Value Points:
The theme of the poem is that we should be respectful towards everyone.
This poem is a folklore, very popular amongst people of a certain region.
When a story or a belief is passed through generations by word of mouth it becomes
folklore. Folk means people.
Summary:
In the Indian sub-continent there is a common folklore that when the sun shines during
the rains, the fox gets married. This poem by Harindranath Chattopadhyay talks about
a fox getting married. Who are his guests who attended this joyous celebration? The
animal guests who attended this wedding were the hyena, the lion, the crocodile, the
camel, the wolf, the polar bear, the horse and the jackal. All nine of these animals
come together for the celebration. They get precious gifts for the bride and the groom
too. There is only one last guest who arrives uninvited. It is ‘The Man’. The man
arrives empty handed. He gives out an apology for coming empty handed.
The animals are surprised at the man’s rude behaviour. But they decide not to spoil
their mood on the occasion. The animals ignore the man as he talks about Zoology
(the science which studies animals). The animals continue enjoying their special day.
The poem mentions Cardinal numbers one, two, three and Ordinal numbers which tell
the order of numbers e.g. First, second, third, fourth….
The poetry has a musical quality. Rhyming words such as hyena, China; bold, gold;
crocodile, Nile; camel, enamel; writes, nights; vain, Spain; bear, chair; marriage,
carriage; brings, rings are used in the poem.
Zoology, apology; feast, least; present, pleasant; fuss, us; complain, rain; splendid,
ended; are similar sounding words…called rhyming words.
