McGregor, in New York. He was 63. Elected March 4th, 1869, he was 46. Reelected in 1872. He was in the Republican party. At the time, he was the youngest

president.

Early Life Ulysses’ dad was a tanner, and his mom

stayed at home. He had two brothers, and three sisters, and was the oldest kid. He went to a one room school house. He loved to do math. His dad wanted him to be a tanner, but Ulysses hated it.He went to West Point College, and was an average student. He didn’t like it there. People thought his name was Ulysses Simpson Grant, not Hirman Ulysses Grant; so he went by Ulysses S. Grant.

Family Life

Married to Julia Dent. They were engaged in 1844, and married on August 22nd, 1848.

Fredrick Dent was Ulysses’ friend in the war. When Ulysses met Julia, they both shared a love of horseback riding, reading, and poetry.

They had 4 children, Fredrick, Ulysses Jr., Ellen, and Jesse.

Life Accomplishments

Ulysses and his family traveled around the world. They went to Europe, Africa, The Middle East, India, and Asia. After the trip, they had no more money.

Ulysses didn’t want his family to suffer with no money after his death, so he wrote an auto-biography called Personal Memoirs. Mark Twain published the book.

Intersecting Facts Ulysses was friends with Mark Twain, who

published his Auto-biography. He traveled around the world after his

presidency. He has the biggest over-ground tomb in

North America. It’s located in New York City.

His real name is Hirman Ulysses Grant, but people at West Point thought it was Ulysses Simpson Grant.
