HUGE ** CHANGES APPROVED by NATIONAL

(Huge** - Roget's Thesaurus - "vast, immense, enormous, colossal andmonumental")

This past summer Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons (CPS-ECP) engagedGrant Thornton to create an updated national brand and marketing strategy forthis organization. It appears that just about every aspect of CPS-ECP shouldbe modernised! The report details their analytical findings, recommendedstrategies and high level implementation plan.

Their report and recommendations were approved by our Board ofDirectors !

Page 5: Serving Western Nova Scotia and the Annapolis Valley Bluewater · 9. When you finally get the mechanic down to your boat to show him what won't work, it will. 10. If your boat needs

Summary of their report: "We recommend the following (based on ourresearch, interviews and best practices):Brand Strategy1. Update CPS-ECP’s national brand to:i. Appeal to a community of boaters and outdoor enthusiasts: Reaches a largeraudience;ii. Promote the joy of spending time on the water: Positions CPS-ECP as a funorganization;iii. Care for social, educational and environmental interests: Captures thecurrent focus of education as well interests of younger people;iv. Portray an inclusive, responsible and fun persona: Is more relatable to alarger audience;We recognize that safety has been a mandate of CPS-ECP since its inception.However, stakeholder feedback confirmed there may be negative connotationswith the current brand image of being very ‘safety conscious’. Therefore,we recommend keeping the underlying theme of safety in all aspects of thebrand without it being the main focus.2. Change the name, logo, colour palette, etc. to reflect the updated brandpositioning;3. Create a new value proposition that communicates CPS-ECP’s vision,appeals to the target audience, and demonstrate how CPS-ECP is differentfrom its competitors;

Marketing Strategy and Plan1. Expand the target audience to boaters (including sail, motor and small watercraft) and non-boaters (who are outdoor enthusiasts, safety conscious, curiousabout water activities or boating, etc.);2. Execute a national marketing plan* that helps implement the new brandincluding an updated service offering, revised membership pricing, an effectivepromotional plan including both online and offline marketing channels,a talented internal marketing team and partnerships with externalorganizations.

Note: CPS-ECP will need to determine the marketing budget and feasibility ofimplementing the brand and marketing strategy as some activitiescan be done internally and some should be conducted by an external vendori.e., designing a new name and logo".

These approved recommendations will shake this organisation to thecore. To read the entire report please click here: GRANT THORNTONReport

CPS-ECP offers a series of courses in boating knowledge that build from the basic courses

required by law to what you’d want to know to cross the ocean. Generations of volunteers

have been sharing their experience on the water with new and seasoned boaters, helping

them prepare for both everyday and emergency situations.

The following link is the most useful CPS-ECP site for all scheduled course locations and

dates in N.S. You can see the what and when of courses being offered by various

Squadrons including ours, sign up for one and even pay right online:

Be advised that CPS-ECP National is starting to list courses on the above site that are

done online. Such courses will connect you with an instructor/mentor who will help you

work your way through the syllabus. These online versions of our core courses are quite

useful for people who cannot attend the classroom versions either for reasons of their

location or time available. Our Squadron receives some of the fees paid by students if our

Commander's Corner

DOES CPS-ECP HAVE A FUTURE? Across Canada (and I am sure, NorthAmerica, if not the entire world),volunteer organizations are strugglingto survive. CPS-ECP is not immune tothe ravages of reduced volunteerismand changing demographics; peopleare simply "too busy" or otherwiseoccupied/not interested enough to getinvolved in organizations which requiresome commitment of time and energy.Even volunteer fire departments areexperiencing this trend, as you have nodoubt heard. I got involved with CPS inthe late 1980's, when our nationalmembership was over 30,000. We arenow less than half that, and thenumbers continue to diminish. Sowhat's next? Will CPS-ECP survive? The answer is, it depends. It dependson how well we change ourappearance, make-up, strategy, andcourse delivery methods. It depends onwhether or not we can encouragemembers (like you few who are readingthis right now) to get involved, maintaintheir membership, and participate inlocal squadron activities and events.CPS-ECP has just received the resultsof a major marketing study and will bechanging the way we "do business".We recognize we need to broaden ourappeal to more types of boaters--weare all not just sailors and powerboaters anymore; there are kayakers, canoeists, paddle boards, and whoknows what else will get invented andbecome popular. But we need to reachout to and serve all of these groups

THE LAWS OF BOATING

1. Any tool, when dropped, will immediately bounce off the deck into the water. 1a. If, by some miracle, the tool mentioned above stays aboard it will surely land on top of an uncovered battery touching bothbattery posts if it is metallic. If not metallic, it will find its way to an inaccessible part of the bilge. 2. The probability of being seen is in direct proportional to the stupidity of your act. 3. After you start changing the oil, your nose will begin to itch. 4. If you have to call the Coast Guard on the VHF, everyone you ever knew will hear you.

