windream Server InstallationIntroduction

This quick guide serves as a help for the installation of the windreamServer services (version 2.5 and higher). The description will present aquick survey on the basic features and the necessary requirements ofthe windream Server installation. In addition, it describes how toexecute the installation. We also explain which basic configurations andsystem settings will have to be checked and adapted for the operationof the services after the installation has been completed successfully.

In the check list at the end of this documentation, all requirementswhich have to be fulfilled for the installation of the Server are listedonce again. Before starting the installation, please use this list to checkwhether your system fulfills the requirements.

Note: In case of errors occuring during or after the installation –which we do not expect – you will find detailed information on therespective aspects in the documentation named "windream –Server Installation". This documentation also contains a detaileddescription of the installation process, the uninstallation and theupdate installation of all windream Server services. Thedocumentation is available on the installation CD as PDF andCHM file in the directory Doku/serversetup.pdf orserversetup.chm.

Users should be familiar with the operation of Microsoft Windows2000 Server, Windows 2003 Server and Microsoft SQL Server orOracle 8i/9i/10i. You can find further information on this topic in thecorresponding documentations provided by Microsoft and Oracle.

2 windream Server Installation

Basics of the windream Server installationThe installation of the windream Server requires in each case aprevious installation of Microsoft SQL Server 2000/2005 or Oracle 8.i(version 8.1.7.3 or higher), Oracle 9i (version 9.2.0.4 or higher) orOracle 10i (version 10.1.0.4) including the necessary components forthe windream database (cf. further notes concerning this topic insection "Software Requirements for the windream database").

The installation of the ObjectStore Service is optional and is onlyrequired, if the windream long-term archive is used. If the long-termarchive is used, the ObjectStore should be installed before theinstallation of the windream Server. A later installation of theObjectStore is also possible (for example if the long-term archive shallpossibly be installed in future). In general, the objects acquired in thedocument management system windream can be archived withoutinstalling the long-term archive or the ObjectStore.

The following order of installation steps is required:

1. Microsoft SQL Server / Oracle; 2. optional: windream ObjectStore Service (only if the windreamlong-term archive is used);

3. windream Server services.

The services can be installed on one or on several servers. If you wantto install Microsoft SQL Server / Oracle on a computer which isdifferent from the windream Server, you will have to install thedatabase components of the windream Server on the server computer, too.

You can find the installation programs of the described servicesincluding the respectively required single components on bothinstallation-CDs which you received from your windream partner. Youcan find further information on hardware and software requirements inthe section "System Requirements".

The windream Server is installed with the following components:

• windream main services (windream DMS-Service, windream TCP-Service, windream Agent, windream Thumbnail Service andwindream Event Service),

• windream Database (SQL Server or Oracle),• windream Full-Text Service,• windream Database Full-Text Extension (SQL Server Full-Text

Catalogue, respectively Oracle InterMedia components),• System Libraries (update)• Microsoft MDAC 2.5 or higher.

windream Server Installation 3

All windream Server installations and configurations have to beexecuted by a user with local administrator rights, as services have to beinstalled and local user-accounts and group-accounts have to becreated.

Note: You are not allowed to install the windream Server and thewindream Client software on the same computer.

4 windream Server Installation

System requirementsIn the following, the necessary system requirements are listed.

System architectureThe following system architectures are supported:

• windream Server is installed on a Primary Domain Controller(PDC). We do not recommend an installation on a PDC!

• windream Server is installed on a Windows 2000 or 2003 Serverwhich is logged in to a Domain.

• windream Server is installed on a Standalone Server. The applicationserver is not a Primary Domain Controller, and a Primary DomainController is not available and configured for the networkneighborhood.

• No DHCP configuration of the Server. A fixed IP address, whichhas for example been assigned by a team software is allowed.Nevertheless, a message will be displayed saying that for at least oneaddress a network card DHCP must be configured and that thewindream DMS-Service will not start automatically any morebecause of security reasons, after the local IP address has changed. In this case, please consider the notes in documentation "windream– Server Installation" under topic "IP-Address of the Server haschanged ".

• windream Server may not be installed on a Backup DomainController (BDC).

