EFC Sunday, July 6, 2014 God is!

This morning we start a 12-week seriesdealing with the foundations this church isbuilt on.The summary of todays lesson is just twoshort words; five letters in all: God is!As I wrote that tiny-yet-enormous statement

early in the week, I was hit by a powerfulimage. I went out into the flower beds andcaught an ant and put it on the screen of myiPad.It scurried around on the touch screencompletely oblivious to what he was in contactwith.That is how I feel trying to teach or explainGod is.As I have said many times, there cannot helpbut be obvious limitations when a three-and-a-

half-pound human brain tries to comprehendThe Only Living Eternal God.

That God is! statement is woven into the firstfour words of The Bible: In the beginningGod(Gen 1:1).Among many other things, that means thestory is first and most about Godand wefit intoHisstory.We are constantly tempted to flip thataroundand we often believe and/or live like

the story is first and most about usand Godneeds to fit intoourstory.

Again, the summary of todays lesson: God is!Butis He?If He is, what difference does He make?

2700 years ago, a man named Isaiah came tobelieve God is! with all his heart, soul andmind!Even God told Isaiah no one would like it

and eventually no one would listen (Is 6:10),he spentthree intense yearstelling peopleabout Himand even spent some of the time talking tothemnaked(Is 20:2-3)!He stated one core pointmanytimes (lets seeif you can catch it):I am the one and only God.Before me, there was no other god at all.And there will not be any god after me.I am the one and only LORD.(IS 43:10-11,

NIRV)

"La historia" es primeramente y ms sobrenosotros...yDiostiene que encajar ennuestra historia.

It is I who made the earthand created mankind on it.My own hands stretched out the heavens (Is45:12, NIV)there is no other god besides meI am God, and there is no other. (Is 45:21-22,NIRV)IamGod (Is 46:9, ESV)

Is He?If He is, what is He? Who is He?Does what you really believe about thatreally make any difference?Almost all of the people Isaiah spoke to didntthink so.They believed the story was first and mostaboutthemand if there was a God, He would just have tofit into their stories!Even the Israelites, the ones known as Gods

chosen people,no longer believed He wasThe Only Living Eternal God.They had reduced Him to just one small ggod among countless others.It is much the same today. As many people asever (if not more than ever) are perfectly fine ifsomeone talks about a God and faith inJesus as a way to Him. Conversationschange drastically if someone starts talkingabout the God and faith in Jesus as thewayto Him!

Satans first verbal challenge of the Godwas much deeper than what appears in ourmodern translations of The Bible. Thattypically has him pressing in on Eve (whileAdam stood there, uselessly), Did God reallysay?(Gen 3:1)A more thorough dissection of that shows therewas a deeper question implied. It has Satansneering a mocking one-word question:God??? as if to say, Cmon, youre notreally worried abouthim,are you? Pffft;he

should be worried aboutyou!

truths that should leave us shaking.It has always been hard to continue to beamazed by the statement God is,and by the fact that He has included us in Hisstory.It has always been hard to remain amazed thatfaith in what Jesus did makes it possible for usto come boldly to the throne of our graciousGod(Heb 4:16, NLT)Many (if not most) of us have a hard timethinking about goingsomeplacewe cant see

to talk tosomeonewe cant see either.I believe there is a bigger problem: ifstatements about God like Isaiahs are true,we really have to admitHe

is

God!Contrary to what Satan constantly tries to trickus into believing, we each have to admit:I am not God!Beyond that,

we cannotcontrol Godnorpredictwhat He doesand our pride andarrogance hates that!There are probably only three or four people inthe history of the world who would actuallysay they know more than Godbut I believefar more of usthink itfar more often than werealize or admit.I believe it can be subtly or blatantly seen inour prayers.Over the past few weeks there have been some

graphic examples of that. Think of some of theimages we have seen: the final minutes of asoccer gameand French soccer fan has her eyes closed andher hands clasped under her chinand another camera captures an Ecuadorian fanin the same position;both pleading for their own version of the samething.Or what about a game that comes down topenales (penalty kicks).

de engaarnos a creer, cada uno tiene que admitir:"Yo no soy Dios!"Ms all de eso,no podemoscontrolar a Diosnipredecir lo que hace ... y nuestro orgullo yarrogancia odia eso!Probablemente hay slo tres o cuatro personas en lahistoria del mundo que en realidaddiran que sabenms de Dios.... pero creo que mucho ms de nosotroslo pensamosmucho ms a menudo de lo que nosdamos cuenta o admitimos.

