Hello Ms Ioakimedes,

I have in depth questions about Valley of the Moon Children's Home's school. Debra Sanders said she could not answer them and suggested I ask you. Are you the right person to ask in depth questions about VOMCR school?

Debra,

I have pretty in depth questions.

What is the name of the school? Monthly breakdown of the number of children enrolled over the last five years.

How many teachers? What are the teacher(s) qualifications? How many classrooms? How are credits accrued? Is it a K-12? What is the average length of stay at the school? Are there junior and high school classes offered at the school? How much does it cost to run a year? What are the breakdowns of reimbursement (state, county, federal, private)? What is the process by which credits are transferred? How often are IEP's performed? What is the IEP compliance rate? When was the last time there was an administrator visit to the school to check on the quality of the teacher( s)? Do they still participate in the garden program? If yes, how is that time reported as a transferable grade? Is there any oversight of academic outcomes at VOMCH school (testing for example)? What are the extracurricular/after school activities? Discipline policies. Absence rates. Ethnic breakdown of attendees. Most common school students transfer from. Who is the principal? How are academic standards overseen? Are there any set curriculum? How many arrests have been made at the school? How many incidents of violence? How would a student report abusive behavior by a teacher or staff at the school? How would a student report abuse at the shelter (as they would for home abuse) to a staff member at the school? Is there a non-affiliated social worker (a social worker not affiliated with the children's cases) who goes to the school? Do the children have access to a phone? Do the children have access to the internet? Do the children have access to newspapers? What age appropriate activities are provided comparable to public school?

Thank you for your time yesterday and willingness to engage in dialogue about the challenges we're facing with the VOM school program. I look forward to working together to continue the conversation and brainstorm ways to provide education to the youth that need a temporary alternate school placement in a way that makes fiscal and programmatic sense for both agencies.

Do you have a sense of how many youth we should expect for the June summer program and the age break down (teen/pre-teen)?

Also, I mentioned to Meg that we will be replacing all the flooring this summer (all areas except the gym). The project will be done in phases, starting May 28th. I believe the plan is to start with the teen classroom so while that is being done we will use the pre-teen classroom for school, switching back when the teen classroom is completed.

Thanks and take care, G-

Here's the enrollment data for VOM school. The tab you should see on the first screen provides a good visual of the decline in annual enrollment. The other tab shows the month-to-month figures for the last five years.

Please let me know if you have questions.

Hello Nick (and all),

This is just an update regarding one of the follow-up items that we identified at our last VMCH school meeting. I have communicated and/or met with the following school administrators. All of the responses that I received were open and positive. The schools seem comfortable with continuing to support foster youth and following the guidelines of AB 490.

Due to AB490 and McKinney Vento, and the priority they place on school of origin, the districts involved anticipate that there will be relatively little actual change to the number of foster youth being enrolled. From review of this year's VMCH school enrollment data and discussions with Mandy and Georgia, I would agree with this perspective.

The next step is that maybe we could host a meeting at VMCH which includes a tour of the facility. One date that might work for the school folks is August 7th around 11 :00. Our follow-up meeting is later that week, so if we host this prior we can debrief.

Thanks,