• No computer with NetBIOS name "windream" may exist in thenetwork neighborhood. The windream Server may not be named"windream".

Please cf. documentation "windream – Server Installation" under thetopics "Client-Server System Architecture" and "windream CommonUser Configuration" for further details.

Hardware requirements for the windream ServerFor the installation of the windream Server Services, the followingrequirements have to be fulfilled:

• Computer: processor with 400 MHz or more.• RAM: 128 Mbyte (recommended: 256 MByte).• Monitor: VGA or SVGA with at least 800x600 resolution.

Page 9: Server Installation Quick Guide - windreamdownload.windream.com/wd40/dokumente/quickgui... · previous installation of Microsoft SQL Server 2000/2005 or Oracle 8.i (version 8.1.7.3

windream Server Installation 5

Required hard disk capacityEnsure that enough hard disk capacity is available on the windreamServer for the database (SQL or Oracle) and for the SQL ServerFulltext files or the InterMedia components of Oracle. Therequirements also depend on the expected data volume.

Generally, hard disk capacity will be required for:

• The windream installation, about 200 MByte.• The windream data in the database (incl. full-text) according to the

data volume (Requirement: SQL Server or Oracle already installed).• The windream file storage, at least 1 GByte (according to the data

volume).• The windream temporary directory, at least 500 MByte.

Software requirements for the windream (main)servicesBefore starting the installation of the windream Server services, thefollowing software requirements must be fulfilled:

• Microsoft Windows 2000 Server with service pack 4 or MSWindows 2003 Server with service pack 1 must be installed.

• Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 or higher with Active Desktopmust be installed.

• Microsoft MDAC 2.5 or higher must be installed.• Microsoft Management Console 1.2 must be installed.• Adobe Acrobat Reader must be installed for viewing and printing

the documentation.• windream ObjectStore (version 5.1 or higher) must be installed.

This is only necessary if the archiving functions of the windreamarchive are required and if they are licensed.

• Microsoft XML 3 (msxml3.dll version 8.10.8303.0) must beinstalled for archiving the index data of the windream objects andof the object type information in XML-format. This is only valid, ifthe OjectStore Service is installed and if windream objects shall bearchived with XML-data (ObjectStore must have been configuredrespectively).

Software requirements for the windream databaseFor the installation of the windream Database, the followingrequirements have to be fulfilled, which depend on the database used(SQL or Oracle):

Page 10: Server Installation Quick Guide - windreamdownload.windream.com/wd40/dokumente/quickgui... · previous installation of Microsoft SQL Server 2000/2005 or Oracle 8.i (version 8.1.7.3

6 windream Server Installation

Microsoft SQL Server• Microsoft SQL Server 2000 including service pack 4 or Microsoft

SQL Server 2005 (9.00.1399) must be installed. Ensure that thecodepage is set to the recommended value of 1252 (ANSI Server)during the installation of SQL Server and the full-text search isinstalled with the disabled function of considering case sensitivewriting (see note). These settings are automatically executed by thesetup of SQL Server. Additionally, option SQL Server and Windowsmust be enabled for authentication.

We do NOT recommend to switch on the option of case sensitivity assorting criterium in SQL Server. This option should only be enabled, ifa case sensitivity is desired explicitly at the windream workstationswhen searching for index values. Please read the following note.

Note: If the option of considering case sensitivity as a sortingcriterium is NOT enabled, windream search operations will notconsider case-sensitivity. However, it is an advantage that existingSQL indices are used in this case. At the windream clients, thesearch option of case sensitivity must nevertheless be enabled sothat the system will not execute search operations using theUPPER() database function, which might result in a loss ofperformance.

• Microsoft SQL Server must be started.

Note: If problems occur with SQL Server concerning performanceor execution of other applications, the reason may be the dynamicmemory administration of SQL Server. You will find further notesin the documentation "windream – Server Installation", topic"Software Requirements for the windream database" and in therespective documentations on SQL Server provided by Microsoft.

Oracle 8.i / 9i / 10i (Standard / Enterprise Edition)• Database Oracle 8.i version 8.1.7.3 or higher, or Oracle 9i version

9.2.0.4 or higher, or Oracle 10i version 10.1.0.4 or higher must havebeen installed.