Yo creo que puede ser sutil o descaradamente vistoen nuestras oraciones.Durante las ltimas semanas se han producidoalgunos ejemplos grficos de eso. The images alternate back-and-forth: an entireteam on its knees for a goalieand anotherteam in the same position for a shooter.The Bible tells us God is omnipresent(everywhere, all the time) so He sees everygame.

He is omniscient (all-knowing), so thatincludes French and Spanish (and especiallyGreek!)so He knows what everyone isasking.He is also Father of all (Eph 4:6).What does He do when people onbothsidesare praying for victory?What about a Bible verse that states Godknows the end from the beginning? (Is46:10)Does that mean He knows who is going to win

next the World Cup next Sunday?What if one nation has 100-thousandpeoplepraying and the other has 100-million? Doesthat make any difference to The God whois!?What if, after he World Cup is over, the planecarrying the winning team home crashes?What if three players survive but are incritical condition?What if twoare what we would callbelievers and have family, friends and

complete strangers pleading with God for them and the thirdis an atheist and has nothingbut atheists around him? What if he gets out ofhis hospital bed, trades his robe for jeans,walks through the door and never looks back.What if the others stay in their hospital bedsfor months and actually never open their eyesagain.Not many people base their view of God on theoutcome of a soccer gamebut many basetheir view of God

on what happens in places like hospital rooms.It can be hard to not let what we think aboutGod be affected bywhat we think He isdoing(or isntdoing) --or how fast!From microwave meals to new pain medicineto newer iPhones, countless things teach us toexpect things quickly and faster all the time.As we continue to get spoiled by getting somany things sofast(and faster all the time),we continue to lose our ability (or at least our

desire) to endure to persevere to just hangin there.

Y si l se levanta de su cama del hospital, cambia subata por jeans, camina a travs de la puerta y nuncamira hacia atrs.Y si los otros se quedan en sus camas de hospitaldurante meses - y de hecho nunca abren los ojos denuevo.No muchas personas basan su perspectiva de Diossobre el resultado de un partido de ftbol... peromuchos basan su visin de Diosen lo que sucede en lugares como salas de hospital.Puede ser difcil no dejar que lo que pensamos acerca

de Dios se ve afectado porlo que pensamos que esthaciendo(onoesthaciendo) -o qu tan rpido!Desde comidas de microondas a nuevos medicamentopara el dolor a los nuevos iPhones, un sin nmero decosas nos ensean a esperar las cosas de formarpida- y ms rpido todo el tiempo.A medida que continuamos siendo mimados porconseguir tantas cosas tan rpido (y ms rpido todoel tiempo), seguimos perdiendo nuestra capacidad (o

But The Bible tells us a thousand years arelike a day to God (2 Pet 3:8) so we have toadmit we often dont know how Heunderstands quickly or soon!Not only that, The Bible includes statementslike, The LORDour God has secrets known to

no one.(Deut 29:29,NLT) Our innerkindergartener wants to stamp its feet andpout, But thats not fair!The reality is, God designed some things inways I dont think any of us would.He waited until Abraham was 75 yearsoldbefore telling him he would have a son and25 moreyears passed before that son wasborn!Moses training for ministry happened during40 straight yearsin the desert including

time in what the King James Bible calls thebackside of the desert (Gen 3:1)!25 yearspassed from the time David wasanointed King by Samuel to the time heactually sat on the throne in Jerusalem.And many people know God told Jeremiah totell the Israelites He knew the plans He had forthem (Jer 29:11). Many people dont know (orforget) that plan included 70 years in exile!25years of waiting; testing. 40years. 70.I think were probably all okay with

