Transcript of SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY - speakcdn.com · paraphrase of Psalm 150 was ... We invite children to...
Worship begins when the first
person arrives. Please worship
silently through the prelude.
Bold text is read or sung
by the congregaon.
*Please stand if able.
Idlewild welcomes children and
encourages them to parcipate
in our enre worship service.
Pick up a children’s worship
packet at the sanctuary door.
Originally cast as two eight-line
stanzas, this 19th century
paraphrase of Psalm 150 was
shortened slightly when it was
set to the present tune with
recurring Alleluias. The Welsh
tune is actually older than the
hymn text and bears a name
meaning “the church of
St. Mary.”
ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME
THE GATHERING (8:30) THE REVEREND SARA DORRIEN-CHRISTIANS
(11:00) MS. SARAH WOLF
HANDBELL PEAL (11:00)
PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP
You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which
you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself,
“I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes
along.” You must do the thing you think you cannot do.
― Eleanor Roosevelt, You Learn by Living
PRELUDE
TRUMPET PASTORALE RICHARD E. FREY (B. 1945)
*CALL TO WORSHIP
Long before the dawn and as the first light shines;
Praise the Lord.
Throughout the day and in every season;
Praise the Lord.
As dusk approaches and well into the night;
Praise the Lord.
Sisters and brothers, praise the Lord.
The Lord’s name be praised.
*PROCESSIONAL HYMN NO. 33
“PRAISE THE LORD! GOD’S GLORIES SHOW” LLANFAIR
*CALL TO CONFESSION
SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY IDLEWILD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME; OCTOBER 15, 2017
8:30 & 11:00 A.M.
*PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Gracious God, forgive us our sin.
Forgive us when our mercy extends only to our own.
Forgive us when we blame others for their poverty.
Forgive us when we live as if all that we have is ours
to do with what we want.
In your mercy, may we learn mercy.
In your justice, may we learn to live justly.
In your love, may we learn how to love...
(silent prayer and meditation)
Amen.
*ASSURANCE OF PARDON
*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE
*PASSING THE PEACE
The peace of Christ be with you.
And also with you!
PROCLAIM GOD’S WORD
GATHERING HYMN (11:00)
Leader: Though we are many, we are one fam’ly.
We are one body in your love.
Make us your people, people of Jesus,
Make us your people called by love.
In the presence of a holy God,
we become aware of the ways
we fall short of God’s best
hopes for us, and the ways we
have hurt others. We turn to
God in prayer, asking for
forgiveness.
We express gratude that
through God’s grace and
Christ’s giving of himself on the
cross we are forgiven and
restored to God and
one another.
We sing in thanksgiving for the
gi1s of forgiveness
and new life.
The Passing of the Peace is one
of the most ancient
responses in worship. Having
received Christ’s peace,
we pass it on.
We invite children to come to
the front at this me.
Each week children bring
quarters to put in educaon
scks, so that young girls
around the world might have
the opportunity for an
educaon. Just $275 (1,100
quarters) provides scholarship,
supplies, and empowerment for
a young girl. As our children
come forward for the Time with
the Younger Church, please
pass them quarters to share.

SERMON TAKE THE NEXT STEP: DR. MONTGOMERY
A FOOLISH DEAL
(Fourth in a sermon series on “Take the Next Step,” our stewardship theme.)
The children lead the
congregaon in The Lord’s
Prayer using “Forgive us our
debts as we forgive
our debtors.”
C3 is in the library for PK and JK
children. Children in senior
kindergarten and older are
welcome to come up for the
Time with the Younger Church,
then stay in the sanctuary for
the enrety of the worship
service.
Before we can know God, God
knows us. Baptism, one of the
two sacraments of the
Presbyterian Church (USA), is in
response to the grace of God,
who calls us to be the people of
God. We welcome children and
adults into the fellowship of
faith. Parents, the
congregation, and children of
the church make promises to
guide, nurture and love the
baptized person.
Following the Time with the
Younger Church, PK and JK
children (three and four-year-
olds) may go to Children’s
Church Connued (C3). Parents,
please take your children out to
the hallway by the T.K. Young
Room and sign them in. Helpers
will escort them to the library.
Children two years old or
younger may go to the nursery
(Conference Room).
The text of Hymn No. 716 is
about stewardship. It was one
of about 450 submissions in a
search for such hymns
conducted by the Hymn Society
of America in 1961. These
words are well grounded by
their musical seFng, an early
American shape note tune
named for a Bapst church in
Harris County, Georgia.
The sermon is a reflecon on
the day’s scriptures, suggesng
implicaons for our faith
and life.
.
We bring to God our
celebraons and cares, praying
for the world, the church and
those close to us.
Doxology literally means
“words of glory.” Doxologies
have long been used by Jews
and Chrisans to praise God.
Here we honor and thank God
“from whom all blessings flow.”

