Page 5: Session 8 - Setting and Meeting Targets

Here’s what we mean by

SMART• Specific – set a definitive goal, backed up

by numbers

• Measurable – tie your goal to a unit of

measurement

• Achievable – avoid over-ambition

• Realistic – make sure you can hit your

target with the resources you have

• Time-bound – set deadlines!

Page 6: Session 8 - Setting and Meeting Targets

Good (and bad) practice

• “Generate a great deal of interest, and

encourage lots of students to get involved

with Team Up in the coming year.”

– Smart? NO!

• “Achieve 50 signups for Team Up’s email

list by 12 noon on Day 1 of Freshers Fair.”

– Smart? YES!

Innovation is encouraged!

• Merit and Distinction will be awarded to

those who explore new ways to meet and

exceed targets

• Example: Secretary’s target for

Communications – 3 new Twitter followers

a week

• What methods other than just telling

friends to follow us could they employ?

What if I miss targets?

Page 9: Session 8 - Setting and Meeting Targets

Pivot!

Principle of Leadership No. 5 – missing

initial targets can be learnt from provided

that:

• Reasons why targets were missed were

flagged up in your status reports

• Evaluate, compose a plan of action, and

then execute it!

• It will reflect particularly well on you if initial

shortfalls are learnt from, and rectified