waitingbut we each have personal limits onhow long that should be.But waiting longer than you think you shouldhave to can really affect what you reallythink about Godor what you think God really thinks about you!On the one hand, we read statements aboutGod like the ones from Isaiah and we nod andsay Amen!on the other hand, what we think about Godcan be affected (sometimes deeply) by what

we think He is doingorhow quicklyHe seems to be doing it;or when we think He isnt doing things wethink He really should be.I dont know many people who dont oftenhave some version of the question: Why would(or why wouldnt) a good and all-powerfulGoddot-dot-dot (and they finish thequestion with a personal story; almost always ahardstory!)No one has ever made an appointment with me

in search of answers to questions about God --

por el contrario, lo que pensamos acerca de Diospuede verse afectado (a veces profundamente) por loque pensamos que est haciendo...o qu tan rpidoparece que lo est haciendo;o cuando pensamos que l no est haciendo las cosasque yo creo realmente debera hacer.Yo no conozco a mucha gente a menudo no suelentener alguna versin de la pregunta: Por qu (o porqu no) un Dios bueno y todopoderoso ... punto-punto-punto -(y terminan la pregunta con unahistoria personal;! casi siempre una historia dura)

The word for heard wasnt just like, Iheardthe phone ring? It was more like agood friend you havent heard from in yearscalls because she is a doing business in Iranand she gave her driver a Bible and it turned

out the driver also works for the police. Shegot stripped naked and beaten and thrown inthe worst jail there is in that country but oneguard took enough pity on her to give her onelong distance call. I am almost certain youwould say you heard herdifferently thanyou heard the phone ring in the first place.The kind of hearing you would give your oldfriend is the way the word was used here inExodus.I dont know where Moses put the

emphasisbut where I am lately, I put it onthefirstword: Godheard(Ex 2:24)God. Do you remember what we saw aboutHim? The one and only; no god before Him;will not be any god after him; the first and thelast; the one who made the earth and all that ison it; the one who stretched out the heavens;there is no other.He heardI dont know what would happen with what wecall our prayer life

if we kept asking The Holy Spirit to continueto magnify our understanding ofThe God who isas The God who hears us!Part of the problem is, we all know what it islike when were talking to someone and webelieve he or she isreally hearing us:eyecontact, body language, tone of voice; you canfeel empathy and sympathy.Sometimes it is really hard tofeelthat withGodand the way we feelaffects what we

believe.If we dontfeel likeGod ishearing us or ifwe dontfeel likeGod ishereit is tempting tobelieveHe isnteitherhereorhearing.It is like, If God reallycaresthen He mustnthear because He isnt doing anything!Or, If God reallyhearsthen He mustntcare because He isnt doing anything!David wrote Psalm 55 when people weresaying horrible lies about him led by a manwho used to be one of his best friends.

David used words like distraught, anguish,fear, trembling, all written in the present

El Dios que escomoEl Dios que nos escucha!Parte del problema es que todos sabemos lo que sesiente cuando estamos hablando con alguien ycreemos que l o ella realmente nos est oyendo: elcontacto visual, el lenguaje corporal, tono de voz;usted puede sentir empata y compasin.A veces es muy difcilsentir eso conDios... y laforma en que losentimos afecta lo que creemos.Si no nossentimos comosi Dios nos estescuchando- o si no nossentimos como que Dios

when he said, It is a privilegejust to be heardby God!ii He wasnot sayingit is a privilegewhen God does what we want or ask.Pastor Baucham said, God is holding up theuniverse by the power of His mightHe flungthe stars into place and sustains themand yetHe hears us!Is it enough just to be heard by The OnlyLiving Eternal God? If not,whynot?

David moaned and complained and that can

be okay if something is bugging, hurting oralmost crushing us. We can (and should)unload on God but it crosses a dangerous ifwe start subtly cursing Him or begin doubtingwhether He is real because something isnthappening we think should be or somethingishappening we thinkshouldnt be.We even get that messed up on ahumanlevel.I often hear people say, We dont (or didnt)have a voice in that. We arent beingheard.

In my experience, most of the timethey werebeing heard things just didnt go theirway!

