STARTUP, ADJUSTMENT, AND SAFETYCHECKGeneral
1. Furnace must have a 115-v power supply properlyconnected and grounded.
NOTE: Proper polarity must be maintained for 115-v wiring.Control status indicator light flashes code 10 and furnace doesnot operate if polarity is incorrect.
2. Thermostat wire connections at terminals R, W, G, andY/Y2 must be made at 24-v terminal block on furnacecontrol.
3. Natural gas service pressure must not exceed 0.5 psig(14- in. w.c.), but must be no less than 0.16 psig (4.5-in.w.c.).
4. Blower door must be in place to complete 115-v electricalcircuit to furnace.
UNIT OPERATION HAZARD
Failure to follow this caution may result in intermittent unitoperation or performance satisfaction.
These furnaces are equipped with a manual reset limitswitch in burner assembly. This switch opens and shuts offpower to the gas valve is an overheat condition (flamerollout) occurs in burner assembly. Correct inadequatecombustionair supply or improper venting condition beforeresetting switch. DO NOT jumper this switch.
CAUTION!
Before operating furnace, check flame rollout manual resetswitch for continuity. If necessary, press button to reset switch.EAC-1 terminal is energized whenever blower operates. HUMterminal is only energized when blower the gas valve relaycloses during a call for heat.
Prime Condensate Trap with Water
UNIT OPERATION HAZARD
Failure to follow this caution may result in intermittent unitoperation or performance satisfaction.
Condensate trap must be PRIMED or proper draining maynot occur. The condensate trap has two internalchambers which can ONLY be primed by pouring waterinto the inducer drain side of condensate trap.
CAUTION!
1. Remove upper and middle collector box drain plugsopposite of the condensate trap. (See Figure 1)
2. Connect field-supplied 1/2-in. (13 mm) OD tube to uppercollector box drain connection.
3. Insert field-supplied funnel into tube.4. Pour one quart of water into funnel/tube. Water should
run through collector box, overfill condensate trap, andflow into open field drain.
5. Remove funnel; replace collector box drain plug.6. Connect field-supplied 1/2-in. (13 mm) OD tube to middle

BURNERORIFICE
For proper operation and long term reliability the furnace inputrate must be within +2 percent of input rate on furnace ratingplate. The gas input rate on rating plate is for installation at altitudesup to 2000 ft. (610 M)In the U.S.A., the input rating for altitudes above 2000 ft. (610M) must be reduced by 2 percent for each 1000 ft. (305 M)above sea level refer to Table 1.In Canada, the input rating must be derated by 5 percent foraltitudes of 2000 ft. (610 M) to 4500 ft. (1372 M) above sealevel. To adjust manifold pressure to obtain the proper input rate, first, determine if the furnace has the correct orifice installed. Athigher altitudes or different gas heat contents, it may benecessary to change the factory orifice to a different orifice.Tables have been provided in the furnace Service andTechnical Manual to match the required orifice to the manifoldpressure to the heat content and specific gravity of the gas. Todo this:
a. Obtain average yearly gas heat value (at installedaltitude) from local gas supplier.
b. Obtain average yearly gas specific gravity from localgas supplier.
c. Find installation altitude range for your installation inthe manifold pressure tables in Table 3.
d. Find closest natural gas heat value and specificgravity in Table 3.
e. Follow heat value and specific gravity lines to point ofintersection to find orifice size and manifold pressuresetting for proper operation.
f. Check and verify burner orifice size in furnace.NEVER ASSUME ORIFICE SIZE. ALWAYS CHECKAND VERIFY.
g. Replace orifice with correct size, if required byTable 3. Use only factorysupplied orifices. SeeEXAMPLE.
EXAMPLE: 0 - 2000 ft. (0 - 609.6M) altitudeHeating value = 1050 Btu/cu ft.Specific gravity = 0.62Therefore: Orifice No. 44Manifold pressure: 3.4-in. w.c.* Furnace is shipped with No. 44 orifices. In this example, allmain burner orifices are the correct size and do not need to bechanged to obtain proper input rate.
