2. Intended Learning OutcomesOn successful completion of this module students will be able to:

Knowledge and understanding

1. Understand high frequency vocabulary and basic grammar and interact orally with someone who speaks Spanish slowly and clear.

2. Read and write simple texts in Spanish

Intellectual, practical, affective and transferable skills

1. Demonstrate that they have followed a programme of independent activities in support of learning.

2. Recognize basic Hispanic social and cultural formations

• Attending all the classes is very important and one of the best ways to help students succeed in this subject. Students are expected to arrive on time and take an active part during the classes. If they are unable to attend a class for a valid reason (e.g.: illness), they should contact the teacher.

• Continued absence can result in the termination of their registration as they will be considered to have withdrawn from their studies.

4. Assignments (10%)• Cuaderno de ejercicios I (3%) before Mid-term (26th of February)

• Cuaderno de ejercicios II (3%) before Final exam (26th of April)

• Club de cine en español (4%) Once per month, on Wednesdays at 2.00 pm: Cultural

activities are the ideal complement to the classroom experience. They are designed to give closer insight into socio-cultural aspects of our language, in a more leisurely way. During the semester, we program the Spanish Film Club, an out-of-class activity, in which students have the opportunity to watch and discuss contemporary Spanish films in order to achieve a global vision of the Spanish society and culture.

All coursework assignments and other forms of assessment must be submitted by the published deadline. It is student’s responsibility to know when work is due to be submitted – ignorance of the deadline date will not be accepted as a reason for late or non-submission.

6. Assessments (60%)

• Examination / Assessment scripts are retained by Chiang Mai University and are not returned to students. However, students are entitled to feedback on their performance in an examination and may request a meeting with the teacher to see their examination script and to discuss their performance.

• Range of vocabulary and structures, grammatical accuracy and correct spelling and task completion and quality of information are the main criteria for the assessment paper.

• Mid/ term assessment represents 30% of the total mark for the module and the final one represents 40%.

• The use of dictionaries/textbooks/notes during the assessment is not allowed.

• All questions must be answered in Spanish.

7. Assessment Offences

• Students are reminded that any work that they submit must be their own. When they are preparing their work for submission, it is important that they understand the various academic conventions that they are expected to follow in order to make sure that they do not leave theirselves open to accusations of plagiarism (e.g.: the correct use of referencing, citations, footnotes etc.) and that their work maintains its academic integrity.

• Plagiarism is theft and constitutes the presentation of another’s work as your own in order to gain an unfair advantage.

Español 021101: Spanish lessons are taught through Power Points which follow

the contents, topics and structure of the subject. Provides grammar, vocabulary, and exercises. We will draw heavily on these materials.
