Henry Lawrence (Laurence) Serrurier and his wife Emily Caroline lived at 3 Hem(m)ing St., Kimberley when they died. However, they left behind them Lot 2 Block 51 in Fraserburg as part of their meagre estates. This had a book value of £800 having been bonded to a solicitor in Fraserburg, one Daniel Mills Dyason {DMD}, for two amounts: £400 and £375 respectively. He, in turn, had ceded the bonds to the Standard Bank as security against an overdraft. By 1928, Fraserburg had been subjected to several years of drought, with a subsequent downturn in the value of properties. The Master of the Supreme Court tried to have the executor of Emily Caroline Serrurier’s estate [her long-suffering son-in-law E T C Holmes {ETCH}] settle the estate. He declined because of the low property value. The bond holder {DMD} tried the same with the same result; and the Standard Bank was equally persistent of DMD. By December 1929, the outstanding debt on the Estate was £849/13/5, with the property having a current estimated value of £150. On 6 April 1931, DMD was sequestrated. He promptly had a heart attack and died on 25 April 1931. The property was sold by the Standard Bank at an auction on 4 January 1932 to one, Pieter Andries Stephanus le Roux for £150. The Henry Lawrence (Laurence) Serrurier and wife, Emily Caroline, estates were finalised on 25 March 1932, with death duties of £161 being waived by the state. All costs other than those of the bond had been carried by the offspring up until that time who felt a “moral responsibility to settle things”. In the General Directory of South Africa (1894-1895) HLS is listed as a butcher and general dealer. There remains a Serrurier Street in Fraserburg, mute testimony to his passage.

His wife's family, the Lamberts, are reputed to have lost title to their farm at Palmietfontein during the Second Anglo-Boer War. Certainly it is known that on 18 February 1901, there was heavy fighting between Boer forces and the Royal Irish Rifles (2nd Battalion) at Palmietfontein when on railway patrol from Natal Spruit. Late in his life, HSL fulfilled a long-held ambition to restore the farm to the family. This he did, but soon fell ill and died but months thereafter. Palmietfontein No.7, in the district of Germiston, has a particular place in history of motor sport in South African. Louis Herbert and Vera Serrurier hasd 4 sons and a daughter. He three eldest sons enrolled in the armed forces at the being of World War II, Allen Leslie Serrurier under the non de plume of Allen Leslie. The four Serrurier brothers, Jack, Louis, Allen, Henry and Robert, were enthralled with motorcycles and motorcycle racing. Louis Serrurier was the only one who, in addition, pursued motorcar racing. With the likes of Buddy Fuller, "the boys" laid down South Africa's first dirt track motorcycling speedway at "Old Barn" near Swartkoppes. This they later moved onto their father's farm as they wanted to develop a training circuit for motor racing enthusiasts. A 3.8 mile track made up of the runways of the Palmietfontein aerodrome near Johannesburg hosted the 1956 Rand Grand Prix, won by the Ferrari of Peter Whitehead.
