Why Migration and not Upgrade?

Test Environment

Verify that the source server has sufficient disk space (at least 23 MB)Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 is installed on computers that are running Windows Server 2003Windows PowerShell 1.0 or later, is installed on computers that are running Windows Server 2003

Prepare the Migration Tools

Install feature on Windows Server 2012 R2Install-WindowsFeature Migration -ComputerName <TargetName>

Once Installed – Prepare the package for the 2003 servers.

Smigdeploy.exe /package /architecture Amd64 /OS WS03 /Path <TargetPath>

Copy the package to the local 2003 serversExecute SMigDeploy.exe from the 2003 servers

Done!

Promote a Windows Server 2012 R2 to DC status.

Migrate your DNS

Migrating DHCPMatch NIC number from source to target servers

Identify which scope are bound to which NICs

Export all settings from the source serverStop the DHCP server firstDe-authorize from Active Directory

Install DHCP service on target serverImport settings in the target server

Start serverAuthorize DHCP server

Retire old DHCP server

Environment Verify that the data locations for the destination server have sufficient free spaceOpen port UDP 7000 & TCP 7000 on destination serverUse the same drive letters for the destination server volumesDo not allow users to access the destination server until migration is fully completed

The DFS NamespacesJoin DFS Namespace and use the replication service to Migrate the dataOnce the replication is complete remove the 2003 server from the namespace

Other Shares and DataUse the Send-SmigServerData Receive-SmigServerData cmdlet from the migration tools and Migrate the shares and data.

Migrating File Shares & DFS

Verify that the new versions of the drivers are availableUse built in tools… don’t re-invent the wheel

Use Server Manager to Install Print Server and management tools on the Windows Server 2012 R2 machineUse the export\import capabilities in the tool.

Once Migrated retire 2003 serverRemove from the domainShutdown and turn off (forever!!! )In DNS add CNAME record to point your source server name to your target server name (you wont need to re-map printers!)
