Fine Art Project
You have a role on the design installation team to exhibit your work as part of the final exhibition of your college lifein based on the script Brief Encounterswhich is set in a fictional railway station Milford Junction. By thoroughlyresearching the themes and locations within the piece we undertake the correct industrial model for the design process toshow your work in a self designed and installed gallery space. The idea is to incorporate your practice and concepts along-
side an established script to join the two disciplines and create a space that is YOURtake as a group on the 1945 classicromance story.
We work to the directors brief(which is this). The target audience for the exhibition is multi-aged and able andtherefore the piece should appeal to both children and adults alike of all physical abilities. The directoris asking us to lookat a simple but effective installation into a two room, design that emulates the character and scenery of the film. He is askingfor the design to be well thought outandrepresentationalof the fictional railway station Milford Junction and the adjacenttea room where the play is predominantly set.
We need to start with research into Brief Encountersby reading the material provided and tailoring the set to what
you have seen and read about it. The design process begins by sketching and using 3D methods to come up with a lookof the piece, this will be the design concept. As a team we need convert these workings into initially a white card modelcompletely to scale, taking into account the legalities ofhealth and safety. Once the set is constructed it is our responsibilityto paint the set with the correct methods and colours. Through this process you will inevitably gain and use an artistic skilland develop a designers eye.
Throughout the process we need to confer and discuss relevant ideas and concepts with all Fine Artists / Set Designerstaking on board theirideas and concerns.
For this to be a successful installation it is vital that everyone in the group works as part of a team. The team has aparticularresponsibility for making sure that the process is smooth running, efficient, reliable and above all safe. A vitalpart of the process is to ensure a close working relationship within the team and everyone must be a good listener as wellas a good communicatordocumenting the progress and team meetings in your sketchbooks as we go.
Be aware that liaison with me, as your chief designer, is central to the smooth running of any process!
