession, and that of St. james, our guardian angels, and the faithful in our archdiocese—we may be free from every spiritual and temporal ill, and be safely led to encounter your son’s merciful, sacred heart.

Our Lady of Seattle, Undoer of Knots, pray for us!