Page 13: Serving Western Nova Scotia and the Annapolis Valley Bluewater · 9. When you finally get the mechanic down to your boat to show him what won't work, it will. 10. If your boat needs

5. If you are on the cell telling the boss you're sick, a boat will immediately roar by. 6. As soon as you have the fuel dock lined up, you'll get hit by a wake. 7. As soon as you go in swimming and are completely wet, your cellphone rings. 8. The probability of someone you know wanting to raft up increases dramatically if you just stopped for a quiet afternoon. 9. When you finally get the mechanic down to your boat to show him what won't work, it will. 10. If your boat needs 1.5 metres of water, the only spot left on the dock will have 1 metre. 11. The boat immediately upwind will start a generator as soon as you have your plates of food ready. 12. If there are only two people in a marina, they will have adjacent slips. 13. As soon as you sit down to a cup of hot coffee, something will need attention until the coffee is cold. 14. The chances of a red wine spill hitting fabric upholstery is in direct proportion to how new and expensive it is. 15. A 'glass' glass in the cockput will always shatter. 16. The quieter the anchorage, the greater the chances that someone will be playing loud music. 17. There's always at least one boater who believes the guy who doesn't know what he is talking about. (And yes, always a 'guy'.) 18. A closed mouth gathers no feet. (See previous) 19. If the boat shoe fits, it's too expensive. 20. As soon as you find a marina you really like, they will raise the rates. 21. As soon as your boat is old enough to start replacing parts, you will discover they no longer make them.

MY BEAUTIFUL CRUISE

I borrowed a poem from the sky,

And music from a bird,I stole a chime out of the wind,And from the clouds a word.

I borrowed a song from the waves,

A prayer from the silver rain,I took the whispers of angels,

To fill the jib and the main.

As each little thing was added,It really could not fail,

With God's help I put in my mind,A wonderful relaxing sail!

(adapted from "My Beautiful Day"

by Marion Schoeberlein)

Why not get a Recreational Vessel Courtesy Check? You might put

it on your calendar for next Spring! Marcel would be pleased tomeet at your boat. It's free and ensures you have all the right stuff.

Page 14: Serving Western Nova Scotia and the Annapolis Valley Bluewater · 9. When you finally get the mechanic down to your boat to show him what won't work, it will. 10. If your boat needs

Would you bet $200? Marcel says: "The cost of a fine for not having the required safety equipment in good working order on your boatcould be $200 or more. I will be happy to provide a Recreational Vessel Courtesy Check (RVCC) of your boat at amutually convenient time and location. It’s for free and if you have everything you need, you’ll get a SafetyInspection Sticker. If you don’t have everything… I will explain exactly what you should have on board so you can be sure to win thatbet - you’re not just saving $200 - you could be saving your life.

I can be reached via e mail at [email protected] or by phone at 902-798-1138. Marcel."

Commander

Dan White, has taken on the duties of Financial Officer in addition to his instructional duties. Dan would like to step down asSquadron Commander. At the time of writing the other members of the current executive are not willing to step into the role of

Commander for varying good reasons. Please consider helping your Squadron in this capacity or the others listed here. CPS-ECP provides clear guidelines for each Executive position within a squadron and the current executive will provide guidance and

support too. We operate as a team.

Executive Officer (Assistant to the Commander)

Our Commander, Dan White, manages to juggle his full-time employment teaching firefighters while Commanding this Squadronand instructing many of our courses (not to mention a home life!). Dan, or whomever volunteers for the position of

Commander, could definitely use a hand in the day to day running of Bluenose Squadron. For any of these Executive vacancieswe can offer a briefing and written guidelines as to what is expected of any volunteer.

Please contact any Executive (Bridge) Member for further information at your earliest convenience.

You have reached the end of the Fall 2019 Newsletter. Comments and material for future editionsalways welcome. Please send them to [email protected] or any Executive (Bridge) Officer. Thank you.

The correct answer is a) Jim is operating Fly Boy more than 30 metres from shore.

"When boating in the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia, please observe theunposted speed limit of 10 km/h (6 mph or 5 knots) within 30 meters (100 ft ) from shore. This limit applies on all waters within theseprovinces except where other limits are posted."
