STUFF YOU NEED TO KNOW March 9, 1959: The Barbie Doll made its debut at the American International Toy Fairin NY. Barbie’s creator was Ruth Handler, who co-founded Mattel, Inc. with her

husband in 1945. After a trip to Germany, she returned with therights to a popular German doll named Lilli. It was redesigned andrenamed Barbie after her daughter, Barbara. The Lilli doll was based on a German comicstrip character and marketed as a racy gag gift to adult men in tobacco shops. Mattel usedits sponsorship of the Mickey Mouse Club to promote the doll. The rest is history. The firstBarbie sold for just $3.00. A mint condition, first edition Barbie sold at auction in 2016 for$27,450. (That’s a healthy profit) Barbie’s full name is actually Barbara Millicent Roberts.

She weighs just 100 lbs and makes her living being Barbie.

USELESS FACT OF THE DAY: Daylight Saving Time: It is observed in all the USA except Hawaii and Arizona. Only 26% of Americanswant to keep it. Why? Only the government would believe that you could cut a foot off the top of a blanket,

sew it to the bottom, and have a longer blanket. (Don’t forget to set your clocks ahead this Sunday.)

HOW ROTARIANS ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCERotarians make amazing things happen, like: Breaking the cycle of poverty for women: Most of the women living in ruralGuatemala do not have the collateral to get loans from regulated financial institutions. The Rotary Club of Guatemala dela Ermita helped 400 local women complete financial literacy courses so they could pool their money and fund their ownmicrolending program....Skills development, business training: In Esmeraldas, Ecuador, Rotary members helped grantmore than 250 microloans and train more than 270 community members in sewing, baking, plumbing, microcredit,business management, and leadership.....Sustainable farming: In west Cameroon, soil erosion and loss of soil fertility havesignificantly reduced farmers’ harvests. Rotary members gave farmers the skills they needed to improve soil fertility,control soil erosion, and market their produce. The results: increased crop yields and profits.