• InterMedia Text-Option must be installed.• Oracle Client 8.1.7 with ORAOLEDB provider 8.1.7.3.2, Oracle

Client 9.2.0.4 with ORAOLEDB provider 9.2.0.5 or ORAOLEDBprovider 10.1.x must have been installed.

Note: ORAOLEDB provider 10.2.0.1 may NOT be used, as –partly – a connection from the windream DMS service to the

Further requirementsFurther requirements which have to be fulfilled for the installation ofthe windream Server will be described now.

Licence keyThe license data to be entered while running the setup program has tobe made available.

Path length of the program directoryThe maximum path length of the program directory in which the servercomponents are installed is limited and must not be more than 800characters (see "Important Warning" at the beginning of thedocumentation "windream – Server Installation").

windream users and groupsThe windream user accounts and group accounts which are necessaryfor the installation and the operation of the windream Server servicesare created by the setup program. The windream mainuser and thewindream group of all windream users are created (default:windream users). The name and the password of the mainuserand the name of the windream group have to be determined before theinstallation (for example by an administrator) or they can be chosenfreely while running the setup program.

If the windream Server is installed on a Windows 2000 / 2003 Serverwhich is logged on to a domain, you will also have to create thewindream mainuser account on the corresponding domain controlerwith the same name and password as on the windream Server. This isnot automatically executed by the setup program.

Note: Setup offers a separate dialog box for the configuration andcreation of the windream mainuser account and the windreamgroup. The windream mainuser and the group are configured bysetup according to the entries made at this point. The mainuser andthe group will only be created if they have not been available so far.Additionally, these entries are also used for the necessary DCOMsettings and the system settings.

You can find further information on the creation of user accounts andgroup accounts in the documentation "windream – Server Installation"under "Creating windream user accounts" and "Creating windreamgroup accounts".

MS SQL Server administrator loginThe setup program requests an MS SQL Server Administrator Login todetermine the MS SQL Server authentication for the creation of thedatabase.

If the Windows NT authentication shall be used as MS SQL ServerAdministrator Login, you have to be a member of the SQL Serveradministrator group. Then, any further information is not necessary.

If the SQL Server authentication shall be used as MS SQL ServerAdministrator Login, you have to know the name and the password ofthis SQL Server Administrator Login or you have to create acorresponding user-account in the SQL Enterprise Manager inadvance.

You can find further information on the MS SQL Server authenticationin the documentation "windream – Server Installation" under the topic"MS SQL Server Authentication".

Oracle administrator loginAn Oracle DBA Login will become necessary for creating thewindream database when running the setup program (explicitauthentication). Thus, you will have to know the name and thepassword of the Oracle database administrator login used, or arespective user account must – if necessary – be created in advance.

Please cf. further notes on Oracle authentication in the documentation"windream – Server Installation", topic "Oracle Authentication".

Database dataDepending on the database used, the following information must beprovided for being entered while running the setup program of thewindream database installation:

• Name of the Server on which MS SQL Server is installed, or• name of the Oracle Net8 Service, over which the Oracle instance to

be used is addressed.

Oracle CTXSYS loginWhen using Oracle, the name and the password of the OracleCTXSYS-user is additionally required for entering the CTXSYS Loginwhile running the setup program (default: ctxsys).

The windream mainuser account will only be created again, if it has notbeen available yet. Additionally, these entries will be used in the systemsettings for the DCOM configuration of the DMS Service and thewindream Server services (DMS Service, Fulltext Service, Agent andThumbnail Service).

In case the windream mainuser account should already exist on thetarget system, a check of the password entered here will be executed. Ifthis check fails, if the user-ID does not exist or if the password enteredis incorrect, respective messages will be displayed, but the setupprogram will not be cancelled. You will be able to correct the entriesbefore the setup can be continued. In any case, ensure that the user–IDor the password entered is correct.

