The study of the female form in motion is a common subject for Sydney Kumalo and yet each work manifests a renewal of exploration rather than a mere repetition. The elongation and simplifi cation of Kumalo’s fi gures combined with their sense of grace and lightness evidences the infl uence of English sculptor Henry Moore, whose work was introduced to the artist by his teacher at the Polly Street Art Centre, Cecil Skotnes. Kumalo’s works are often argued as exhibiting a very delicate balance and tension between Western infl uence and African visuality: in this work we could potentially read the extension of the fi gure’s neck and careful tilt of the head as reminiscent of the still and controlled pose of a ballet dancer, and yet the arched back and bent knees of the fi gure more clearly evoke the vibrancy and movement of “traditional” African dancing. At Kumalo’s fi rst solo exhibition in 1962, one of his Polly Street colleagues, Khabi Mngoma, argued for a reconsideration of Kumalo’s subject as entangled more with the urban experience than that of the “tribal” - infl uenced particularly by township life in deeply divided and complex South Africa. Mngoma qualifi es this, however, by pointing to the clear ways in which Kumalo’s works refl ect “the imaginative and spiritual heritage of his people”, prompting us to look closely in particular at the synthesis of human and animal. In Dancing Figure, there is a subtle sense of this anthropomorphism in the hips, knees and calves of the fi gure, which are carefully abstracted and as such strangely evoke bovine forms from some angles.

In 2007 William Kentridge produced a series of four sculptural heads made out of paper, which are constructed by intersecting two perpendicular cross sections: one from ear to ear and another from the tip of the nose to the back of the head. The result is an, almost, three dimensional portrait that gives the impression of form and presence, but simultaneously emphasises absence and fl atness. In the trajectory of the series of four, the heads morph from a strikingly familiar image - Kentridge himself with his prominent nose and brow line - to a nameless and unknown fi gure. The foundation of the fi gure’s form as silhouette is further complicated by a series of palimpsests that are inscribed onto the surface of the fl at planes: delicate and watery shapes that mould into eyes, lips, and ears, bold black shapes that read both as joins and further dissection, as well as fragmented excerpts of text. As is most often the case with Kentridge’s work, we are cued to read the combination of image and text, the mapping of meaning, and the fl uidity of resemblance through this series of remnants and clues. In Head IV, the most evocative of these are the, sometimes quite jarring, words that fl oat over the eyes and down back of the neck of the fi gure, and, quite literally, through their head. While at fi rst consideration the text may seem nonsensical, especially in phrases like “Lightnings... all over my body… race”, Kentridge has, in fact, drawn the words from a single poem by Russian Soviet poet, playwright, artist, and actor Vladimir Mayakovsky. Closely associated with the Russian Futurists in the early 20th century, Mayakovsky’s work is preoccupied with disrupting the banal repetition of daily life, which resists social change and revolution. The particular poem referenced by Kentridge in this work is Pro eta (About This), which was interestingly written between the end of December 1922 and February 1923 during a self imposed “exile” from the world, in which Mayakovsky remained in his room. The aim of this retraction from society was, according to the artist, to reconsider his whole life: to enter into a kind of jail in which he could process through his personal baggage and that of the world at large. Kentridge quotes the following text, which I include here in the order it appears in the poem:

By God!My fl esh is smokingI can’t stop the sizzling Lightnings All over my body race.…As I poke my lip … Could anyone be so much like me?Awful. … all the faceless populace. Name them? Needless! … Please, comrade, chemist … But with every nerve-twitchand pulse, … I denounce and reject

According to Swedish author, Bengt Jangfeldt, About This is a poem on the tragedy of personal love - but inextricably becoming the tragedy of a world that can only be changed by revolution. This is perhaps why it is so compelling that Kentridge draws us into this narrative several decades later and further removed geographically. Often embedded in the dynamics of the extremely personal and simultaneously the universal, Kentridge’s work tends to prompt us to look directly at violence, at injustice, at our own oblivion - particularly in the context of postapartheid South Africa. The excerpts from Mayakovsky seem, oddly, to mirror the current context of Kentridge’s work and perhaps emphasise the faceless, nameless fi gure onto which all these complex thoughts are mapped.

