The University

HISTORYThe Sisters of Charity founded Seton Hill in 1883, first as a boys’ preparatory school and then as a residential Academy for girls. It was chartered as a four-year college for women in 1918 and accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools in 1921 (continuously reaffirmed through 2016). In 2002, Seton Hill was granted University status by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and officially became a coeducational institution in that same year.

Today, Seton Hill offers more than 80 undergraduate programs, 12 graduate programs, adult degree programs, and several certificate programs. Through established partnerships and formal articulation-degree programs, students can earn an undergraduate degree from Seton Hill and an advanced degree from another institution, including the University of Pittsburgh (engineering), Salus University (audiology or optometry), or the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (dentistry, pharmacy, or medicine).

Enrollment has nearly doubled in the last two decades (from 1,115 students in 1998 to 2,072 in 2018). Students hail from 43 states and 14 foreign countries, with 75% of the undergraduate class from households within southwestern Pennsylvania. The student population is comprised of 65% females, 28% first-generation, and 19% minorities, significant considering the 5% minority rate in Westmoreland County, where Seton Hill is located. An additional 400 medical students are enrolled in the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine at its satellite location established on Seton Hill’s campus in 2009.

For over fifty years, the University has benefited from a

federal Department of Education TRIO/Student Support Services grant – one of the nation’s inaugural programs – that provides academic support, financial literacy, graduate school exploration, summer bridge program and financial support for disadvantaged students whose chances for success are hampered by their social, economic, cultural, and/or educational backgrounds.

In 2009, the University was approved as a Division II NCAA institution and currently offers 21 athletic programs for men and women. Seton Hill is a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference with a membership of 18 institutions, mainly comprised of mid-sized public colleges and universities.

Community outreach plays an important role in the University’s efforts to contribute to the health and wellbeing of the residents in the city of Greensburg and its surrounding areas, including:

– The Center for Orthodontics, the University’s teaching facility that provides orthodontic care to over 2,400 indigent and low-income patients in southwestern Pennsylvania.

– The Community Arts Program, where community residents receive artistic development in dance and music by Seton Hill’s qualified instructors, and the

– The Seton Arts Service Corps, a collaboration with the Sisters of Charity and Seton Hill art students to facilitate Saturday youth art programs for underserved children in urban neighborhoods.

– The Child Development Center at Seton Hill, the only accredited program for preschool age children in Westmoreland County.

HISTORY – The National Catholic Center for Holocaust Education

(NCCHE) provides scholarship and education on the root causes of antisemitism, its relation to the Holocaust, and the implications from the Catholic perspective of both for today’s world.

– The Wukich Center for Entrepreneurial Opportunities provides support and education for entrepreneurial activities on campus and initial capital for approved student businesses.

In the last decade, Seton Hill invested over $100 million in a campus expansion plan to accommodate steadily growing enrollment and new academic programming that aligns with regional workforce needs. The most recently completed is the JoAnne Woodyard Boyle Health Sciences Center which opened Fall 2015 and houses the University’s fastest growing undergraduate programs.

In 2009, Seton Hill’s 200-acre hilltop campus expanded into the heart of Greensburg’s cultural and historic district with the

opening of the Performing Arts Center, followed in 2015 by the addition of the Seton Hill Arts Center. These facilities provide performance and exhibition space inside and outside the Seton Hill community and assist in the revitalization and economic growth of the city. A new 145 bed residence hall is scheduled to open in Fall of 2019.

Seton Hill has achieved an operating budget surplus for 21 consecutive years and continues to maintain its fiscal stability through enrollment growth and sound fundraising campaigns. The University’s $40 million endowment has grown by $20 million in the last decade – a 100% increase. Seton Hill also provides cultural resources and enrichment and acts as a partner in economic development.

In 2014, the University produced 843 jobs and had a total economic impact of more than $70.5 million, according to an analysis conducted by the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP).

Leadership

PRESIDENTMary C. Finger, Ed.D., began her tenure as Seton Hill’s tenth president in June 2014. Under her leadership, Seton Hill has initiated a number of new programs to enhance the university’s already robust academic offerings, including:

– The Office of Academic Innovation and Planning, through faculty work with community and business leaders to develop new academic programs that align with the Pittsburgh region’s workforce needs;

– Expanding student opportunities for experiential learning through study abroad, internships and student research and working to enhance career readiness preparation through its nationally-recognized Fit for the World program; and

– Opening two new academic buildings in 2015: the JoAnne Woodyard Boyle Health Sciences Center on Seton Hill’s main campus and the Seton Hill Arts Center in downtown Greensburg. A new residence hall is slated to open in the Fall of 2019.