Note: If the windream Server is installed on a Windows 2000 or2003 Server and if this server is logged on to a domain, thewindream mainuser account will have to be additionally created onthe respective domain controller with the same name and passwordas on the windream Server. This will not be executed automaticallyby the setup program. When using Trusted Domains, the windreammainuser account must be created on all Domain Controllers (notexecuted automatically by setup).

windream groupsSelect the desired option here to determine the group of all windreamusers. An operating system group must exist, in which all users aremembers who shall work with windream. After the installation, thisgroup will be taken over into the windream user and groupadministration. Only members of this group will have access towindream. Thus, after having completed the installation, all users whoshall have access to windream must be assigned to this group in theuser and group administration of the operating system. After that, youadjust this group in the windream user and group administration overthe WMC in order to apply the changes in windream. A detaileddescription of the windream user and group administration can befound under the respective topic in the online help and the windreamGmbH documentation.

In order to determine the windream group of all users, you can create anew group or select an operating system group which is alreadyavailable.

• Create as local group (recommended)• Create as global group (not recommended)• Select existing group (not recommended).

Create as localgroup

Select this option to create a new operating system group on thewindream Server (recommended). Setup will create the new group with

Create as globalgroup

If the windream Server is installed on a PDC and if you want to createa new global operating system group, you will have to select thisoption. Setup will create this new group with the entries in the fieldsfor the group name and the comment. The fields are preset with thedefault values for the windream group (windream User and Allwindream Users). The entries can be changed. However, werecommend to apply the presettings.

The group will only be created if it has not been available so far.

All users who shall have access to windream have to be assigned to thisgroup over the user and group administration of the operating systemafter having completed the setup routine.

Note: The option for creating a global group will only be enabledif the windream Server is installed on a PDC.

Selectexisting group

Select this option, if you want to determine an already existingoperating system group as windream group. You determine the desiredgroup over the command button for selecting a group.

When entering the group name you should consider that the designatorof the Domain or the Server on which the selected group is createdmust also be determined (<MYDOMAIN>\Group name orServer name\Group name).

Setup will execute the following actions according to the entries made:

• windream mainuser account is created, if it is not yet existing.• Group "windream Users" will be created depending on the option

selected (if not yet available) and taken over into the windream userand group administration.

• DCOM settings for the windream DMS Service and the ThumbnailService will be made.

• Settings for the windream Services (DMS Service, Fulltext Service,Agent and Thumbnail Service) are made in the system settings.

Final installation stepswindream creates the WMShowLg.bat file in the windreamapplication directory, which contains all logfiles created by the setup.According to these files, you can check whether the installation hasbeen executed successfully. These files can be displayed after theinstallation. Additionally, you can start the windream services and thewindream Control Center at the end of the installation.

Viewing log files

At the end of the installation you can determine by selectingcorresponding options, whether the logfiles which are created by thesetup and the readme file for the server installation (filereadme.txt) shall automatically be displayed or not.

It is also possible to display these files afterwards by executing the fileWMShowLg.bat in the program directory of windream.

Starting the windream servicesAfter the installation has been completed successfully, the windreamServices can be started and the startup type can be set toAutomatical. In addition, the windream Control Center withwhich the windream configuration and the windream Service Managercan be started, will be enabled.

DCOM configuration and system settingsWhen installing the windream Server services, the necessary DCOMconfigurations, system settings and settings of the windream configurationwill automatically be executed. For the configuration and the creationof the windream mainuser account and the windream groups, aspecific dialog box is offered in the setup. All further settings which areexecuted automatically by the setup do not need any additional entries.

windream Server Installation 27

After the installationIf you use Oracle, you will have to configure the Oracle job for fulltextindexing after having completed the installation (Oracle 8i only).

In order to be able to work with windream, you will have to install thewindream client software on a connected client computer after theserver installation has been completed. After that, you assign thewindream rights on the root-directory of the windream drive.

After that you will still have to make the necessary settings in the userand group administration of the operating system and in the windreamManagement Console. These actions are executed on the respectiveservers.

If you use MS SQL Server, you can proceed with the chapter named"Installing the windream client".

Configuring Oracle jobs for fulltext indexingAn Oracle job for fulltext indexing will be configured by the serversetup program, which synchronizes the fulltext index every 5 minutesand thus makes it retrievable. In order to execute this job, settingjob_queue_processes = 2 must be enabled.