1. Adjust manifold pressure to obtain input rate. (SeeFigure 3)a. Turn gas valve ON/OFF switch to OFF.b. Remove manifold pressure tap plug from gas valve.c. Connect a water column manometer or similar device
to manifold pressure tap.d. Turn gas valve ON/OFF switch to ON.e. Manually close blower door switch.f. Jumper R and W thermostat connections on control
to start furnace. (See Figure 4)

* Derate multiplier factors are based on midpoint altitude for altitude range.
NOTE: For Canadian altitudes of 2000 to 4500 ft. (610 to1372 M), use USA altitudes of 2001 to 3000 ft. (610 to 914M)NOTE: If orifice hole appears damaged or it is suspected tohave been redrilled, check orifice hole with a numbered drill bitof correct size. Never redrill an orifice. A burrfree and squarelyaligned orifice hole is essential for proper flame characteristics.
g. Remove regulator adjustment cap from gas valvepressure regulator (See Figure 3) and turn adjustingscrew (3/16 or smaller flattipped screwdriver)counterclockwise (out) to decrease input rate orclockwise (in) to increase input rate.
NOTE: DO NOT set manifold pressure less than 3.2 in. w.c. ormore than 3.8 in. w.c. for natural gas. If manifold pressure isoutside this range, change main burner orifices to obtainmanifold pressure in this range.

i. Remove jumper R to W.2. Verify natural gas input rate by clocking meter.
a. Turn off all other gas appliances and pilots served bythe meter.
b. Jumper R to W.c. Run furnace for 3 minutes.d. Measure time (in sec) for gas meter to complete 1
revolution and note reading. The 2 or 5 cubic feet dialprovides a more accurate measurement of gas flow.
e. Refer to Table 2 for cubic ft. of gas per hr.f. Multiply gas rate cu ft./hr by heating value (Btuh/cu
ft.) to obtain input. If clocked rate does not matchrequired input from Step 1, increase manifoldpressure to increase input or decrease manifoldpressure to decrease input. Repeat steps b through euntil correct input is achieved. Reinstall regulatorseal cap on gas valve.

SERVICE AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT MANUAL Gas Furnace: (F/G)9MXE
Specifications subject to change without notice.440 04 4311 02 25
SEQUENCE OF OPERATIONNOTE: Furnace control must be grounded for proper operationor control will lock out. Control is grounded throughgreen/yellow wire routed to gas valve and manifold bracketscrew. Using the schematic diagram in Figure 15, follow thesequence of operation through the different modes. Read andfollow the wiring diagram very carefully.NOTE: If a power interruption occurs during a call for heat (W),the control will start a 90second bloweronly ON period twoseconds after power is restored, if the thermostat is still callingfor gas heating. The GREEN LED light will flash code 1+2during the 90second period, after which the LED will beflashing a heartbeat, as long as no faults are detected. After the90second period, the furnace will respond to the thermostatnormally.
The blower door must be installed for power to be conductedthrough the blower door interlock switch ILK to the furnacecontrol CPU, transformer TRAN, inducer motor IDM, blowermotor BLWM, hotsurface igniter HSI, and gas valve GV.
1. Heating (See Figure 17 Figure 23 for thermostat connections.)The wall thermostat “calls for heat,” closing the RtoWcircuit. The furnace control performs a selfcheck, verifies the pressure switch contacts LPS and HPS areopen, and starts the inducer motor IDM.a. Inducer Prepurge Period As the inducer motor IDM
comes up to speed the low pressure switch contactsLPS close to begin a 15 second prepurge period. Thehigh pressure switch contacts HPS are ignored until one minute after the gas valve closes.
b. Igniter WarmUp At the end of the prepurge period, the HotSurface igniter HSI is energized for a17second igniter warmup period.
c. TrialforIgnition Sequence When the igniterwarmup period is completed, the main gas valve relaycontacts GVR close to energize the gas valve GV, thegas valve opens, and 24 vac power is supplied for afieldinstalled humidifier at the HUM 24VAC terminal. The gas valve GV permits gas flow to the burners whereit is ignited by the HSI. Five seconds after the GVRcloses, a 2second flame proving period begins. TheHSI igniter will remain energized until the flame issensed or until the 2second flame proving periodbegins.
