THE BOLIVIA PROJECT:

WHERE IS IT?

Bolivia:• Central South America

• Borders Brazil, Paraguay,

Argentina, Chile, and Peru


Carmen Pampa, Bolivia:• Four hours due northeast by car

from La Paz, the largest city in Bolivia.

• Located in the Nor Yungas province

Unidad Académica Campesina-Carmen Pampa (UAC-CP)

University History• Founded in 1993 by Sister Damon Nolan

• 30 administrative staff members

• 700 undergraduate students

• Located in Carmen Pampa, Bolivia


PROJECT GOALS:

Main Goal:• To provide clean drinking water to the students and other members

of the UAC-CP campus through a system that is easily maintained

by those same people.


Other Goals:• To educate the people of UAC-CP

and the surrounding Carmen Pampa

community about the importance of

clean water.

• Supporting general public health on

campus and in the community.

PROBLEMS: PAST, PRESENT, AND POTENTIAL

Past:• Project materials and personal transportation.

• Long distance communication for upkeep and needs of the site.

Present:• Separation of upper and lower campus, and of the college from the

community (different priorities, viewpoints, etc.),

• Upkeep of the system by the campus and community.

Potential:• Delayed arrival of chlorine tablets

• Student turnover- possible new unaware population every few years.


WAYS TO SOLVE THESE PROBLEMS:

Work with the community• Find the people who can make things happen

• Develop a way to have the community educate new members

themselves rather than continuing educational trips

Work around politics• Use continuing education and do what you can

• Showing results in one part of the community may help others

understand the importance of our work

• Be understanding of the needs of each part of the

campus/community

Be sincere and show them you are here to help• Listen! Their needs are the highest priority. A system that is not to

their liking is one that will not be used.

• Patience is key, do not press too hard.