In 1963, Peter Clarke did a series of illustrations for a Swiss Christian Journal. In addition to these directly pointed works, several Christian themes and motifs make their way into Clarke’s oeuvre - particularly the symbol of the white dove - which makes it compelling that no signifi cant exploration into the religious aspect of Clarke’s work has ever been published. The Shepherd and the Sheep is a clear Biblical reference to the parable of the same name, which features in the book of Luke. The parable reinforces the central Christian tenet of repentance above all else: the shepherd who fi nds the lost sheep is a metaphor for God “fi nding” a repentant sinner. While it may seem irresponsible for the shepherd to leave the whole fl ock of sheep at risk in the search for a single lost sheep, the story emphasises the value God places on the individual who returns to him despite sin. In the painting, the shepherd cradles the found animal gently, while the fl ock graze calmly in the background. In many of Clarke’s works, as in this one, the facial expression of the fi gures is signifi cantly exaggerated. As a focal point of this image, the shepherd seems completely overwhelmed by emotion, which is mirrored in the intense and fragmented background, arguably investing the artwork with a potent religious ecstasy.

This famous image by Pablo Picasso reminds us of the signifi cant cross pollination between Western and South African Modernists. Picasso gifted this precious print to Walter Battiss in 1949 while he was visiting Paris. It is marked by an inscription in the top left corner, which reads “Pour Walter Battiss en souvenir du Picasso Paris 3 June 1949” (“For Walter Battiss in remembrance”). The image undoubtedly encouraged Battiss’ own explorations into abstraction and bears resemblance to the fi ne line work of his many sketches. Inscribed on the back of this print are notes by Battiss including: “From the “famous series” of 11 states (This one Tenth State) was given to me personally by Picasso in his Paris studio in 1949. W. Battiss”. He also notes valuations and a sketch of the ninth state. The fame of this series by Picasso is undeniable: it is often used to exemplify the artist’s particular approach to abstraction because of the way the eleven states of the bull fi gure progress from relatively naturalistic to almost completely essentialised. Throughout the process of these images (produced several days apart), we can trace the “dissection” of the bull’s form through Picasso’s investigation of shape and line. In the penultimate state, the bull is reduced to only a few components, which are nonetheless immediately recognisable. Interestingly, the bull, which is a signifi cant motif in Picasso’s oeuvre, is particularly marked in this state in terms of its virility, which certainly for Picasso is a central part of the essential quality of the animal.

P156

Serendipitously, this unique oil painting by Walter Battiss shows a particularly striking infl uence by Pablo Picasso. The combination of the exaggerated angular nose in profi le and the simplifi ed eye fl attened against the side of the head closely resemble those depicted in seminal works like Guernica (1937). Simultaneously however, the colour palette, humour and sense of light-heartedness are typically and characteristically Battiss. Titled Chariot of Fire, we might consider whether this painting bears any reference to the 1981 British fi lm Chariots of Fire, which tells the story of two Olympic sprinters from vastly different backgrounds. Certainly the runner in Battiss’s image seems to be moving at immense speed because of the colourful trail of light that follows the fi gure. While quite signifi cantly different from Battiss’s work in the early 1980s, it is arguable that this was produced around that time. Further signifi cance is added to this image by its inclusion not only in a print portfolio produced posthumously by the Goodman Gallery (c. 1986), but also in a set of stamps developed as part of the image world of Fook Island, the fi ctional place invented by Battiss and Norman Catherine. In the sheet of stamps the repetition and scale of this striking image is compelling - as if each of the small characters is racing towards the fi nish line and perhaps might even be inclined to sprint off the edge of an envelope.
