1 Task 1.1 Overview

Introduction In practice it often happens that HMI control panels are damaged, for example by external influence, so that the machine or system parts cannot be operated any longer. In order to avoid expensive machine downtimes, the system operator should: 1. have a supply of replacement devices. 2. the configuration of every HMI control panel, including control panel data such

as network configurations etc. documented and stored. – Problem/reality

The implementation in practice is not possible without considerable administrative efforts.

3. have a PC including the software for transmitting the HMI configuration to the control panel. – Problem/reality

Usually there is not PC/laptop computer with the respective software. 4. have a qualified employee who knows about the

handling/maintenance/operation of HMI control panels. – Problem/reality

There is no qualified personnel who knows the software. No service technician available, or long waiting period before he is “on site”.

1.2 Overview of the automation tasks In the following, two typical automation tasks are described, for which a solution is presented in the following chapter 2.

1.2.1 Automation task 1

The figure below provides an overview of the automation task. The touchscreen of the HMI control panel was damaged in such a way that it cannot be operated any longer and must be replaced by a new one. Figure 1-1

Requirements of the first automation task For the replacement of the control panel, the following has to be observed: • The configuration of the defective panel must be transferred one-to-one to the

defective panel. • All the control panel data, such as network configurations must be transferred

one-to-one. • The passwords used must be transferred one-to-one. • No other configuration software or other software should be required for the

project download. • It should be possible to have the replacement done by a shop floor electrician.

1.2.2 Automation task 2

The figure below provides an overview of the automation task. You are the producer of serial machines and want to make sure that... • the same configuration is on all the HMI control panels. • an update for several HMI control panels can be carried out easily. • the customer is able to carry out a configuration update independently. Figure 1-2

Requirements of the second automation task The following points must be observed during the serial commissioning and/or the configuration update: • The same device settings should be present for all panels. • All the control panel data such as the network configuration etc. should be the

same for all panels. • All panels should have the same user rights. • No other configuration software or other software should be required for the

project download. • The customer is able to carry out a configuration update independently.

2 Solution 2.1 Solution overview

For the implementation of the tasks described in chapter 1.2 it is recommend to use SIMATIC HMI Comfort Panels. SIMATIC HMI Comfort Panels offer a new Service Concept The Service Concept of the Comfort Panel is a continuous automatic backup of all the process-relevant control panels on a “SIMATIC HMI SD storage card” -> SIMATIC HMI SD storage card. There is a special card slot in the Comfort Panel, where the “SIMATIC HMI SD storage card” is inserted. The following figure gives a schematic overview of the most important components of the solution: • SIMATIC HMI Comfort Panel • SIMATIC HMI SD storage card Figure 2-1

SIMATIC HMI SD storage card

In the following chapters this is described in greater detail, and you will learn how you can use the “system card” for service and serial commissioning of Comfort Panels.

2.2 Advantages of the solution The Service Concept offers you the following advantages: • You always have an up-to-date backup of the configuration on the panel. • Changes, for example in the device settings, are automatically saved. • All the control panel data are automatically saved. • No additional administration is necessary for saving data of the configuration

and its device-specific settings. • A quick replacement of defective devices by a simple commissioning of the

new HMI control panel. • Possibility of “serial commissioning”. • Reduced service interventions. Your final customers will be able to carry out a

“configuration update” or a device exchange by themselves. • No specific technical personnel required.

Delimitation This application does not include a description of the Comfort Panel used. This document describes only the steps that are necessary for this application. Basic knowledge of these topics is assumed.

Required knowledge Basic knowledge about the handling and operation of a Comfort Panel is assumed.

2.3 Which files are saved automatically In the Service Concept of the Comfort Panel, all the data are saved that are located in the internal memory (flash) of the panel. When the system detects a change in the running system, the change is saved to the system card. This means the following files are stored on the system card: • Configuration data of the Comfort Panel. • Operating system of the Comfort Panel. • Licenses from the Comfort Panel. • Settings made in the control panel.

– Changes that were made in “transfer settings” etc. • Data concerning recipes and or the user administration, when “\Flash\” was

selected for storage. Please keep in mind that the internal flash memory should not be used for continuous storage of data, since this can reduce the memory’s service life. In this case, please use an external storage card, which you can insert in the second card slot in the Comfort Panel.

In the following the files listed in this chapter 2.3 are referred to as “control panel data”.

3 Using the Service Concept 3.1 General information

This chapter explains how to handle and operate the system card. Depending on what Comfort Panel you use, the card slots for the “system card” and the “application storage card” are at the back or at the side of the Comfort Panel. For this purpose, look at the device manual. In this application the procedure for a SIMATIC HMI TP1200 Comfort Panel is described (in the following simply referred to as Comfort Panel).

Note Only the “SIMATIC HMI SD storage card” from 2 GB upwards is admitted as system card. Any other storage card will not be recognized as a system card by the control panel.

3.2 Accepting the Service Concept For activating the Service Concept (automatic backup), just insert the system card (SIMATIC HMI SD storage card) into the slot of the Comfort Panel called “System X50 SIMATIC HMI storage card”. The system recognized the system card automatically and automatically activates the Service Concept. No other settings in the Comfort Panel are necessary *).

CAUTION Do not insert or remove the system card during operation! This would automatically stop the runtime. Have a look at the more detailed information about this topic in chapter 3.4.

3.5 Transfer the backup file to the Panel Chapter 3.3 described different application scenarios when the system card is used. In “Scenario 03”, a backup file can be created with the option “Start backup”. The system suggests a storage path you should not change. Example: Default storage path: • “\Storage Card SD\SIMATIC.HMI\Backup\...” • “\Storage Card USB\SIMATIC.HMI\Backup\...” Technical background: If the backup file is to be transferred back to the Comfort Panel (restore process), the system looks for the backup file on the storage card or USB stick under this storage path.

Note You can, however, change the file name “...\devicetype.date_time”.

View complete path: • “\Storage Card SD\SIMATIC.HMI\Backup\devicetype.date_time” • “\Storage Card USB\SIMATIC.HMI\Backup\devicetype.date_time”

Instruction The condition is that a backup file was created and that the default storage path has not been changed.

4 Service and Serial Commissioning Chapter 3 describes how you can use the Service Concept and use it for a quick replacement of a defective Comfort Panels. The Service Concept for the Comfort Panels can also be used for... • service purposes. • for serial commissioning of Comfort Panels.

4.1 Using the Service Concept for service purposes Often considerable costs are incurred even for little changes or extensions of a system, because the costs for travel expenses and the subsequent commissioning at the customer's factory are very high. An example of changes: • Extensions of message texts in a system/machine. • Extensions concerning recipes/sets of data for a machine. • Extensions of screen contents in form of additional I/O fields. In this case you can also use the Service Concept by first transferring the changes to an identical Comfort Panel and then

– sending the complete system card to the customer by mail. – sending the folder “SIMATIC.HMI” from the system card to the customer by

mail. The customer can then copy the file/folder to an empty system card. With this application description, the customer is able to carry out the “Program update” with the system card on his own.

4.2 Using the Service Concept for serial commissioning You can also use the Service Concept for the serial commissioning of identical Comfort Panels. When the data of the first Comfort Panel have been saved to the system card, remove the system card and insert the system card into all the identical Comfort Panels one after the other. The contents of the system card will be automatically transferred to the Comfort Panels before the runtime is started. When you have removed the system card from the Comfort Panels, activate the Option “Do not show this message again” in the message “Missing system card”. Please have a look at the scenario 2 described above Link. All the Comfort Panels now have the same control panel data. Should the Comfort Panels be in the same network, only the IP address has to be adjusted.
