Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God Service of Worship Baptism of Our Lord Sunday January 13, 2013 Eleven o’clock in the morning Today we celebrate the Baptism of our Lord. The Epiphany season celebrates the revealing of Christ. Traditionally it marks the three events: the visit of the magi, the baptism of Christ, and his first miracle—Jesus’ transforming water into wine at Cana. As our response to the baptism of Jesus, we renew our own baptismal covenant with our Lord. We recall the three elements of our baptism—our stripping of all that stands between us and God, our washing in the water that cleanses us and drowns our sin, and our being clothed in the garments of righteousness, the new vocation of discipleship. Therefore today is a call to holiness of life and renewed vocation. “Baptism,” by He Qi, 2003.

Service of WorshipBaptism of Our Lord Sunday

January 13, 2013Eleven o’clock in the morning

Today we celebrate the Baptism of our Lord.

Oh, let all who thirst, let them come to the water. And let all who have nothing, let them come to the Lord: Without money, without price. Why should you pay the price, except for the Lord?

And let all the poor, let them come to the water. Bring the ones who are laden, bring them all to the Lord: Bring the children, without might. Easy the load and light: come to the Lord. —based on Isaiah 55:1-2 and Matthew 11:28-30

reaffirmination of the Baptismal Covenant

Prayer Lord of all time and eternity, you opened the gate of heaven and revealed yourself as Father by calling Jesus your beloved Son and sending upon him in baptism the dove of your Holy Spirit; you claimed us as your children when you brought us to your freedom through the waters of baptism. Come among us now as we renew the covenant made with you then, and empower us to live the redeemed life to which you call us.

At the close of today’s service, the Lord’s Supper will be celebrated in the Memorial Chapel located to the left of the chancel.

Immediately following the Lord’s Supper, a service of prayer for healing will be held. The service consists of prayers for healing and wholeness,

with anointing and laying on of hands. All are invited.

renewinG our deCision to Follow CHrist Do you turn to Christ as Savior, Lord, and Friend? I turn to Christ.

Do you repent of all your sins? I repent of all my sins.

Do you renounce evil? I renounce evil.

renewinG tHe outward siGn oF inward FaitH We thank you, gracious God, for your gifts of water and the Holy Spirit. We thank you that, through the waters of the Red Sea, you led your people out of slavery to freedom in the Promised Land. We thank you that out of death you raised your Son to glorious life. Send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon this water, that as we recall our burial with Christ in baptism, we may share in his resurrection to new life; that having been born again of water and the Holy Spirit, we may remain for ever in the number of your faithful children, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Do you believe and trust in God the Father, source of all being and life, the one for whom we exist? I believe and trust in God the Father.

Do you believe and trust in God the Son, who took our human nature, died for us and rose again? I believe and trust in God the Son.

Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit, who gives life to the people of God and makes Christ known in the world? I believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit.

This is the faith of the Church. This is our faith. We believe and trust in one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

welCominG oF new members The minister asks questions to the new members and invites all members of the Congregation at Duke Chapel to stand and respond.

Brothers and sisters, do all in your power to increase their faith, confirm their hope, and perfect them in love. With God’s help we will order our lives after the example of Christ that, surrounded by steadfast love, you may be established in the faith, and confirmed and strengthened in the way that leads to life eternal.

This morning we give thanks for the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience. We celebrate its probing of the mind and its seeking to integrate the behavioral and social sciences with the brain and health sciences. The ushers bring a collage of images representing the two fields to the altar.

In Durham, we remember those who are foster parents and all who are adoptive parents. We also remember children who need a nurturing environment and those who long for a stable home. The ushers bring forward a, overnight bag.