(11:00) “O THOU SWEETEST SOURCE OF GLADNESS” CHARLES WOOD (1866 – 1926) BASED ON A MELODY FROM THE GENEVA PSALTER
O Thou sweetest Source of gladness, light’s all lovely fountain head, Who, alike in joy and sadness, leavest none unvisited; Breath of Godhead, highest King, who upholding everything. Wilt uphold, with love undying—Hear, O hear me humbly crying.
From thy throne, as April shower, thou descendest, heavenly One, Freighted with thy sevenfold dower, from the Father, and the Son: Bring me noble Guest divine, God’s own blessings they are thine, Freely deal at thy good pleasure, fill me in abundant measure.
Save, uphold, and go before me, fainting, be my staff and rod: Dying, to new life restore me; buried, be my grave, O God. From the dust when I arise, come, exalt me to the skies, Where thou within realms supernal, feed thy saints with joys eternal. Amen. –Paul Gerhardt, trans. Johann Christian Jacobi
*DOXOLOGY
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Christ, all creatures here below.
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Praise Holy Spirit evermore;
Praise Triune God whom we adore.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
*PRAYER OF DEDICATION MS. DORRIEN-CHRISTIANS
The invitaon to the Lord’s
Supper is extended to all who
desire to follow Christ,
remembering that access to the
communion table is not a right
conferred upon the worthy, but
a privilege given to the
undeserving who come in faith,
repentance, and love. Even one
who has doubts or whose trust
is wavering is invited to the
table in order to be assured of
God’s love and grace in
Christ Jesus.
A Lutheran pastor wrote this
hymn text in response to a
bishop’s leIer that said, “Our
mission is to touch the lives of
others with Christ’s love.” This
theme is made stronger by
recognizing that shared
purposes do not require the
denial of diversity but are
enriched by it.

in the midst of mundane and difficult situaCons.
Lifeblood has reported that our blood drive came in at 100%
of their forecasted donaCons. There were 13 donaCons given
that morning, including one first Cme donor. This translates
into as many as 45 lives being saved. Thank you to all who
parCcipated.

chain, 683-6578, or by filling out a card from the literature rack.
CONGREGATIONAL CARE
“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up,
just as you are doing” (1Thessalonians 5: 11). BapCsm is a sign
of being engra5ed into the Body of Christ. When we celebrate
the sacrament of bapCsm, a bapCsmal tree is shared with the
family. The tree is rooted to earth and its canopy awed before
heaven. Our hope is that the bapCzed will be rooted to the
earth in discipleship and awed before heaven in a life of
ministry with Jesus Christ. We have deep graCtude for those
who nurture the trees from seed to sapling and to those who
deliver these bapCsmal gi5s.

MTAM every Thursday evening; tutors assist students with
reading and math at Idlewild Elementary School; helpers stuff
backpacks with weekend meals for students at Brewster;
gardeners work with neighborhood children to tend the
McMerton Gardens in Binghampton; mission leaders work with
partners in Ghana and Cuba to install and sustain clean water
systems and learn about one another; and a hospitality team
offers compassionate care to those seeking assistance and
prayer on Sunday morning. And this is just a sampling!
These ministries are sustained by those who present the
offering of their hearts and Cme. If you feel called to join in, or
are simply curious and want to learn more, don’t hesitate to
reach out. We’d love to plug you in somewhere or discern
where and how your gi5s and passions can best be used.

love to have you. (They don’t pack boxes in the summer or
during school breaks.) If interested, please get in touch with

CANTATA
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 29
“EIN FESTE BURG” A MIGHTY FORTRESS IS OUR GOD
No hymn is more closely idenCfied with the Protestant
ReformaCon than “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.” (It is No. 275
in our hymnal.) MarCn Luther himself created both words and
music for this hymn in the year 1529—and it is sCll one of the
most beloved hymns throughout the ChrisCan world. Even
Roman Catholics sing it! No composer of music for Protestant
worship is more revered than Johann SebasCan Bach, who
served several Lutheran churches in Germany during his career.
Among the many cantatas that Bach composed is an especially
beauCful one based upon this hymn. In celebraCon of the
500th anniversary of the Protestant ReformaCon, the Idlewild
Choir and soloists will be joined by orchestra in a performance
of this masterpiece during the 11:00 worship hour on
ReformaCon Sunday, October 29. MOVIE NIGHT AT IDLEWILD
Sunday, November 5, 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.
T.K. Young Room The award-winning film “Different Books, Common Word”
looks at what ChrisCans and Muslims have in common, rather
than what divides us. Both the Koran and the Bible teach
believers to love our neighbors. The movie features five
inspiring stories, including two from the Mid-South, that
demonstrate how some congregaCons and individuals are
finding common ground and seXng examples of interfaith
harmony. Small-group discussion will follow the film, and
children’s programming will be available.

MORAL MONDAYS IN MEMPHIS
Moral Mondays in Memphis is inspired by Dr. King’s work on behalf of poor people and the work of the New Poor People’s
Campaign being organized naConally by Repairers of the Breach. Spearheaded by the Museum’s NaConal MLK50 Clergy
ExecuCve CommiSee, which Steve Montgomery is a member, Moral Mondays is a three-part series of clergy-led
gatherings featuring disCnguished speakers and guided table talks on social jusCce issues. All as we prepare to
commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Rev. Dr. MarCn Luther King, Jr. in our city.
“The intent of Moral Mondays is coming together to explore the deep connecCons between shared religious faith
tradiCons and the moral values of jusCce, fairness and the eliminaCon of poverty, racism and extreme militarism,”
said Dr. Alvin O’Neal Jackson, Chair of the Museum’s NaConal MLK50 Clergy ExecuCve CommiSee.
Moral Mondays will kick off on Monday, October 16, from 6:15 to 9:00 p.m. at Mississippi Boulevard ChrisCan Church with
featured disCnguished speakers, the Reverend Dr. William Barber II, Pastor of Greenleaf ChrisCan Church in Goldsboro,
North Carolina; President and Senior Lecturer of Repairers of the Breach; and architect of Moral Mondays in North
Carolina.