d. FlameProving When the burner flame is proved atthe flameproving sensor electrode FSE, the furnacecontrol CPU begins the blowerON delay period andcontinues to hold the gas valve GV open. If the burnerflame is not proved within two seconds, the control CPUwill close the gas valve GV, and the control CPU willrepeat the ignition sequence for up to three moreTrialsForIgnition before going to IgnitionLockout.Lockout will be reset automatically after three hours orby momentarily interrupting 115 vac power to thefurnace, or by interrupting 24 vac power at 24VAC orCOM to the furnace control CPU (not at W, G, R, etc.).
If flame is proved when flame should not be present, thefurnace control CPU will lock out of GasHeating modeand operate the inducer motor IDM until flame is nolonger proved.
e. BlowerOn Delay If the burner flame is proven, theblower motor is energized on HEAT speed 25 secondsafter the gas valve GV is energized. Simultaneously, the electronic air cleaner terminal EAC1 AMP is energized and remains energized as long asthe blower motor BLWM is energized.
f. HeatOff Delay When the thermostat is satisfied, theRtoW circuit is opened, deenergizing the gas valveGV, stopping gas flow to the burners, and deenergizingthe humidifier terminal HUM 24 VAC. The inducer motorIDM will remain energized for a 15second postpurgeperiod. The blower motor BLWM and air cleaner terminalEAC 1 AMP will remain energized for 90, 120, 150, or180 seconds (depending on the heatOFF delayselection). The furnace control CPU is factoryset for a120second heatOFF delay.
2. Cooling ModeThe thermostat “calls for cooling.”a. SingleSpeed Cooling
(See Figure 17 Figure 23 for thermostat connections)The thermostat closes the RtoGandY circuits. TheRtoY circuit starts the outdoor unit, and the furnacecontrol RtoGandY/Y2 circuits start the furnaceblower motor BLWM on COOL speed. The electronic air cleaner terminal EAC 1 AMP isenergized with 115 vac when the blower motor BLWMis operating. When the thermostat is satisfied,RtoGandY circuits are opened. The outdoor unitwill stop, and the furnace blower motor BLWM willcontinue operating on the COOL speed for an additional90 seconds. Jumper Y/Y2 to DHUM to reduce thecooling offdelay to 5 seconds. (See Figure 4)
b. TwoSpeed Cooling (See Figure 17 Figure 23 for thermostat connections.)
The thermostat closes the RtoGandY1 circuits forlowcooling or closes the RtoGandY1andY2circuits for highcooling. The RtoY1 circuit starts theoutdoor unit on lowcooling speed, and the furnacecontrol RtoGandY1 circuit starts the furnaceblower motor BLWM on lowcool speed (same speedas FAN). The RtoY1andY2 circuits start theoutdoor unit on highcooling speed, and the furnacecontrol RtoGtoY1 and Y/Y2 circuits start thefurnace blower motor BLWM on COOL speed. The electronic air cleaner terminal EAC 1 AMP isenergized with 115 vac whenever the blower motorBLWM is operating. When the thermostat is satisfied, the RtoGandY1or RtoGandY1 and Y2 circuits are opened. Theoutdoor unit stops, and the furnace blower BLWM andelectronic air cleaner terminal EAC 1 AMP will remainenergized for an additional 90 seconds. Jumper Y1 toDHUM to reduce the cooling offdelay to 5 seconds.(See Figure 4)
3. Dehumidify Mode (See Figure 17 Figure 23 for humidity sensingthermostat connections.) The dehumidification output, H on the humidity sensingthermostat should be connected to the furnace controlthermostat terminal DHUM. When there is a dehumidifydemand, the H input is activated, which means 24 vacsignal is removed from the DHUM input terminal. In otherwords, the DHUM input logic is reversed. The DHUMinput is turned ON when no dehumidify demand exists. Activation/DeactivationOnce 24 vac is detected by the furnace control on theDHUM input, the furnace control operates in dehumidifymode. If the DHUM input is low for more than 48 hours, the furnace control reverts back to nonhumidity sensingthermostat mode. The cooling operation described in item 2. above alsoapplies to operation with a humidity sensing thermostat. The exceptions are listed below:
SERVICE AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT MANUAL Gas Furnace: (F/G)9MXE
Specifications subject to change without notice.26 440 04 4311 02
a. When the RtoGandY1 circuit is closed and thereis a demand for dehumidification, the furnace blowermotor BLWM will continue running at lowcool speed(same speed as FAN).
