“Waging War By The Spirit”Galatians 5:16-25

1 The internal battle every follower of Jesus faces

2 The fact that we do not fight alone

Be on the lookout for...

3 How we should live in light of this reality

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and

Galatians 5:16

you will not gratify the desires ofthe flesh….

“…walk in a manner worthy of the Lord,

fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in

every good work and increasing in the

knowledge of God.”~ The Apostle Paul in Colossians 1:10

“…who walk not according to the

flesh but according to the Spirit.”

~ The Apostle Paul in Romans 8:4

The Self Viewed From One Perspective:

“The Flesh”

The Self Viewed From Another Perspective:

“New Creation”

My old self / former way of life My new self / new way of life

Sin living in me Christ living in me

Participates in this present evil age

Participates in the new age to come

Bows to serve sin as its master Bows to serve Christ as its master

Me living for myself Me living for Christ

The old person “in Adam” The new person “in Christ”

The fading outer person The renewed inner person

For the desires of the flesh are

Galatians 5:17

against the desires of the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit areagainst the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep youfrom doing the things you want todo…

These two forces are constantly fighting each other,

and your choices are never free from this conflict.

”~ New Living Translation

“[The Christian] is practically a self-contradiction. What takes place within the heart, mind, soul, and body of the believer is nothing less than a civil war, a violent

confrontation between two opposing forces, an irreconcilable antagonism.”

”~ Phillip Ryken, President

Wheaton College

But if you are led by the Spirit, you

Galatians 5:18

are not under the law….

“…just as Christ was raised from the dead by the

glory of the Father, we too might walk in

newness of life.” ~ The Apostle Paul in Romans 6:4

Now the works of the flesh are

Galatians 5:19-21

evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunken-ness, orgies, and things like these.

I warn you, as I warned you before,

Galatians 5:19-21

that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God….

But the fruit of the Spirit is love,

Galatians 5:22-23

joy, peace, patience, kindness, good-ness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there isno law….

And those who belong to Christ

Galatians 5:24

Jesus have crucified the flesh withwith its passions and desires….

~ The Apostle Paul in Romans 6:11

“Consider yourself dead to sin and

alive to God in Christ Jesus.”

If we live by the Spirit, let us also

Galatians 5:25

keep in step with the Spirit.

Keeping in step with the Spirit means waging war on our sin.

We don’t keep in step with the Sin that wars against us,

but we in step with the Spirit who wars for us.

Arm yourself with the Gospel

1

“Spiritual growth is not about moving on from where we began—the

gospel. It’s about growing deeper in

the gospel. Or rather, getting the gospel deeper into us.”

“The gospel does not command us to do anything

in order to obtain life, but bids us live by that which

another has done; and the knowledge of its life-giving

truth is not labour but rest—rest of soul—rest which is

the root of all true labour…; ~ Horatius Bonar 1808-1889

“…for in receiving Christ we do not work in order to rest, but we rest in order to work. In believing, we

cease to work for pardon, in order that we

may work from it…;

~ Horatius Bonar 1808-1889

“…and what incentive to work, as well as joy in

working, can be greater than an ascertained and realized forgiveness?”

~ Horatius Bonar 1808-1889

Intentionally side with the Spirit’s war.

2

“For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the

body, you will live.”~ The Apostle Paul

Romans 8:13

“Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love,

steadfastness, gentleness.”

~ The Apostle Paul in 1 Timothy 6:11

“So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith,

love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure

heart.”

~ The Apostle Paul in 2 Timothy 2:22
