WELCOME THE COMMUNITY

Jesus Christ, our King and Shepherd

Today we observe Jesus in a closed place, set apart, where He is alone, facing Pilate. He is questioned: "Are You the king of the Jews?” Jesus invites Pilate into understanding what His "kingship" is. He answers in the affirmative: “Yes, I am a king,” and uses the expression “My kingdom” three times in order to reveal His mystery of salvation and to invite people to come to Him. Jesus explains His origin and His mission: He was born for us, and sent for us, to reveal the truth of the Father from whom we have salvation. The kingship of Jesus: it is not of this world, but of the world to come. He does not have guards or servants to fight for Him, only the loving commitment of His life into His Father’s hands. Pilate seems to despise the Jews, the high priests and the people, who are clearly the ones accusing Jesus, each group bearing responsibility, as we read in the prologue: “He came to His own domain, and His own people did not accept Him” (Jn 1:11). Then comes Pilate’s second question to Jesus, “What have You done?” and Jesus does not respond because he has already made clear that He is king and shepherd; He is bound and crowned while under sentence of death. In this very death Jesus reveals Himself as Lord, the One who came to give His life, the just One for us unjust, the innocent One for us sinners. As King and Shepherd, He leads us to the green pastures of His words of truth, so that by listening to His voice we can follow Him and be faithful to Him all our life. —Father Robert McKay

Advent Bible Study Bible Study will resume starting Nov. 27. For Advent, we will look at the foretelling of Jesus’ coming and second coming, as described in the prophetic

books and the Revelation of John, making connections between prophetic imagery and that used in Revelation. We will gather in the Parish Center on Tuesdays (11/27, 12/4, 12/11, and 12/18); there will be a morning option (9:00-10:15 AM) and an evening one (7:00-8:15 PM.).

Advent Giving Tree The Advent Giving Tree will be decorated with Christmas gift requests for (1) Casa de Clara, a Dorothy Day Catholic Worker Home; (2) Sacred Heart Community Services (SHCS), an outreach program for the poor, and (3) the “Safe Car Park” participants.

For Casa de Clara, blue star ornaments, we are asking for both personal items and gift cards for the women and their children who are residing at the Catholic Worker home in downtown San Jose. On each blue star is the recipient’s first name and age. Please attach the blue star to the gift. Gifts do not need to be wrapped.

For the SHCS, gold & silver ornaments, we are asking for gifts that are generic in nature and should not be wrapped. The gold star ornaments address the pressing winter needs of the SHCS program, namely diapers, infant formula, jackets/coats, sleeping bags, and pop-top canned food items. The silver star ornaments request Christmas gifts for people of all ages whom SHCS serves. Some silver star ornaments are also requests for gift cards.

For the “Safe Car Park”, red star ornaments, we are asking for a gas gift card for the participants.

Please bring all gifts to Mass on the weekends of December 2nd, 9th, & 16th.

Quarterly Parish Outreach Collection, Dec. 1/2 Your contributions to our Quarterly Outreach Collection go directly to Sacred Heart Community Service Resilient Families program and to the West Valley Community Services CARE Program.

The Sacred Heart Community Service Resilient Families Program is an exciting educational program designed to support resilience in young at-risk children through parenting. The overall goal of the RFP program is to strengthen the inner abilities of parents living in disadvantaged neighborhoods to provide their children with sensitive and responsive care-giving. A six-week program is offered where parents learn how to teach their children to feel safe, secure and loved.

The West Valley Community Services CARE (Community Access to Resources and Education) program provides access to valuable health and nutrition resources during times of need for clients in the West Valley service areas. Please make a generous contribution to our quarterly parish outreach collection.

Share Your Faith with Someone! Do you know someone who might be interested in exploring the Catholic faith? Or someone who has never been confirmed or who would like to prepare to receive the Eucharist? If so, why not invite them to find out more about becoming Catholic or preparing for sacraments by contacting Jeannine Leichner, RCIA Coordinator at [email protected] or (408) 867-3634 x 505. Sacred Heart warmly welcomes all who are seeking to know more about our Catholic faith and offers a wonderful process of discovery and spiritual growth in the RCIA. It’s a great place to make new friends, too!