b. When the RtoGandY/Y2 circuit is closed and thereis a demand for dehumidification, the furnace blowermotor BLWM will drop the blower speed from COOL toHEAT for a maximum of 10 minutes before revertingback to COOL speed. If there is still a demand fordehumidification after 20 minutes, the furnace controlCPU will drop the blower speed back to HEAT speed. This alternating 10 minute cycle will continue as longas there is a call for cooling.
c. When the “call for cooling” is satisfied and there is ademand for dehumidification, the cooling blowerOFFdelay is decreased from 90 seconds to 5 seconds.
4. Continuous Blower Mode When the RtoG circuit is closed by the thermostat, theblower motor BLWM will operate on continuousblowerspeed (same speed as FAN). Terminal EAC 1 AMP isenergized as long as the blower motor BLWM isenergized. During a call for heat, the blower BLWM willstop during igniter warmup (17 seconds), ignition (7seconds), and bloweron delay (25 seconds), allowingthe furnace heat exchangers to heat up more quickly, then restarts at the end of the bloweron delay period atHEAT speed. In heating, the furnace control CPU will hold the blowermotor BLWM at HEAT speed during the selected heatoffdelay period before reverting to continuousblowerspeed. When the thermostat “calls for lowcooling,” theblower motor BLWM will remain operating at continuousblower speed. When the thermostat “calls for highcooling”, the blowermotor BLWM will operate at COOL speed. When thethermostat is satisfied, the blower motor BLWM willoperate an additional 90 seconds on COOL speedbefore reverting back to continuousblower speed. When the RtoG circuit is opened, the blower motorBLWM will continue operating for an additional 5seconds, if no other function requires blower motorBLWM operation.
5. Heat pump (See Figure 17 Figure 23 for thermostat connections.)
When installed with a heat pump, the furnace controlautomatically changes the timing sequence to avoid longblower off times during demand defrost cycles. When theRtoWandY1 or RtoWandY1andG circuitsare energized the furnace control CPU will switch to orturn on the blower motor BLWM at HEAT speed, andbegin a heating cycle. The blower motor BLWM willremain on until the end of the prepurge period, then shutoff for 24 seconds then come back on at HEAT speed. When the W input signal disappears, the furnace controlbegins a normal inducer postpurge period and theblower remains running at HEAT speed for the selectedblowerOFF delay period then switches to lowcoolspeed (same speed as FAN). If theRtoWandY1andG signals disappear at the sametime, the blower motor BLWM will remain on for theselected blowerOFF delay period. If the RtoWandY1 signals disappear, leaving the G signal, theblower motor BLWM will remain on for the selectedblowerOFF delay period then switch tocontinuousblower speed. When theRtoWandY/Y2, RtoWandY/Y2andG,RtoWandY1andY/Y2, or RtoWandY1andY/Y2andG circuits are energized thefurnace control CPU will switch to or turn on the blowermotor BLWM at HEAT speed, and begin a heating cycle. The blower motor BLWM will remain on until the end ofthe prepurge period, then shut off for 24 seconds thencome back on at HEAT speed. When the W input signaldisappears, the furnace control begins a normal inducerpostpurge period and the blower switches to COOLspeed after a 3 second delay. If theRtoWandY/Y2andG or RtoWandY1andY/Y2andG signals disappear at the same time, theblower motor BLWM will remain on for the selectedblowerOFF delay period. If the RtoWandY/Y2 orRtoWandY1andY/Y2 signals disappear, leavingthe G signal, the blower motor BLWM will remain on forthe selected blowerOFF delay period then switch tocontinuous blower speed.