Previously, Dr. Finger was senior vice president for advancement at DePaul University in Chicago and, prior to that, served as vice president for planning and institutional advancement at Mount Mary College (now University) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Dr. Finger is fluent in Spanish and worked in the Bilingual Education Department of Milwaukee Public Schools. Dr. Finger received her Ed.D in higher education management from the University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Arts degree from Mount Mary College and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Marquette University.

PROVOSTSister Susan Yochum, SC, Ph.D., has served as the University’s Provost since July, 2015. She brings a distinguished 30-plus year career serving Seton Hill students as a chemistry professor and as Chair of the Division of Health and Natural Sciences to her position.

As Chair of the Division of Natural and Health Sciences for 18 years prior to her appointment as Provost, Sister Susan’s leadership led to growth in both academic programs and enrollment. She also managed many of the strategic decisions as the University constructed The JoAnne Woodyard Boyle Health Sciences Center, which opened in 2015.

She has been recognized as a Seton Hill Professor of the Year and has been a leader in integrating mobile technology into her classroom and laboratory. In addition, she has earned awards for her contributions to science and education, including the Women Chemist Committee of the American Chemical Society Regional Award for Contributions to Diversity and The Council of Independent Colleges Heuer Honorable Mention Award for Outstanding Achievement in Undergraduate Science Education.

Academics

Seton Hill University offers more than 80 undergraduate majors, twelve graduate programs and a wide variety of certificates and minor fields of study through our five Schools: Business, Education & Applied Social Sciences, Humanities, Natural & Health Sciences, and Visual & Performing Arts. Ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top 15 Regional Colleges (North), Seton Hill is also ranked in the top 10 for Best Value Schools.

Students are taught by approximately 200 full-time and adjunct faculty who are committed to preparing their students for professional success by providing a solid discipline knowledge base within a liberal arts and faith-based context. The learning environment is one of patience, encouragement, challenge and respect where each student’s potential flourishes. The faculty at Seton Hill are seen as a considerable strength and demonstrate passion for areas of expertise and for teaching. Faculty share research and provide high levels of access to and engagement with students.

The liberal arts aspect of a Seton Hill education marks an integral expression of the University’s commitment to the Catholic intellectual tradition. The teaching of critical, creative, and ethical modes of thought and action define the liberal arts at Seton Hill, and is manifest through a wide variety of university activities, including the Liberal Arts Curriculum (LAC) required of all undergraduate students. The curriculum offers ample student engagement, a focus on practical application, and exposure to new ideas and cultural diversity. It also fosters global awareness, prepares students to analyze political issues with greater depth, and increases student marketability.

In addition, Seton Hill is strongly committed to its professional preparation programs, particularly in the Health Sciences. The excellence of the Physician Assistant program is demonstrated

by the overall pass rate of 100% for Seton Hill graduates on the Physician Assistant National Certification Examination (PANCE).

Because southwestern Pennsylvania has a large rural and aging population, Seton Hill University initiated partnerships and programs to help forestall the looming healthcare crisis related to physician shortages. In 2008, Seton Hill partnered with the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) to add a new location to educate and train osteopathic medical students in southwestern Pennsylvania (LECOM at Seton Hill). With 65% of D.O.’s specializing in primary care and 50% of LECOM’s 1,500 graduates remaining in Pennsylvania, LECOM at Seton Hill provides significant value to the region.

Additional examples of external partnerships include the Clincial Laboratory Sciences program, which is affiliated with Schools of Medical Technology at Altoona Hospital, Saint Vincent Medical Center in Erie and Memorial Medical Center, Conemaugh Health System in Johnstown, PA and a 3+3 pre-Law program with Duquesne University. Fast Forward Programs, where students can earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree in five years, are offered in Business, Physician Assistant and Elementary/ Middle Level Education programs. Affiliations with Salus University’s doctoral programs in Optometry and Audiology were added in 2017.

Seton Hill University maintains relationships with institutions in diverse countries, including China, Israel, Japan, and Spain. Students may study in these and other locations for a semester, a year, or a summer, or participate in 2-3 week faculty led trips during the January or May terms. Seton Hill faculty lead trips to counties such as Spain, Italy, Mexico, China, England, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic.