The Israelites were groaning for relief but itwasnt coming and a belief began to grow that God wasntlisteningor He was listening was but didnt care.The way God heard(Ex 2:24) was writtensays He,

The Only Living Eternal God,waslistening andcared!I dont know what you are crying out thesedaysor what you cried out in the pastor what youll cry out sooner than you wouldprobably like,but that small phrase showsThe Only Living Eternal Godhearsandcares!

I want that to amaze me more all the time especially as I continue to learn to admit the

Even in the Old Testament the tendency is tosee Moses and the Israelites as the good guysand Pharaoh and the Egyptians as the badguys.God made it pretty clear He didnt choose theJews because they were the good guys. Hispoint in choosing them was to show His loveand grace! I am actually kind of amused whenanyone seems arrogant about being chosen byGod. It meant more like: To think deeplyaboutand in such a way that all youremotions get involved. It is kind of like thedifference between me saying, I remembermy wedding day: October 19, 1991,and methinking, Ohhhhh, I remember my weddingday and my wedding night!God rememberedHis covenant. Back in thetime of Genesis, He told Abraham it was aneverlastingcovenant and then God toldHim what it was: I will always be your God

Have you ever watched a potter working on aclump of clay?If that clay could talk, what would it say as thepotter starts to dig his fingers in; as she startsto squeeze and mold and even tear pieces ofclay off and toss them to the side?

The portion we just looked at says the Lordloves you.God shows his love for me by taking care ofmy sins.God, The Potter, unleashes The Holy Spirit totear chunks off, mold, shape, pinch, squeezeme to deal with mysinbecause He lovesme too much to leave me the way He foundme!God is doing that with billions of pieces ofclay all around the world. He has done the

same thing with billions more since he startedthe masterpiece of Creationand there is noway of knowing how many more He will workon, on the way to the New Creation!I intentionally mentioned billions ofpeoplebecause I believetogetherthey arecrucial to properly understand a piece ofScripture that is often used to explain God --and what He does (or allows).If youve been around churches much, youvelikely heard all things work together for

good(Rom 8:28, ESV)We often make that word all smaller or moreself-centered than it was intended to be as inall things that happen tome. All thingsliterally meant:all thingsnot just things thataffectme!Beyond that, the verb was written in thesingularform as in Godworks. Paulwasnt sayingall things work togetherbutGodis working all things, together,simultaneously!

Sometimes, things I would agree are gooddocome together for me but I dont believe thatis what the verse is saying in its fullness. Theword for good in there meant much morethan what would typically be consideredgood here and now! The way Paul used itgave it a sense of complete as in, how itwill be when human history ends and allthings are seen and known by those who willbe with God in the next stage of eternity. Thatis what God is workingall thingstogether for!

I want to go a little farther with an illustrationIve used before. Imagine a plain cardboard

of us know what the picture is?Only the person who designed the puzzle in thefirst place could know!There are over seven billion people on theplanet. If we consider the phrase all things,how many puzzle pieces would there be forGod to be working together right now? Thatis getting into the ant-on-the-iPad kind ofstuff I cannot comprehend!

There is an influential (and growing) belief

that says God does not know precisely whereeachpiece goes and there are pieces that getturned over that catch Him by surprise. It isone way to try to explain evil or badthings.It says God does not know every piece of thefuture but because He is God, Hereactsperfectly when bad things happen.It says God is not be responsible for evil orbad if He didnt know it was coming.I understand the tension. If God knows there is

something bad coming but doesnt stop it,how could He be called loving?We need to be very careful that we dont try tounderstand or explain one reality about God byshrinking another realitylike trying toexplain His infinite love by downplaying howoften The Bible talks about His wrath andjudgment.I have explored The Bible and its languages asdeeply as I am able and what I findare pictures of God knowing everything and

everythingincludes everything about thefuturefrom the very next second and on intoeternity.If that is not true, I dont see how I could haveconfidence God isworking all things togetherin His eternally perfect way.Along with that, the thought that He doesntknow all of the future minimizes His repeatedcomforting promise of I will be with you.I dont find it particularly comforting to thinkabout sensing Gods presence with me in a

doctors waiting room and Im wondering ifHe is nervously biting His fingernails and