Since Oracle 9i has been issued, this setting is made by default and thusit need not be adjusted. Under Oracle 8i, you will still have to make thissetting manually after the installation. The setup program displays arespective message which also contains the name of the initializing fileand the directory in which it is stored.

This setting can – for example – be set before starting Oracle in therespective initialising file. Thus, you open the initialising file<Inifile>.ora (for example init.ora) in a word editor. Linejob_queue_processes = 2 must exist in this file. If this entrydoes not exist, you can also add the line manually.

After having entered or changed this value, the database must be re-started via the DBA studio. Ensure that the correct initialising file isused on startup.

Additional notes on creating Oracle jobs can be found in thedocumentation named "windream – Server installation" under topic"Oracle jobs for fulltext indexing".

Installing the windream clientExecute the client Installation in the way it is described in thedocumentation "windream – Client Installation". After having startedthe setup program, the setup assistant will lead you through the

Page 32: Server Installation Quick Guide - windreamdownload.windream.com/wd40/dokumente/quickgui... · previous installation of Microsoft SQL Server 2000/2005 or Oracle 8.i (version 8.1.7.3

28 windream Server Installation

installation steps. Follow the instructions in the corresponding dialogboxes.

Assigning windream rights on the root directoryAfter the client installation has been finished, you will have to assignthe windream rights on the root directory of windream. Theassignment of rights on the root directory of the windream drive andalso the creation of initial folders and the assignment of rights on thesefolders is executed from a connected client computer. These actionshave to be executed by the windream mainuser.

RECOMMENDATION:

Create the main folders which are important for your company on theroot level (windream drive) and assign the initial rights to these folders. After that, remove the rights of editing (NOT the rights of reading)from the root level for all windream groups, except the windreamadministrator group. This prevents for example an unintentionalcreation of temporary files by executing the setups and also a non-coordinated creation of files in the root directory.

In the following, it is described how to assign the initial rights. You canfind a detailed description of the administration of rights in the online-help, which you can start via command Help from the windreamControl Center or from tab page Rights.

How to assign the initial rights to the windream rootdirectory

1. Log in as windream mainuser to a connected client (required is theinstallation of windream client software).

2. Start the windream services (VFS-service). 3. Select the windream drive. 4. Click Properties in the context menu. 5. Switch to tab page Rights. 6. Assign the necessary rights to the user groups by adding therespective groups and setting the required rights by clicking thecorresponding checkboxes.

7. Click OK to apply the settings and to close the dialog box.

After that, you switch to the windream drive and create the firstnecessary folders using the commands of the Windows Explorer. Then, assign the rights to these folders.

Page 33: Server Installation Quick Guide - windreamdownload.windream.com/wd40/dokumente/quickgui... · previous installation of Microsoft SQL Server 2000/2005 or Oracle 8.i (version 8.1.7.3

Further requirements for operating windreamIn addition to the configurations and settings made by the setupprogram, the operation of windream requires additional settings in theuser and group administration of the operating system and in thewindream Management Console. These settings are not executed bythe setup program and must thus be executed manually on therespective servers.

Settings in the user and group administration of the operatingsystemIf you have created a new group for the windream users when runningthe setup routine, you will have to assign all users to this group whoshall get access to windream. This assignment is executed over the userand group administration of the operating system and on the server onwhich the group has been created (see also topic "User and groupadministration" in the windream administration guide and in the onlinehelp provided by windream GmbH).

Settings in the windream Management Console (WMC)After the installation, different configurations are to be made in thewindream Management Console before operating windream. Thesesettings must be executed on the windream server under the accountof the windream mainuser. Thus, on the windream server, you log inlocally as windream mainuser and start the WMC. You will have toconfigure the following settings with the respective administrativefunctions:

• Apply users and groups who shall get access to windream in thewindream user and group administration.

• Determine at least one windream administrator group in thewindream user and group administration.

• Adjust users and groups.• Create the desired ObjectStores in the administration of the

windream Storages.• Create the required document and folder types with the

administration of object types (determine indices, ObjectStores andlife-cycle).

The description of these functions is not part of this documentation.Respective information can be found in the online help and in thewindream user and aministration guides provided by windreamGmbH.
